According to the newly released ISU communication no. 2657, qualification for ISU Championships will now be changed to total combined TES

e) Combined Total Elements Scores Skaters/couples participating in the following Figure Skating Championships must have reached the Following Combined Total Elements Scores (SP/RD + FS/FD) during the ongoing season (2024/25) or the immediately preceding season (2023/24):

ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2025

TES MEN 104.00
WOMEN 90.00
PAIR SKATING 88.00
ICE DANCE 94.00

ISU European, ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2025:C

TES

MEN 86.00
WOMEN 75.00
PAIR SKATING 75.00
ICE DANCE 85.00

ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2025

TES

JUNIOR MEN 80.00
JUNIOR WOMEN 72.00
JUNIOR PAIR SKATING 63.00
JUNIOR ICE DANCE 71.00

The Combined Total Elements Score (not including Component Scores) is calculated by adding the Skaters/Couples highest Technical Elements Score in Short Program / Rhythm Dance and the FreeSkating / Free Dance and must have been reached in an ISU recognized International Competition (as per Article 39, paragraph 7 of the ISU Constitution and Rule 107, paragraphs 1 to 10 of the ISUGeneral Regulations) during the ongoing or preceding season (See ISU Special Regulations Single &Pair Skating Ice Dance, Rule 378, paragraph 4). The Skaters/Couples highest Technical ElementsScore in Short Program / Rhythm Dance and the Free Skating / Free Dance to calculate the CombinedTechnical Elements Score may be reached at different competitions.

Compared to the old minimums, for WC for instance in women and men they have increased the TES with 5 points in total.

Those who earlier barely had the minimums in both the SP and FS/FD will need to increase their scores and chase for the new minimums. A few skaters will benefit from it because they had a huge margin in the FS/FD but just barely missed the SP.

How do you feel about this change?

Some thoughts, I feel unsure how a feel about this. I have not done the math, but for women if you don´t have a stable triple lutz or flip I think it will be almost impossible to reach the minimums for Worlds now. At the same time, it´s good for skaters who had really strong FS/FD but struggled with the SP that they can benefit from it.

I would like to see how many will be affected by this change. I think there will be a lot.

Just quick did some look into some skaters, and already discovered that two favorites who had the minimums in the end of this season will need to get them again :(

Josefin Taljegård who really struggled with reaching her SP minimums the last couple of season, and who finally did it early in the last season would need to get them again for Worlds.

SP TES 32,77 (old minimums 32.00) and TES 54.14 in the FS (old minimums 53.00). She will now have a total TES of 86,91 and she will need 90 in total. I don´t think it´s possible for her to get a better SP TES since that was her struggle before, so she would need to get 57-58 in TES in the FS in one competition to get the new minimums. With her content she will probably need to have a clean skate!

Milla Ruud Reitan / Nikolaj Majorov will also need to get the minimums again, they had them with the old rule but their total TES now will be 89,39 and they will need 94.

One skater that will benefit from the new change is Mia Risa Gomez, she had the minimums for Worlds this season, but since she got them from 22/23 season she needed to get them again for next season. Her best SP TES was just a bit short from last season, TES 31.85 at Worlds. However, her best TES from FS last season was at Nordics with 62.08, so her total TES will 93.03 and she will be safe within the 90 in total.

They can be from different competitions and they will calculate the best TES from the SP and FS/FD and add up the best total score. Basically like before when SP and FS TES could be reached at different competitions. If they would have to get them in the same competition I think it would be become almost impossible for many skaters to achieve the new minimums and we would probably have less then 24 skaters at Worlds, so no need for qualifying for the FS..

Surprisingly enough, while a lot of teams are losing their minimums, Worlds wouldn't be going down by as much as I feared.

Going through the list:
SCHALLER Sophia / MAYR Livio (AUT) - missing 0.21 points
SIMIOLI Federica / ZARBO Alessandro (CZE) - Were losing their minimums under the old rule
ROSCHER Letizia / SCHUSTER Luis (GER) - Were losing SP minimum under the old rule
GAMEZ Isabella / KOROVIN Aleksandr (PHI) - Were losing SP minimum under the old rule
CRAFOORD Greta / CRAFOORD John (SWE) - Missing 2.43 points

I excluded teams representing countries that had enough other teams to fill all spots at next year's Worlds, which is why Roscher/Schuster are included (Germany has 3 spots, but only two teams with minimums) but Piegad/Strekalin are not (France has one spot and one other team with minimums).
Currently, I am counting 20 potential entries (taking into account entry restrictions by country).

In Juniors, the situation is kind of similar:
SINCLAIR SCOTTI Claudia / QUESADA Noah (ESP) - missing 3.62
ROTHENBUEHLER Nora Marleen / BEREI Mozes Jozsef (HUN) - missing 0.65
POLMAN Polina / RENOLDI Gabriel (ITA) - missing 2.21 points

Currently, we'd be down to 16 potential entries (ignoring teams potentially being injured and not competing this season), taking into account splits and entry restrictions by country), but a few teams are close to the cutoff and there will be new teams competing this season.

