We are wondering about the progress our daughter has been making and would really appreciate any thoughts you might have.
DD will turn 6 this winter. Below is a quick summary of her skating history
Since we are not in the states anymore, our testing curriculum is a different. She passed the equivalent of Basic 3/4 a few months back and is currently working on the next test. This next test consists of spiral, backward crossovers, 2x chasses followed by forward outside edge, waltz jump (without entry/exit), forward inside edge followed by crossovers followed by forward inside edge hold, but no 3-turns, just to show how the curriculum differs from Basic 5.
I have heard a lot of kids progressing through the Learn to Skate program through Basic 6 within a year and also locally, some kids pass those two tests within a year. A lot of them manage this with just group lessons, so we started to wonder if we're doing something wrong. At the same time, I also know that DD is only just turning 6 this winter. She struggles with remembering the patterns she has to do (seems more like a mental maturity problem rather than skating ability).
Can you share your experience on what progress one can expect with this age? Also, what would be the "right" amount of training at this age? We don't have Olympics dreams but would like her to be competitive and enjoy skating. Most recently, she did a camp where she skated every day for five days and she absolutely loved it (asked if she could forever not go to school and just skate ). Outside of skating, she does gymnastics for fun twice a week in a club.
