The Personal Best and Season Best scores that the ISU uses for a skater only take into consideration certain competitions. For example, they do not take into consideration domestic competitions, such as Sectional, Regional or National Championships.

However, confusion arises when you come to the Major International Championships and the Senior B’s.

For the Majors, the ISU definitely takes into consideration the events they run themselves, and the Olympics. But, there does not seem to be any consistency over how they approach other events that are considered to be Majors.

And as for the Senior B’s, it is particularly confusing as an event may be taken into consideration one year, but not the next. Much of this is due to the changing make-up of the Challenger Series.

So, to make things simpler, some of the Fan Fests include a table that takes into consideration all the events that the skater has taken part in. These scores are referred to as “Absolute Personal Best” and “Absolute Season’s Best” so as to distinguish them from the scores recorded by the ISU.

Absolute Personal Best Score
Absolute Season’s Best Score

The Absolute designations in these tables are based purely on the contents of the Competitive History table in the same post. If anybody knows of any scores that are not in the table, please let us know, and we will be only too happy to add them in.

As always when comparing scores, it should be kept in mind that you are not comparing like for like. There is a subjective aspect to judging, and every competition has different judges.

For the purposes of these tables, the competitions are defined as follows:

Major Championships
Olympics; Senior World Championships; Junior World Championships; European Championships; Four Continents Championships; Universiade; Youth Olympic Games; International Children’s Games; Asian Games; European Youth Olympic Festival; World Team Trophy; Team Challenge Cup.

Grands Prix
Senior Grand Prix Final; Junior Grand Prix Final; Senior Grand Prix competitions; Junior Grand Prix competitions.

Other International Competitions
Challenger Series competitions; other Senior B competitions.

National Competitions
National Championships; Regional / Sectional Championships; other domestic competitions.

An additional consideration occurs because of changes in rules and scoring from year to year. The expansion of GOE from +/- 3 to +/- 5 in Season 2018-2019 renders comparisons with scores in earlier seadons extremely dubious.

Now that all the PBs are historical, any link of the old ones takes us to the new ones rather than any archived version. Should we just take them out for now? since I have yet to find an archived version

Oh. I thought it was just a glitch in the ISU website that would be rectified soon.

Right, I just had a look, and the Wayback Machine has archived versions from 12[SUP]th[/SUP] August for all the pages.

I'm not sure what would be the best way of working this. We would really need to have both sets of PB's included, but it could get complicated if it is not displayed in a way that makes crystal clear what exactly each score is.

Let me sleep on it...

OK, so having slept on it, these are my thoughts on what would be a good way of avoiding confusion.

For those of you (like me) that are using Doris’ ISU PB table, we could have one table but with two distinctive sections.

Here is how it would look for the most recent Singles skater Fan Fest that I worked on:

With Ice Dance, this season also sees the name of the Short Programme change to “Rhythm Dance”. But, since it is just a name change rather than a new set of technical rules, we can get away with keeping the same layout.

Here is how it would look for the Ice Dance Fan Fest that I am currently touching up:

Of course, you would need to add extra columns for those Ice Dancers that were competing when we had separate segments for Compulsory Dance and Original Dance.

The problem with this is that we end up with a lot of columns that are largely empty. So, an alternative option is to have separate tables with headings indicating which system each table is for.

Here is how this would work for Bobrova / Soloviev:

You can see how much tidier it looks without all the blank cells.

As for the PB table that I use which separates the competitions out into what type of competition they are, there are two options:

 1. Just continue on replacing the scores like we have been.

 2. Have separate tables with headings indicating which system each table is for.

Using Kostornaia again, here is how the second option would look:

The benefit of this option is that it means that, for the +5 / -5 GOE System table, we could get rid of the columns for the Elements segment that is contested at Novice level in some Russian competitions.

The drawback, though, is that if the PB table was separated into 2 tables, then the main results table in the Competitive History section would really need to be separated into 2 tables as well. And having so many tables could make the Fan Fest hard to follow.

However, for the likes of Bobrova / Soloviev who have competed under both 2 and 3 Segment systems in Ice Dance, having separate tables the whole way through could make things a lot tidier, as each table could only have the columns that are actually needed.

It would take up too much space showing how this would work on their results table. But, you can imagine what it would be like from looking at their separate ISU PB tables above.

So, balancing everything up, I think having separate tables for each system in all sections of the Fan Fest is the best option.

Those are my thoughts on how we could tackle this. What do other people think?
