Ashley Elizabeth CAIN is a Ladies Singles skater who represents the USA. She was born on 22[SUP]nd[/SUP] July 1995 in Carrollton, Texas, USA.

She is the 2014 Ondrej Nepela Memorial Senior Ladies Silver Medallist and the 2012 American Championships Junior Ladies Silver Medallist.

Ashley is the daughter of Australian Pairs skater Peter Cain and Canadian Ice Dancer Darlene Wendt.

This is going to be a slightly different Fan Fest. It was originally intended to be a Fan Fest for Ashley’s Singles skating career. However, she was also competing simultaneously in Pairs Skating. So, I felt that this aspect of her skating career should also come into the Fan Fest.

Consequently, rather than having just one “Original Post”, this Fan Fest has two!

The first post (this one) is for Ashley as a Singles skater.
The second post is for Ashley’s Pairs partnerships.

Please note that there is also a separate thread for Ashley’s partnership with Timothy LeDuc:

The Personal Best and Season Best scores that the ISU uses for a skater only take into consideration certain competitions. For example, they do not take into consideration domestic competitions, such as Sectional, Regional or National Championships.

The table below takes into consideration all the events that the skater has taken part in. These scores are referred to as “Absolute Personal Best” and “Absolute Season’s Best” so as to distinguish them from the scores recorded by the ISU.

Where have USFS been hiding this girl???!!!

Oh, yeah – in Pairs!

As you may have gathered, it is taking me some time to be convinced that Gracie Gold is the future of American Ladies skating.

But with Ashley Cain, I was convinced straight away after seeing her SP at the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy. And her FS just cemented my opinion.

Of course, we are all talking about Radionova, because she won the Gold in her first senior international. And that is a magnificent achievement that should be talked about. But, we have known how good Radionova is for a few years now. Ashley Cain, on the other hand, just came out of the blue. Well, for us outside America, anyway! ;)

But to win Bronze in your first senior international event as a Singles skater, and to only be beaten by well-known names like Elena Radionova and Miki Ando, is some achievement as well.

And this was no fluke - Cain was 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] in the SP (behind Radionova and Ando), and 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] in the FS (behind only Radionova; Ando was 4[SUP]th[/SUP]). :points:

Ashley Cain is just so beautiful to watch on the ice. You would not think that she has only just come back from Pairs and, hence, is less experienced in Singles skating than her peers.

I really can see her having a big future within Team USA. OK, so if we assume that Wagner and Gold are 2 of the girls going to Sochi, then I can't see Cain getting the third slot. There's just too many candidates – Czisny, Nagasu, Zhang, Cesario, Gao, Zawadski...

But if Wagner, Czisny and one or two of the other skaters retire after Sochi, then Cain has a good shot for Pjeongchang. She already has a good foundation on which to build over the next 4 years.

In summary, I think Ashley Cain deserves a thread in the Fan Fest forum. Because I have a feeling we will be talking a lot about her over the next few years...!!! ;)

Ashley was outstanding in her LP at Liberty this summer, which I suppose is how she earned this berth to Nebelhorn.

Pity about the fall, but everything else was faultless. I suppose it was a risk sending her to the Nebelhorn, but I can totally understand the Federation's decision. This performance was undoubtedly the swaying point.

After seeing 2 different performances of this FS, I am more convinced than ever!

She was also exquisite in pairs. Here she is with Joshua Reagan in 2012, skating to the Dr. Zhivago soundtrack:

Although I hadn't seen this particular performance before, I remember seeing this routine in GP's that year. I remember Joshua's costume!!! ;)

Ashley and Joshua were a good partnership, and they skated beautifully together, but I think she is even more of a diamond on her own.

Any word on how Joshua is getting on since the split with Ashley?

Thank you for the videos!

Joshua teamed up with Caitlin Yankowskas, but had injuries so they could not do the GP last year. In April this year, he and Becky Bereswill teamed up.

Thanks Doris.

I did look at Josh's Wikipedia page, but I've got to the stage that I'm wary of what Wikipedia says.

