Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik

Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik, who teamed up in May 2022, are an emerging U.S. ice dance team gaining momentum on the national and international stage. Together, they are the 2026 Four Continents champions, two-time Grand Prix medalists, five-time Challenger Series medalists, the 2026 U.S. National silver medalists, and the 2023, 2025 U.S. national pewter medalists.

Kolesnik, a 2020 World Junior Champion, brings elite competitive experience, while Zingas adds expressive performance quality and refinement. Together, they have quickly established themselves as a team to watch in U.S. ice dance, competing in ISU Challenger and Grand Prix events.

Zingas was born on April 22, 2002. in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, while Kolesnik was born on October 27, 2001. in Kharkov, Ukraine.

Prior to their partnership, Zingas competed in the women's discipline for Cyprus, while Kolesnik competed in Ice Dance with former partner Avonley Nguyen for the USA.

As the whole of Emilea’s earlier career is dealt with in her thread, but only part of Vadym’s earlier career is dealt with in his and Avonley’s thread, the additional OP’s in this thread will focus on Vadym. Consequently, rather than having just one “Original Post”, this Fan Fest has three!

The first post (this one) is for the current Ice Dance partnership.
The second post is for Vadym’s former partnerships.
The third post is for Vadym as a Singles skater.

My goodness, I was not expecting it to be this long until they would be competing again. :drama:

Oh, how I wish they were representing either Cyprus or the Ukraine. Then we might see them more often!

Anyway, they are back in action today at the Eastern Sectional Championships, which are being held in Norwood, Massachusettes (yes, where Skate America was a few weeks ago).

The Short Dance is due to start at 14:50:00 EST (19:50:00 GMT / 21:50:00 EET). So 12 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 6th partnership to start. So, second partnership to skate in Group 2.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the USFS Entries / Results pages do not include Time Schedules. And I don't know where else to find one.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

Here is the link for the livestream:

Eastern Sectional Championships Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHHl46p1Uds

Emilea and Vadym finished 1st out of 9 in the SD, with a score of 79.58.

Report to be edited in once I watch the video

Emilea and Vadym are currently 0.59 points ahead of 2nd position, Isabella FLORES / Ivan DESYATOV (Thunderbirds), and 9.19 points ahead of 3rd position, Angela LING (Peninsula) / Caleb WEIN (Washington).

Although they have now done three competition segments together, and have led them all, Emilea and Vadym cannot afford to rest in their laurels this time. They do not have the big advantage here like they did in Lake Placid. They are going to have to have a very good Free Dance if they are to be sure of keeping Flores / Desyatov behind them.

And because this event has a random draw for the Free rather than having everybody skate in the reverse order of the Short results, Isabella and Ivan have ended up with the upper hand. They skate 2 slots after Emilea and Vadym, so they will know how they got on and will be able to use that to their advantage.

Oh, I hope Emilea and Vadym don't lose out on a second Gold medal in their first 2 competitive outings because of this event still following a rule that I always hated and which the ISU sensibly (and very belatedly) got rid of a few years ago.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Free Dance is due to start at 15:35:00 EST (20:35:00 GMT / 22:35:00 EET). So 12 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 5th partnership to start. So, first partnership in Group 2.

Eastern Sectional Championships Free Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqnO5eG3zJ4

Emilea and Vadym finished 1st out of 9 in the FD, with a score of 113.16. This meant that they remained in 1st place overall, with a score of 192.74.

Report to be edited in once I watch the video

Emilea and Vadym finished the FD 4.29 points ahead of 2nd position, Isabella FLORES / Ivan DESYATOV (Thunderbirds), and 10.85 points ahead of 3rd position, Raffaella KONCIUS (Los Angeles) / Alexey SHCHEPETOV (Florida Everblades). Overall, Emilea and Vadym were 4.88 points ahead of 2nd position, Flores / Desyatov, and 21.44 points ahead of 3rd position, Angela LING (Peninsula) / Caleb WEIN (Washington).

