New arch pain in 1-year-old Edea Ice flies

Hi all! I've been skating in a pair of ice flies for almost exactly a year now. I am an adult/collegiate figure skater. I skate during the school year around 4 times a week ranging from 1-3 hours as a hobby/club sport vibe, and I've been working on doubles like loop and doing gold dances. I have been wearing edeas for around 7 years now and have had slight discomforts here and there but nothing like the current pain I am feeling. . This summer I have been working quite a bit and have skating only once a week. Starting this summer I noticed an almost shooting pain when I skate that intensifies especially when I do ice dance that comes from the side/middle of my foot that will go away the second I take off my skates. It has now almost become unbearable during the 15 min dance lesson I take to the point where I have to take off my skates immediately after. I then put them back on to do freestyle and twizzles and only feel a slight discomfort. If I do start doing deep edge work during this, the pain arises again. I would say my feet have a lower arch, but a doctor has never pushed for me to put inserts in my shoes. I have a weak left ankle from numerous injuries, but this pain is in both feet. I have tried stretching, messaging, and rolling out my feet before hand and switiching out the insoles to more supported insoles (the yellow smart feet ones, an insole I have used in the past). I have an appointment with a fitter soon, but wanted some other opinions. Could it be just because I have been skating less/ or like swollen 'summer feet'? Hoping its not, but could this seem like I need to be fitted for a different/new skate? Would a heat mold of the skates help?

Welcome to Golden Skate! As they say here, post long and often!

You'll find some very knowledgeable posters here who might be able to help. Good luck!

Hi and welcome. First I would see a doctor for the pain and get their input. Secondly, it could be one of two things depending on your diagnosis: You either don't work with Edea anymore and need to look into different brand. Also, you need a bit softer and lower cut boot for ice dance.

Definitely second seeing a doctor for the pain - your feet are telling you something's up!

In the meantime though, one thought I'm basing on similar pain I've dealt with - have you recently changed your laces, or changed how you tie your skates? Since the pain seems to get better immediately when you take them off, I wonder if you might be overtightening the laces in the front of the boot (below the ankle / hooks).

You did say you've been in Edeas for years, and that this only started recently - so it's probably less likely to be an issue with the lacing - but it was the first thing I thought of, having had similar pain myself when I switched to waxed laces. They stay tighter for longer than traditional laces, which is great - but it also meant that I had to unlearn my habit of lacing my skates really tightly at first, to account for them loosening up once I started skating. Until I figured that out, I had quite a few practice sessions where I had similar pain - sometimes in my arches, and sometimes along the outsides of my feet - that was relieved as soon as I took my skates off.

Again, I absolutely think it's worth discussing with a doctor, as it could also be something like an injury that needs attention, etc - but your description of the pain was pretty similar to the pain I was having, so I thought I'd mention it in case it's helpful!

Impossible to tell for sure from here, but if you've been fine on those skates before, then one of two things, or a little bit of both have probably happened: The boots have changed shape, or your feet has. It's certainly possible that leaving the laces too tight or the boots in a hot car etc. might have changed the shape a little. It's also possible that you have a more swollen feet that is causing or adding to that problem. Your laces could also be in bad shape and you might be lacing them too tight etc.

A podiatrist should be able to say more. The pain you describe isn't very typical, so something must be really pressing a nerve or some muscle there badly in that boot. Before considering new boots, it might be worth molding them again anyways. And changing the laces.

I’ll just share my story., I have Edea Ice Fly. I used them2-3x a week through the year and I’d day almost the entire first year I had very very sore arches. Similar to what you’re describing and whe I took them off the paid was 10/10. It took a few min to get rid of the pain. That has since disappeared. Not sure if it took that long for the boots to fit me properly. I thought I needed arch support insoles so I got the, and that made it worse. I am ok with them now but it took me quite a while for mine to stop hurting.