You see, a couple of weeks ago, I went onto Kristina Zaseeva's Wikipedia, and I noticed a lot of details that were plain wrong. Well, they were wrong for Kristina, anyway - they were actually Polina Korobeynikova's details!

So, now I prefer to hear stuff from somewhere else as well just to confirm that Wikipedia is right.

Mind you, getting back to Ashley Cain, and I found out some interesting stuff about her on her Wikipedia article. Namely, her parentage. I didn't realise that she was a skating child (Mum was an ice dancer; Dad was a pairs skater), or that neither parent is American (Mum is Canadian; Dad is Australian).

Given how positive everything is looking for Australian figure skating at the moment, I wonder will the Aussie federation be making enquiries about Ashley's future plans...

My immediate thoughts were the same. She is obviously extremely talented, but the math gets complicated. The odds of being on a championship team for the US are so very tough. Just thinking about how much satisfaction she could achieve, especially under the CoP system, by simply having the opportunities and exposure to Championship events that she would have if representing Australia - make it a no brainer in my opinion.

First would come ISU points through visibility at Senior B events in lovely locations. Then would come invitations to Grand Prix events. Then would come 4CC every year. Then would come Worlds. Then could come the Olympics.

The magnitude of uncertainties if she stays on track with the US are considerable. Would love to see her out there competing - not struggling through summer events, haggling for B's, then finding her season done by the middle of January.

As I have said in other threads, my humble opinion is that I absolutely hate what I could call "busybody" talk of why this or that skater "should" change her or his citizenship -- when the skater has given not the slightest indication of wanting to do so.

Regarding Ashley Cain:
One aspect of her training is available only to American skaters. I'm talking about the University of Delaware's cutting-edge (no pun intended) motion-capture/simulation technology for jump training (which has been discussed in at least one previous thread).
US Figure Skating is a sponsor of the researchers who are the brains of the technology, and USFS does not allow use of the technology for skaters from other countries.

Cain was featured in an article about the technology in Skating magazine's August/September Issue. The entire issue is available online:
See pp. 20-21. The title of the article: Jumpin' Ahead. Subtitle: ISP Athletes Using 3D Simulation System To Master Triples, Quads.
Quote from Cain:
"Even now, when I have a bad day on the ice, my dad tells me to remember Delaware and how to get my arms and leg in tight. That usually does the trick. I also remember Dr. Richards telling me to come back when I want to learn a triple Axel."

Agree with your wariness of Wikipedia. :agree:
And agree that getting confirmation elsewhere always is a good idea.

I too am wary of Wikipedia, but I find myself using it more, and then looking for corroboration elsewhere.

Congrats to Ashley Cain for winning the Broadmoor Open with a score of 176.76, including with an awesome SP score of 67.41 (39.05/28.36).

She's making a good case for that SA TBD spot. :)

Also here's a super cute photo montage of her and Jason Brown: http://instagram.com/p/p4I_wwTXLH/

As I've said in other threads, I really like that SP: athletic and not princessy. I really hate the costume.

And I live near Philadelphia, my brother lives 10 miles from the Iceworks rink, and I will be out of town for work that week. Just when I thought I might go to my first competition in 20 years...

Happy 19th birthday, Ashley! :hb2:

She's already got quite a few early birthday presents, yes?

Ashley Cain in Ice Network article by Lynn Rutherford about the Philadelphia Summer Classic (http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2014/07/21/85572800)

Interesting part:

It's too late, pairs boys: Ashley Cain is off the market.
With the post-Olympics pairs partner trade in high gear this spring, the 2011 U.S. junior pairs champion (with Joshua Reagan) fended off a flurry of tryout invitations from U.S. and Canadian men. But these days, triple loop combinations -- not triple throws -- are the Texas skater's single-minded focus.
"It was really hard to turn them down, the opportunities are so great," said Cain, who turns 19 on Tuesday. "I knew all the good things that would come with pairs, but I'm fully committed to my plan."
"I'm focusing on making the Olympic team in 2018," she continued. "This season is the beginning of my path, and with getting two Grand Prix [assignments], I'm starting out strong. My plan is to improve each competition, each season."

I like that Ashley is taking ownership of her singles career.