I don't know what to say. They have now won 4 segments out of 4. On top of that, they have significantly improved their scores from Lake Placid by around 8 points per programme.

More significantly, in only their second competition together, they have surpassed all the absolute PB scores that Vadym achieved with his previous partner, Avonley Nguyễn. Bearing in mind that Avonley and Vadym were Junior World Champions (with scores lower than their absolute PB), this is a very good sign.

We all knew what Vadym was capable of. But, I am so impressed with Emilea. For her to be achieving these sorts of milestones in only her second Ice Dance competition, after only making the switch from Singles skating a few months ago, is remarkable.

As Emilea and Vadym are my first foray into following skating in America, I don't know how many from Sectionals qualify to Nationals. But it is safe to say that by winning the competition, their place is secured.

Can't wait to see how they do against the more established American partnerships.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Emilea and Vadym are entered for the final Challenger event of the season, the Golden Spin Of Zagreb.

I'm gutted. And so, so angry.

How can they and their team be so short sighted?! By entering an international competition now, it means that they are trapping themselves in the American system for the forseeable future. Because, if they discover that they aren't getting assignments and decide to switch countries at a later date, it means they will have to sit out another year. And that is never a good idea for a young partnership that are on an upwards trajectory.

I can understand why they decided to start off competing in American domestic competitions. They both live in America, and Emilea is brand new to Ice Dance. Although they are friends off ice, they mightn't have gelled as a partnership. Or Emilea mightn't have been able to adjust to ice dancing. So, it made sense to see how things go, and then start making the big decisions.

But why, after only two competitions together, would they then lock themselves in to remain in a large competitive field, where everything is so political and there are no guarantees of getting any international selections, when they could instead be guaranteed regular slots by representing a country where one of them already has citizenship?

Of course, I would love to see them representing Emilea's country, Cyprus. Just imagine what a force the island could become in Ice Dance having Emilea / Vadym and Angelina / Ilia both competing at Senior level. And because both partnerships are so good, there would be no worry about not having enough slots for both partnerships to get selected for the Majors.

Or they could go for Vadym's country, the Ukraine. However, there are already a few good Ukrainian partnerships (Pinchuk / Pogorielov; Golubtsova / Bielobrov; Pidgaina / Koval). And it might not go down too well if Emilea and Vadym came in and immediately deprived one of the home-grown partnerships of a slot. Sure, because they are so good, they would probably immediately earn an additional slot or two for the home-grown partnerships in subsequent seasons. But, a lot of keyboard warriors won't see it like that. They'll see it as them coming in and using a slot that could be used by a home-grown partnership.

No, it would have been better to take the long term view. Establish themselves in domestic competitions in America this season, finding out where they are at relative to other partnerships, and then start competing internationally next season for one of their own countries. That would ensure them a lot of international appearances for many years to come.

But, instead, they have opted to make their presence known on the international circuit as soon as possible.

Very short sighted. 😞

But, that won't stop me cheering them on! ;)

CaroLiza_fan

Well, the day has now arrived when Emilea and Vadym make their international debut. And given my feelings about it, it is perhaps fate that I probably won't be able to see it because the Golden Spin Of Zagreb is living up to it's reputation of being a disorganised mess.

The Short Dance is due to start at 11:00:00 CET (05:00:00 EST / 10:00:00 GMT / 12:00:00 EET). So 3 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 5th partnership to start. So, fifth and last partnership to skate in Group 1.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 11:00:00 CET (05:00:00 EST / 10:00:00 GMT / 12:00:00 EET). So 3 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym are due to start at 11:32:10 CET (05:32:10 EST / 10:32:10 GMT / 12:32:10 EET). So 3h 32m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

Golden Spin Of Zagreb Senior Short Dance: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Emilea and Vadym finished 3rd out of 20 in the SD, with a score of 73.14.

Report to be edited in when I have a chance to go through the protocols.

