Do you think something like this could be choreographed?

I have been thinking a lot about combining more experimental contemporary music and figure skating, and I've definitely seen some programs where I could imagine the skaters really getting deeper into movement exploration. I looked into contemporary skating and it is really cool but it seems the music is not so far removed, from other skating just the movement is different - and of course this is extremely interesting!

Could something like this be choreographed on ice? Especially given the longer duration?

(For a reference of movement with a similar music but with dancers):

Is that really considered experimental? I can imagine that being choreographed on ice extremely easily.

I don't know what you mean by longer duration... Do you mean for an ice show with a synchronized skating team or something? The whole piece?

For a program you would cut it shorter. It doesn't seem unique or experimental to me. It would fit any higher level balletic and musically sympathetic skater who prefers lyrical works.

By the way I think it would be absolutely beautiful. Its true that this sort of music is rarely skated to, but I just mean the choreographic essence sounds very balletic in a pretty standard manner. I think it is absolutely fitting for a skating program, which would likely distinguish itself in its sophisticated temperament, but again I just don't see it as experimental or requiring a unique style of choreography.

I would be very interested to see someone pick this though, its a very nice suggestion.

Thank you for your kind words!
I actually am not super familiar with programs that last longer than 3-4 minutes, even in shows I have seen longer numbers are rare. Although I guess sometimes there are multiple performers that come in and out of a performance, and something like that could work well here. (or as you said, an excerpt of the music could be used).

And yes, sorry, experimental isn't the right word but its not exactly commercial classical music, it was performed at a concert focused on the singer's doctoral research.

I listened to bits and pieces of it and it's beautiful. I just think it's kind of slow for figure skating. JMO

I know this composer. I didn't expect to find her when I clicked on the link.
It's a beautiful piece. It certainly can be done, but of course, very few skaters could pull it off. I am thinking it needs perfect glide, line and power to convey the very long sustained notes. But definitely, I believe almost all music can be translated to the ice.

BTW On her website, (i won't share the link because I wouldn't want this to look as it is advertizing) Alyssa Aska offers music editing for figure skaters... :)

My first impression is that it would take super-human body contol to do something like this. Maybe John Curry.

I think you are right, but I still think it would be really, really cool and an interesting challenge. I saw a video from an ice show this summer where Stephané Lambiel did The Whale, and in the opening he held a spiral for a really, really long time against this really slow, sparse music, and I think someone could use something like that - I would also imagine you could work against the slow nature of the music and do something really fast. I think there is a lot of room for experiment in those kinds of directions, especially in shows and artistic presentations.

I agree. Several skaters have used this approach, even in competitive programs, in skating to Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel -- another composition that features a progression of long whole notes.

PS -- I like your username. :)

thank you!

for sure, I actually loved especially Shoma's interpretation of Spiegel im Spiegel and i thought it was massively underrated.

I know what you mean, and that is why I was curious - I mean i am not a choreographer, but I really think there are some cool things that could be done with extremely slow and drawn-out music in the context of shows. I couldn't imagine something like that for competition, unless it was a portion used as the opening or for a slow-down in the middle to change up the pace.

I would be curious which skaters you think could pull something like this off! I agree that it would require extreme control. That's kind of what interests me the most, is the challenge of setting something like this.

i think Jeremy Abbott is one of them.

I also think in ice dance, weaver and poje may have been able to do something like that.

you are absolutely right! I checked out some programs from them and I could see it.
(also wow, I didn't follow figure skating until recently and I can't believe that men's singles was super artistic some years ago!)
