Sofía VAL and Nikita VITRYANYUK (Russian: Никита ВИТРЯНЮК) are Ice Dancers who represent 🇪🇸 Spain.

Sofía Val was born on 14th November 2004 in Madrid, Community of Madrid, 🇪🇸 Spain.
Nikita Vitryanyuk was born on 6th October 2001 in Moscow, 🇷🇺 Russia.

This is going to be a slightly different Fan Fest. Sofía and Nikita both have previous partnerships in Ice Dance, and both competed in Singles skating before that. Nikita’s whole career is dealt with extensively in his own Fan Fest, and his Ice Dance career is also dealt with in the Fan Fest threads for his former partners (Anastasia Burkina and Maria Miliukova). Sofía’s previous partnership with Linus Colmor Jepsen is dealt with extensively in the Fan Fest for that partnership, as well as in Linus’ own Fan Fest. However, her Singles career is not covered elsewhere in the Fan Fest Forum.

Consequently, rather than having just one “Original Post”, this Fan Fest has two!

The first post (this one) is for the current Ice Dance partnership.
The second post is for Sofía as a Singles skater.

(After initially posting this a day early, I am now re-posting it on the correct day).

Sofía and Nikita will be making their first competitive appearance for Spain at this week's Junior Grand Prix, the Ljubljana Cup.

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 16:14:10 CEST (14:14:10 GMT / 15:14:10 BST / 17:14:10 EEST / 17:14:10 MSK). So 9h 14m from now.

Finally got watching the Short Dance from Sofía and Nikita this morning.

ISU Junior Grand Prix Ljubljana Cup Short Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySc9IiO9vqw

Sofía and Nikita finished 6th out of 17 in the SD, with a score of 52.52.

Well, when Nikita's former Cyprus team-mates Angelina Kudriavtseva and Ilia Karankevich debuted their SD for this season, all the talk was about how innovative it was. Well, Sofía and Nikita are also being innovative in their SD!

But first, I want to set the scene. Sofía was wearing a red dress. Nikita was wearing a black leather jacket and trousers. The jacket was open to show a black T-shirt with a red stripe on it (to tie in with Sofía's dress). Suffice to say, they looked the part!

They were skating to a medley of "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees; "Careless Whisper" by George Michael; and "Daddy Cool" by Boney M. I love all those songs. And I think that may have been why I had a slight problem with the programme. Basically, "Staying Alive" was too short. Yes, it gave them the opportunity to start with some fun choreography before the more serious "Careless Whisper" section. But you were left wanting more. Which spoiled the enjoyment of the start of the "Careless Whisper" section.

And, can I just say, it was nice to see Nikita give a nod to the country he grew up in, using a song by probably the most famous person there is with Cypriot heritage, the late great George Michael.

As you can imagine from the music, it was a fun programme. But, the audience really came alive when, towards the end of the programme, they did synchronised cartwheels! I always assumed they would be amongst the things that are banned from competition programmes, but it seems not.

I thought the skating was great. And so did the judges. Looking at the protocols, there is not a single minus on it. And that is very rare. There was a note in the Deductions box at the bottom that I didn't understand, though:

Violation of choreo restrictions (2 of 10)

But, there were no points deducted, so I don't know what that meant.

As it is their first competition, their score was obviously a new PB.

Sofía and Nikita are at the head of a group of 5 partnerships with close scores, which extends down to Alyssa ROBINSON / Jacob PORTZ (CAN) in 11th position, who are 2.30 points behind them. Their closest challengers are Sofiya LUKINSKAYA / Danil PAK (KAZ), who are 0.29 behind them in 7th.

That said, the partnership directly ahead of them, Eva BERNARD / Tom JOCHUM (FRA) in 5th position, are just 3.91 points ahead. And they are only 1.52 points behind 4th position, Sofiia KACHUSHKINA / Oleg MURATOV (RUS). So, there is a chance that, if they put in a good FS, Sofía and Nikita could move up a couple of places.

Wherever they do finish, it would be a brilliant result for what is their first international competition together.

:cheer: WELL DONE!! :cheer:

The Free Dance is due to start at 17:20:00 CEST (15:20:00 GMT / 16:20:00 BST / 18:20:00 EEST / 18:20:00 MSK). So 10 hours from now.

Sofía and Nikita will be the 12th partnership to start. So, fourth (and last) to go in Group 3.

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 18:40:50 CEST (16:40:50 GMT / 17:40:50 BST / 19:40:50 EEST / 19:40:50 MSK). So 10h 20m from now.

Sofía and Nikita are due to start at 19:07:50 CEST (17:07:50 GMT / 18:07:50 BST / 20:07:50 EEST / 20:07:50 MSK). So 11h 47m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Finally got watching the Free Dance from Sofía and Nikita this morning.

ISU Junior Grand Prix Ljubljana Cup Free Dance: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xICYJ4ZW6g

Sofía and Nikita finished 8th out of 17 in the FD, with a score of 80.69. This meant that they remained in 6th place overall, with a score of 133.21.