Thank you to @Andrea82 for pointing out in the competition thread that Emilea and Vadym had the highest Base Value of the field, at 31.70. I would never have noticed that!

Emilea and Vadym are currently 3.40 points behind 2nd position, Christina CARREIRA / Anthony PONOMARENKO (USA), and 3.22 points ahead of 4th position, Jennifer JANSE van RENSBURG / Benjamin STEFFAN (DEU). The current leaders, Allison REED / Saulius AMBRULEVICIUS (LTU), are 4.07 points ahead of Emilea and Vadym. Maria KAZAKOVA / Georgy REVIYA (GEO) are in 5th position, 4.30 points behind Emilea and Vadym.

Emilea and Vadym are in a tricky poistion. With the way the scores are, they have a chance of winning. However, they are also in with a chance of dropping to 5th, or even further depending on how things go in the Free Dance.

So, they will have to make sure they have a good Free Dance.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Free Dance is due to start at 11:00:00 CET (05:00:00 EST / 10:00:00 GMT / 12:00:00 EET). So 3 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be competing in their first American Championships together today in San José, California.

The Short Dance is due to start at 15:30 PST (18:30 EST Thursday / 23:30 GMT Thursday / 01:30 EET Friday). So 17 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 14th partnership to start. So, penultimate partnership of the segment.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the USFS Entries / Results pages do not include Time Schedules. And I don't know where else to find one.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

???? [It's on Peacock, but I can't access the site to get the link due to being in the UK]

No Time Schedule 😞

American Championships Senior Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow3ob7XojKA

Emilea and Vadym finished 3rd out of 14 in the SD, with a score of 78.18.

Obviously, due to the time difference and lack of an international stream, I was not able to watch LIVE. However, thanks to a kind soul who has uploaded the video of their programme to YouTube, I was able to watch Emilea and Vadym there now.

Honestly, it looked faultless to me. So, I will have to go into the protocols to see what they say.

And, the protocols agree. Of all the Judges marks, there was only one mark that was not positive. And that was a 0 for the Twizzles. However, it should be noted that the 0 came from Judge 5, who was consistently marking lower than the other Judges.

The Twizzles were the element that got the lowest marks, with two +3's; three +2's; three +1's; and the 0 from Judge 5. It also got the lowest GOE, at +1.37. And that should say everything about how well they did. Because most partnerships would kill for scores like that. And yet, these scores were for their lowest scoring element. For all their other elements, it was mostly +4's and +3's, with the odd +2.

Emilea and Vadym are currently 3.22 points behind 2nd position, Caroline GREEN (Pavilion SC Of Cleveland Heights) / Michael PARSONS (Washington FSC), and 0.81 points ahead of 4th position, Christina CARREIRA (SC Of New York) / Anthony PONOMARENKO (SC Of San Francisco). Emilea and Vadym are at the head of a group where 5 partnerships are covered by 2.66 points, stretching down to Eva PATE (Strongsville SC) / Logan BYE (SC Of New York) in 7th position.

The current leaders, Madison CHOCK (All Year FSC) / Evan BATES (Ann Arbor FSC), are 13.72 points ahead of Emilea and Vadym. So, they are well out of range. But, Emilea and Vadym do have a good shot at the runner-up spot. However, as well as the rest of the group, the partnerships in 8th and 9th positions are also within striking distance. Oona BROWN (SC Of New York) / Gage BROWN (SC Of New York) in 9th position are only 5.38 points behind Emilea and Vadym.

Although 3rd position after the SD sounds like a good position, it is actually very precarious. To maintain a podium position, or even a Top 5 position, Emilea and Vadym will have to make sure they have a good Free Dance.

So, let's hope they do.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

The Free Dance is due to start at 10:40 PST (13:40 EST / 18:40 GMT / 20:40 EET ). So 12 hours from now.

Emilea and Vadym will be the 12th and antepenultimate partnership to start.

And that is as much as I can tell you, because the USFS Entries / Results pages do not include Time Schedules. And I don't know where else to find one.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.