That change of TES requirement for the upcoming season is liken to a double edged sword to everyone in all 4 disciplines.

I know that there are skaters who I follow their progress might lose it in the upcoming 2024-2025 season especially with Rakhat Bralin and Dias Jirenbayev yet these two can get them back once the former get consistent with the Tech content such as the 3A and 4S at his training base in Italy while the latter needs to be confident with the 3A in both SP&FS.

Tough luck to those certain guys who don't have needed tech at least a 3A for the long time eventually lose either their SP or FS mins. 😜

I did some number punching to see how the changes have affected the women regarding TES for Worlds, I decided to include the ladies who competed at Worlds this year, but who don´t have the minimum anymore regardless of the rule change and who needs to chase them anyway.

Of those who competed at Worlds only Josefin Taljegård doesn´t have the minimum anymore who had it under the old rules. Meda and Mia who competed at Worlds got their minimums back after the rules changes, both would have needed to improve the SP TES under old rules.

Those who didn´t compete at Worlds, but now has gotten the minimums after the change but didn´t have them under the old rules are: Elizabeth Gervits, Kristen Spours and Sara-Maude Dupuis.

Of those who didn´t compete at Worlds and lost the minimums after the new rules: Eva-Lotta Kiibus, Kristina Lisovskaja, Janna Jyrkinen, Mana Kawabe, Mai Mihara and Lindsay Van Zundert.

In total 7 have lost the minimums because of the rule change, and 5 have gotten them due to the change. Looking at those who lost the minimums, pretty much all of them are able and will most likely be able to get them eventually this season, so in total I think actually the rule change for women will actually end up with more skaters having the minimims?!

The change doesn´t affect the total of countries represented at Worlds much as for now, thankfully. Estonia only have one spot next season and Petrokina has the minimums. All though Povey lost the minimums, Kristen Spours got them, so there is one skater from GBR. The country that is most affected by the rule change is Sweden and Josefin Taljegård, no one else has it and if she doesn´t get it Olympic spot for Sweden will be much more difficult to get.

Germany has no skater with minimums now but Isaev would have to improve the TES regardless of the change, same for Brezinova and Gracheva.

When I have time, I might look into men and Ice Dance as well, might also do one for EC/4CC.

ISU has already updated the total element score, found here. So to find out all the skaters who have the minimum (above 90), just check the link.

These three are interesting looking at their jump content since their best SP TES did not have a 3-3 jump combo. So it seems to be more forgiving to the women without a 3-3 but who could still get the old FS minimums by 4-6 points. It'll be interesting to see how this works out during the season.

I am very biased in this case since Sara-Maude is one of my favourites. I'm happy that she is going into the season with the minimums and Canada can have an alternate for Worlds now.

I like it that they don't have to hunt for TES separately for SP and FS, because it is really quite common for someone to skate one program really well and another--not so much. I think it will help overall and it is easier to dial up or down the combined TES than two separate ones.

I agree, especially since in women so many of them were hunting that short program TES that was basically impossible to attain without 3-3.

While I agree 3-3 are standard, many struggle with 3T or 3L and in the free they can use eu combos

I wanted to take a look at the Junior Men since I noticed at least two Canadian Junior Men had lost their minimums with the change. Their CTES can be found here, and it includes skaters who have now aged out of Juniors. They're included out of interest, so the change may not affect them.

There are 191 skaters on the list. Of them:

- 87 do not have the CTES and would not have the minimums under the old rules
- 77 have the CTES and would have kept the minimums under the old rules

3 skaters gained the minimums under CTES and would not have the minimums under the old rules:

Taiga NISHINOJPN85.2422.8662.38
Antonio MONACOUSA82.3924.1458.25

They were all missing the SP under the old rules, but had high enough TES in the FS to compensate.

24 skaters would have had the minimums under the old rules, but lost them under CTES:

Some of them are very close, and could get it depending on what jump content they're adding. They're growing young men, so I expect that they'll be adding content. They may have Senior minimums to aim for if they're no longer eligible in some cases.

I looked at the Junior Women for the minimums since the Junior Men were interesting. CTES is located here. The list includes skaters who have aged out, so the numbers are included out of interest.

There are 600 Junior Women on the list. Of them:

- 462 skaters did not have the CTES minimum, and would not have it under the old TES minimums
- 110 skaters have the CTES minimum and would have kept it under the old TES minimums

6 Junior Women gained the CTES when they would not have met the old TES requirements:

Mia Risa Gomez kept both the Senior and Junior Worlds minimums with the change.

22 Junior Women did not meet the CTES minimum, but would have kept the old TES requirements:
