OK, Southern hemisphere, you had your chance...now its us northerner's turn. Look west at sunset. Comet will be too close to sun to see well on the 11th... the 15th-20th should be spectacular. Bring binocs if you want but you wont need them. Get somewhere where you have a clear western view. Once the sun drops below the horizon and the sky begins to darken....boom!

Darn, my balconies face north and east. I'll have to go out into the condo complex's gardens and hope it doesn't rain.

What's rain? The good news is this one is hanging around for awhile as you can see...as it drifts up it will get dimmer each night. I live in a dark sky area so I can see the Milky way...Some comets are very faint and must be spotted with binocs or my scope and they look like fuze balls....This one should be good but its best to have a clear view of the horizon to the west, Could be the brightest in 100 years.....but comets are hard to predict. BTW Canadians aree probably tired of seeing The Aurora but tomorrow night could be big. look at SOFTSERVENEWS DOT COM AND IF THE KP NUMBER IS ABOVE 6, GO LOOK.....

BTW, if you use the free sky view app, , this will make things a bit easier to find the comet but if predictions are true, you wont need it.

Rain: what gives us such pretty trees and flowers in Vancouver .

Living in the heart of a city makes it hard to see stuff in the sky, but we try. And I've lived in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, but have never seen the Northern Lights or any kind of Aurora in my life. My father's earliest childhood memory was of being woken up by his father and carried outside on a winter night to see the Northern Lights in Scotland, but that was further north and very few street lights even in a city like Aberdeen c1910.

If no clouds, Check out tonight if you can get out of the city with a view to the north . I saw them from the Vancouver cruise dock. Your phone will see them better than you can. Go to softservenews dot com and get the current kp factor. 6 and above is a storm. Overhead views of the lights are very rare down here in Spokane.....but we saw them the other night.

We got some good ones early....KP factor 8 in Spokane...went down but now on the way up....gonna try and wait for the moon to set.
It was quite cloudy here so we had to drive around... I don't have a great camera on my phone but we could see the colours dancing just with our eyes... It was amazing...
