Some updates for 2024-25!

Sofia Samodelkina will take part in the Summer Figure Skating Championships of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which will be held on 15-18 July. She is entered as a Junior, potentially hoping for a JGP spot.

Any information about the competition and links to the official site for FS in Kazakstan would be appreciated, because https://skating.kz/ is like one year out of date and last news is that they split the fed into 2 in July 2023.

Being a big fan of Shaidorov and Samodelkina, plus watching the other young Kazakstani skaters on the JGP circuit and in 4CC, I think it would be nice to have the thread... or maybe the entire Central Asia Skating?

While searching for anything to track Kazakhstan FS, I spotted this recent interview with Samodelkina, now officially-officially representing Kazakstan, from July 6, 2024.

Of interest:

This year's Nationals will take place in Karaganda:

Q: Will the national championships take place in Astana or Almaty? (This is the July event)
Sofia Samodelkina:
In Karaganda! My mom was born in this city. She even promised to show me the places from her childhood if there is spare time.

As for Samodelkina herself, here are bits her plans and her commitment to represent Kazakstan--and I love it that she underscores her connection to her new country through her mom.

Q: Has a competition schedule for this season been compiled yet?
Sofia Samodelkina:
It will be discussed after the Kazakhstan Championships. I can definitely say that I will participate in the Denis Ten Memorial.

Q: In Russia, national team skaters receive funding from the FFKR and the Ministry of Sports. What about in Kazakhstan?
Sofia Samodelkina:
I can’t say anything about it because I’m not even on the national team yet. I think everything will become clearer in July after the competitions in Karaganda.

Q: Is there a requirement that you spend part of your training time in Kazakhstan?
Sofia Samodelkina:
I can’t answer that question yet. I think that I’ll be traveling to Kazakhstan regularly throughout the season to meet with federation leaders and local judges.

Q: Tennis player Yulia Putintseva, who changed her citizenship to Kazakh, said during a tournament in St. Petersburg that she had learned the words to the national anthem in the Kazakh language. Have you started learning it yet?
Sofia Samodelkina:
Yes, I have. I’m not sure I’ll be able to speak Kazakh correctly, but I’ll try.

Dias Jirenbayev is currently taking part of a summer training camp at Germany held by Michael Huth for a month.

While Rakhat finishes his camp at Bulgaria where Professor Mishin conduct his training camp there a few weeks ago.

As for Misha that he has a separate overseas training in Korea and Italy for the month of May before doing a summer training camp with his coach Urmanov and Righini at Turkiye.

I almost forgot that I saw Artur's progress after a year with Team Raf that his 3A is improving which I can't wait to see his improvement in the JGP (note: if anyone noticed him coachless in the K&C in the coming season that he doesn't have the means to bring along the coaches to the comps while Raf himself didn't want to travel for comps after Nathan's win at the Olympics) He'll turn 17 by the end of this month.

Hopefully Rakhat will be back on track this year. He seemed to struggle last season.

I really enjoy Dias' skating style, it has this classic quality a bit like Denis Ten (no surprise considering who his main coach is) :) Hope the camp with Mr Huth is fruitful!

I believe that he can overcome the transition from Junior to Senior which his current coach Olga Romanova (I remember that she is one of Mishin's students back in her days as a skater) is the right coach for his case since she coaches her son Nikolaj Memola with the height of 195 cm which can do 4Lz and 3A.

I saw some shorts at Twitter that he managed to get back his 3A (he lost it for a while as he changes his coaches between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 season) along practicing with 3A3T combo and 4S

There is something unique about Oksana Ten that before she takes her coaching license as a FS coach that she was a professor of Music with a specialization of the violin according to news articles.

Also that while Denis was alive back then that she observed the coaches which her son works with meaning that she was able to take notes and learn from them particularly with the late Frank Carroll to put it into practice. In her work that her strength as a coach is more or less a PCS coach if we notice Dias' scores in the PCS which is nice.

I agree. And if Dias' gets a stable quad he will become a top 10 skater.

I was wondering if both Michael Huth and Oksana Ten should collaborate for Dias' sake.

Thank you for this information, I am really looking forward to see what Romanova can accomplish with Bralin, not to mention Memola.

The link worked for me, but all I saw for five or so minutes before I gave up was a fogged-up empty ice surface, with people occasionally walking past the camera. No skaters or skating, but at least the link does work, if that helps?

Sofia fell on the first jump of her 3-3 combo in the SP. Good luck for tomorrow!

Edit: Is there a result page for this event?

Just tried the link again out of curiosity (midnight where I am on the Pacific coast) and this time managed to see one girl's performance although I don't know who (purple dress with pink underskirt?). I wouldn't want to be a judge -- impossible to see the jump landings in all that fog at the ends of the rink!

Samodelkina is shockingly out of shape (in terms of athletic performance). Given that she was always inconsistent and prone to URs, I expected she might skate on the level of Gubanova with an occasional Challenger podium and top 10-15 placements at ISU Championships (she'll have to do 4CC instead of Euros), but she has a long way to go for that.
Currently, the SP consists of cross-overs and waving her arms around. Jumps were 2A, 3F, 3Lz (fall). She stumbled twice in the step sequence. Last spin was nice. Should score around 50 points, maybe a bit more since it's a domestic competition (ETA: she got 51.23).
There are still a few months until the start of the international season, let's see how much she can improve until then.

She might had a back injury. Especially looking at her layback.

I watched the first two groups of men, but it was getting late for me on Zamboni. It's archived, though, so I will catch up on the women. They start at 1:51 mark of the stream

3 first guys in warm up group 2 looked pretty good, but I only recognized Melnikov in the fog.
