Broken/sprained toe from boot pressure?

Hi skaters,

I recently injured my pinky toe and I don't remember how. I think it was broken, it was swollen and purple, but I was out of the country so I waited 3 weeks to return home and see a doctor. I noticed over the years after skating that my left pinkie toe was red and the toe nail had turned white at some point. I didn't think much of it because it didn't hurt.

I asked my doctor if it could be caused by pressure from my skate boots and he said it's unlikely, but on the second visit he changed his mind. Has anyone had a similar experience? Can the boot pressure really cause serious damage over time?

Thanks for reading!

If your boot is ill fitted in the toebox yes it's possible, or if the toebox is starting to collapse downward or push inward from the sides due to your boots breaking down. It could also happen from trauma from it hitting the ice in the toe if you fall out of a jump etc. Usually though, there's nothing that can be done for a broken pinkie toe, usually it's just taped to the next toe over to heal. I would not be skating or dancing or running etc on it though, as it will just hinder healing and possibly cause worse trauma to it.
