Figure Skating in the Philippines

I don’t see them on the Nationals list either, but I’d say this is probably a good decision since they are on the entries lists for NRW Trophy in Dortmund, Germany next week, and Challenger Series Warsaw Cup the following week. They need those WS points!
They won't get WS points at NRW (as of today, not enough couples entered), but could get Tech mins and likely a gold medal! I'll post a preview on their Fan Fest soon.

There are new Philippines Nationals Champions! Results below.
Philippines Nationals 2024 Final Results

I’m really interested to learn more about this new Senior Women’s Champion - Maxine Marie Bautista. Any USFS fans able to weigh in?

Nice to see Cathryn Limketkai win silver. I was really hoping to see her on the JGP scene, but since her WD at Cranberry Cup, I wonder if she will have additional competition opportunities to get the increased Jr Worlds combined technical minimums if this is her last season in juniors.

Sofia Frank has really regressed dropping to 4th place in the FS and bronze overall. Maybe she is more focused on the modeling thing, or I hope she is able to get back on track.

Although there’s only one Senior Man, I like seeing that Paolo Borromeo is practicing/trying quads (on his Instagram).

I would really like to see PHI send Maxine to ISU competitions so she can get her official SBs or minimums. Her score at Boston would have qualified her for Four Continents and be just 7 points short of qualifying for Worlds.

Seems like this is what the Philippines federation is planning to do.

Their Instagram posted this recent media article focused on Maxine Bautista as the rep for Asian Winter Games, and I assume other international assignments will follow.

Manila Standard - Bautista upstages Frank

You’re entitled to your opinion but that doesn’t mean I agree. You’re referring to funding issues with MCM almost 10 years ago now, Sofia Frank and G/K interviews and rumors from several seasons back - not today, this season. I see that you also spoke very harshly and negatively about Edrian Celestino as well making all sorts of incorrect assumptions. We don’t know what’s going on. Skating at the elite level is hard, but any sport at the elite level is hard to navigate - team dynamic, funding, shifting goals, etc. You say Sofia’s mom sometimes read this thread, so just want to say to these skaters and parents if they ever come across this - there may be negative fans, but there are also sooooo many that support you!! 💙
Looks like this has been aged badly according to my sources whom they witnessed her performance. One of my acquintance mentioned that she got an impression that Sofia is trying to prove that being with Gambil is working in the past. But past results does not reflect on the present since there are a lot of discussions in another site that Tammy wasn't good in handling older skaters or growing thru puberty. Her specialty is politics.

Cathryn Limketkai competed in both the junior and senior women categories at Bosphorus Cup in Turkey. She probably is still aiming for those Jr. Worlds scores and possibly 4CC TES mins? There was almost a 30 point difference between her Junior and Senior points in just a couple of days so it seems she is capable.

Sofia Frank also competed at Santa Claus Cup in Budapest. She barely cracked 100.84 (combined SP and FS). Far below what is probably now her “peak” back in 2021-2022 which was close to 150 points. I feel bad for Sofia, and really hope she is getting the support she needs as she keeps speaking to the Philippines media (recent articles) about her mental health issues.

Philippines announced their entries.
  • Men: Pablo Borromeo.
  • Women: Sofia Frank, Cathryn Limketkai. (Their reigning women's champion Maxine Bautista can't go because she is awaiting release from the US federation.)
  • Pairs: Isabella Gamez and Alexander Korovin.
Philippines has never won a Winter Asian Games medal and they have a good chance for their first one with Gamez/Korovin.
Reposting from the Asian Games thread!
In the figure skating category, Gamez/Korovin have the best chance of getting a medal and therefore Philippine's first medal in the Asian Winter Games. Entries are not out yet, but with the Japan entries already announced and taking into account the currently competing pairs from Uzbekistan, China, and North Korea, G/K could nab at least bronze if they produce two clean skates with their highest possible base value.
I'm not up to date on the other sports and not sure if the other Philippine athletes could get close to the podium... Perhaps Groseclose?

Oh wow… that’s too bad Maxine Bautista isn’t eligible to compete internationally yet for PH. I was really hoping to see her for the second half of the season.

I also saw that PH will be represented at the FISU University Games coming up with Skye Chua. Exciting!

Updates made regarding medal eligible and standings in Junior Ladies medals are now reflected.

Philippine men's champ Paolo Borromeo just got his CTES mins to qualify for 4CC. Congrats Paolo!

He scored 128.01 in the FS at Sofia Trophy today, his highest FS score to date (will not count for ISU PB). TES 65.30 PCS 62.71. No falls in his FS but he is still working on landing a clean 3A in competition. He also said in a recent video that he is working on quads. Excited to see what he can show us at 4CC.

Philippines now has skaters qualified for the men's (Borromeo), women's (Frank), and pairs (Gamez/Korovin) segments at 4CC in Seoul next month.

Charmaine Skye Chua is at the Winter University Games as the Philippines' first-ever representative!
In her short program, she posted a new season's best of 26.69 but did not place high enough to pass to the free skate. All of her elements received negative GOE, so lots of room for improvement. :)
Does anyone know if she trains in Manila or in the USA?

Cathryn Limketkai was competing in Juniors and Seniors at the Volvo Open Cup this week but withdrew from both free skates. I hope she is not injured!
She is still in search of CTES minimums for Junior Worlds and 4CC. She is currently on the entry lists for both Juniors and Seniors at Bavarian Open next weekend.

Not injured, that I can confirm. She is planning on skating in Oberstdorf. This is from what she has told my daughter today.

Skye trains in Manila while attending University of the Philippines and acting.
