Hello! I’m an adult female, 5’2”, 135 pounds, 38 years old. Reasonably healthy (as in, no significant health issues except chronic back pain after my two pregnancies) but not athletic and never participated in sports before.

My kids were interested in ice skating so I took Learn To Skate Adult 1 to skate with them a bit and absolutely fell in love with it!! It was so hard but also one of the most fun things I had ever done. I took Adult 1 in April, finished in June, and then switched to a private coach. Since June, I’ve been skating 6-7 times a week, 30 minutes each time. If I skate longer than that, my feet (arches) and back hurt and I can feel myself tiring and making more mistakes.

My biggest goal is to do the adult pre-bronze skating skills test someday. Maybe even bronze but I’m a little embarrassed to say that because I cannot even one foot glide. I am not really interested in free skates or competitions, just want to learn skating skills and good technique. So I really, really hope to do at least one adult test.

Even though I practice everyday, my progress is super slow. I can swizzle, backward swizzle, snow plow stop on one side (only one side), stroke to a two foot glide, but cannot do a proper stroke gliding on one foot. And I can’t for the life of me one foot glide despite trying everyday for weeks, and I’m not using my edges correctly for half pump, can’t really do a two foot turn while moving, etc. My coach says she thinks I take direction really well and can definitely do the pre bronze test within two years and she seems happy with my progress but I don’t know if she’s just really nice.

My concern now is my boots feel a little big. I had them professionally fitted and heat molded, the fitter recommended Jackson Evos. Could you please kindly look at this insole and tell me if you think this is a problem? Is it too long?

When I lace very tightly my arches hurt a lot within two minutes of skating. But when I lace them firmly but not too tight, I feel like my feet move a tiny bit each time I take a step.

Mostly I’m trying to figure out if: (1) my goals are unrealistic, maybe I shouldn’t be hoping to take a test someday and should just try to skate around the rink recreationally - after all, I am old and have no athletic experience; (2) if my skates are making it hard for me to progress; or (3) if I just need more practice and it’s neither of the above. Thank you so much in advance! I really do appreciate the people on this forum, being willing to give your time and expertise to strangers. It’s extremely kind and I appreciate being able to learn so much from reading all the posts here.

Hi and welcome! Your problem is your boots. You should have never been put in an Evo. Those are rated 25 and are for girls who don't weigh much, definitely not for an adult woman. You don't have stiff enough boots. Did you go to an actual pro fitter or the pro shop at the rink? If it's the latter that's not a good thing. There are only a few actual pro fitters that are figure skating based in a pro shop in a rink.

What is your foot type so I and others here can make proper suggestions and where are you in this world so a suggestion of a proper fitter can be made as well?

Thank you so much, Ic3Rabbit!! You are amazing and I really appreciate your expertise!

I was worried about the size but stiffness never even occurred to me. My fitter was a figure skating fitter recommended by my rink (he doesn’t fit hockey skates and doesn’t work at the rink shop but has an independent store) but also during the fitting he didn’t seem to take into account foot shape or width as far as I could tell. He seemed to decide on the Evo and when he saw me and learned I was a beginner even before measuring my feet.

Based on the chart I think my foot type is African. Also I feel like it’s on the wider side of normal. For street shoes I don’t wear Wide, but I definitely cannot wear Narrow and avoid shoes that are on the narrower side.

I live in Honolulu Hawaii but travel to Seattle and Portland every few months so if there’s someone you can recommend there that would work for me.

Thank you so much!

Those skates even though have a rating for lighter people. And stiffness not supporting you properly are valid BUT.. if you are a beginner and you’re not doing more than single jumps.. or big flying spins.. it’s not a huge deal right now. If you ever get to the stage of doing double jumps etc I’d upgrade to a more professional pair.

Actually, it is a big deal right now b/c they need the proper stiffness and no one here is suggesting boots stiff enough for doubles. Being supported at a certain weight needs a particular stiffness no matter what the skater is doing or they risk injury and bad unsupported technique and won't ever get to jumps.

Yes but she says 135 lbs. that’s not heavy.
