Seriously good acting, costumes and sets/props.

Violent times, those were.

The prequel, BBC's "I, Claudius", which is actually a sequel on the timeline of history, is a pinnacle in television drama: I, Claudius

Just in case anyone needs a second, "Rome" was amazing.

Spousal unit the classics professor says it is one of the most historically and archeologically accurate dramatizations of Ancient Rome he has seen.

Not that we didn't love "I Claudius" (with Patrick Stewart in a wig as Sejanus :) )

This was a great show. I am forever disappointed it didn't go past two seasons.

Also, agree with you on I Clavdivs. (That's what we called it. LOL). That show was a masterpiece, relying heavily on the considerable acting skills of Derek Jacobi, and very little on anything else.
