Wakaba was lucky to have won against isabeau; she even said so in the press conference: that 70% of her win was luck. Wakaba was lucky that the tech caller was so strict on isabeau. But isabeau still won in pcs; you know that if isabeau hadn't fallen (lucky for wakaba) isabeau would've walked away with 70+ in pcs and a gold medal. When was the last time Wakaba was gifted over 65 points in pcs? Even with her speed and power, the judges do not like her. I feel sorry for wakababy.
If that tickles your fancy to pity the winner in advance, be my guest. I will see how the season unfolds for any evidence that Higuchi is somehow will-be-robbed in a slim-pickings field. Lol. I guess wazrobbed is not enough for some people. Anything to sing blues. If Higuchi doesn't have 70 in PCS, she doesn’t. It doesn't help that her team has no idea how to package her to her advantage. They keep trying to pigeon-hole her to the conventional FS mold and she is not. She doesn't have the extensions, the long lines and flexible, elongated waste. They need to find programs and costuming that will show the world an image that suits her strong, squat athletic build, not trad princess choices. Thank God they didn’t shove tiara on her head this time...only without the 3A.

To win, a skater had to be unique, emphasizing their strength, but for some reason, Japanese just keep producing their women on the same line except Sakamoto. For some reason, they got it in men, but women...nope.

When it is actually Levito who is in a really problematic position now, with the bronze, while Japan is setting up to monopolize the GP in women.

I agree that the princess-y angle just doesn't work for Wakaba. I want something along the lines of the lion king program for her. Even a tango (yeah, I know, old hat) would suit her powerful skating better than the lyrical stuff. The second part of the FS was great, but the costume was bad and didn't even fit the program. Can't we give her some proper rock music or maybe an epic movie soundtrack (no mopey ballads though)?

I’ve always been more of a fan of the power skaters when it comes to the women, but more of a fan of the lyrical skaters when it comes to the men. In typical gay male fashion, we love our men pretty and our women as warriors. :love2:

I agree, but Lion King was terrible for her imo because it dipped into the same Disney Princesses pool as everyone. She/her team needs to innovate and stop looking like Gleikhenghouse is secretly picking their music. She needs to bury the quarterback-in-a-tutu look for good.

Basically, she needs to become the second Japanese woman to find bright individuality the way Sakamoto did, because the rest of that generic lot is better than her at being generic with softer knees and good glide in terms of presentation. She has a great body for athletic skating, she needs to skate athletic and own it.

And, another thing. I guess Japanese internal system oppresses the women there into being self-effacing and grateful for anything, but to be a champion, she needs to come out into the rink as a champion/first lady before she even competes. It doesn't mean she needs to be bold as brass. She just needs to own it. Stake a claim, no matter what place she will get in the end. There, she could take lessons from Levito who had that quality since she was fifteen.

Or she needs teach so overwhelmingly better than others, that the judges would overlook the lack of length in her limbs and flexibility--in her waistline.

She lacks the diva quality of Tutktamysheva or Sakamoto, she doesn't have the 'I can beat all your women and all your men' of Trusova, and she doesn't have the extraordinary tech or glide. Just really good ones. That's good enough, but that's not a champion.

I don't see why we can't have power and lyricism in the one skater sometimes plus some real artistry and hey, why not a decent helping of charisma as well. Not that I'm greedy... I'm not a big fan of many of the current seniors in either discipline, and only even a mild fan of a very few at SKAM so I don't have a stake as such, I really don't mind who wins the GPs (contrast with the juniors where there's at least five I desperately want on the JGPF and Worlds podiums. Gonna be wonderful for me when they all mature.)

If I had to choose give me skating skills and lyricism over a 'okay jumpjumpefficientjump what's next?' If I want that, we got kangaroos here (and yes, this is a :slink: topic right now, I know). But I do think we should be also able to have skaters both male and female who can give a power aura even without the quads and 3A, and I agree some of the women are shoehorned into styles that don't suit them (some of the men too, we have seen some fairly butch blokes over the years who clearly yearned to be romantic hero types and I cannot make head or tale of who Malinin and several others right now think they are) because of cultural preferences which, let me remind us all, may be their own as well.

Too bad about the fall for Isabeau. She would have won without it. They were really strict with her in TES. It was 10 points lower than at Nebelhorn Trophy. Still, it was a beautiful skate. I love both programs for her!
