I'm really clumsy so upping my training ante would be an invitation for disaster for me. I don't necessarily work harder before a comp, but I do work smarter. I'll do more runthroughs in the last two weeks, sometimes as many as three a session (which is a lot for poor old me!). I am a little superstitious; I never skate on the Thursday or Friday before. Both times I've done that I've been injured, so...nope.