That programme was beautiful. Just beautiful. There are no other words for it.

Sofía and Nikita looked stunning in their all black costumes. And they looked so mature. I kept having to remind myself that Sofía is just 16 years old, and Nikita is only a few years older at 19.

Even the skating was so mature. Watching them, you would think they had been together for many years, not a matter of months. It was sublime. I'm not an expert, but I thought it was faultless.

After looking at the protocols for the SP, I commented about there not being a single minus on it. Well, for their FS, Judge #8 gave them -1 for their final 2 elements. Nobody else did, so I don't know what that judge was seeing that nobody else saw.

As you know, I liked Sofía and Linus, and I liked Maria and Nikita. So, I was upset when each of these partnerships split. But, this new partnership looks really good. And I can see them going far in this sport.

:cheer: WELL DONE!! :cheer:

Sofía and Nikita will be back in action at the final Junior Grand Prix of the season, the Cup Of Austria, in just over a week from now.

I really enjoyed their RD. The song combos worked for me, and it was a lot of fun.

Funnily enough, that was actually the thing that surprised me about their other programme. I would never have thought that "Rain In Your Black Eyes" and "Paradise" would work together. But, they did brilliantly! And the transition was so smooth that it was only a while afterwards that I realised "Ah, the song has changed". :p

Looking forward to seeing how they get on in Linz next week, and how they progress as the season goes on.

Sofía and Nikita finished 10th out of 17 in the SD, with a score of 52.02.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time (the first sentence is an answer to my best friend on the forum, who was wondering why George Michael was in what was otherwise a 70's disco programme):

It's because George Michael is half-Cypriot, and Nikita grew up in Cyprus. Simples! :)

Love the music . Love the costumes. Love the skating. Love them.

Don't love that position. The score is half a point lower than they got in their last Junior GP, yet with 2 to go they are already 3 places below where they finished in the SP there.

HOWEVER, the partnership 3 places above them is less than 1.5 points ahead of them, so there is room to climb up.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

After writing that, they slipped down one more position, because the partnership that skated directly after them, Sofya Tyutyunina / Alexander Shustitskiy (RUS), became the overnight leaders.

Looking at the protocols, there were a lot of minuses this time around, compared to no minuses at all in Ljubljana. And, to be honest, I am struggling to work out why. Yes, I saw that one of their sets of Twizzles were out of sync, but that was the only thing I could see that was an issue.

On the positive side of things, there were no choreographic violations this time. So, they must have found out what the thing the judges had issue with was and changed it.

As I said at the time, they are currently at the bottom of a very tight group where 7th to 10th are covered by less than 1.5 points. In fact, 3rd position is just less than 10 points away. So, if they have a good Free Dance, there is definitely an opportunity to move up the table considerably. But, they also have to be careful, as the Estonian partnership in 11th is 3.21 points behind them, and they are leading a tight group of 3 partnerships.

Looking forward to the Free Dance tomorrow morning!

:cheer: WELL DONE!! :cheer:

The Free Dance is due to start tomorrow at 09:00:00 CEST (07:00:00 GMT / 08:00:00 BST / 10:00:00 EEST / 10:00:00 MSK). So 12 hours from now.

Sofía and Nikita will be the 8th partnership to start. So, fourth to go in Group 2 (and last to gobefore the resurfacing).

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 09:34:10 CEST (07:34:10 GMT / 08:34:10 BST / 10:34:10 EEST / 10:34:10 MSK). So 12h 34m from now.

Sofía and Nikita are due to start at 10:01:10 CEST (08:01:10 GMT / 09:01:10 BST / 11:01:10 EEST / 11:01:10 MSK). So 13h 01m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before them withdraws.

Sofía and Nikita finished 11th out of 17 in the FD, with a score of 74.70. This meant that they dropped to 11th place overall, with a score of 126.72.

To be honest, this score and position does not do the programe justice.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time (the first sentence is a reply to a friend of mine, who had commented about the change of music being random):

That was the thing that surprised me when their ISU Bio was created. I would never have thought of putting those two pieces of music together. But, when I actually saw the programme for the first time, I was surprised to find that it worked really well!

Beautiful, just beautiful.

Pity about them getting out of sync in the Twizzles. The same thing happened yesterday, so perhaps something that needs to be worked on.

Otherwise, it was sublime.

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

When you look at the Protocols, it is clear to see that the Twizzles were the main problem. All but two judges gave them -2 , with the others giving them -1 (Judge 9) and -3 (Judge 7). All their other elements had scores ranging from 0 to 1, or 0 to 2.

As it was Nikita that had the problem, my aforementioned friend drew the comparison with another Ice Dancer called Nikita who famously had problems with his Twizzles. But, as another friend pointed out, Katsalapov still did pretty well for himself! ;)

The thing is, although the Twizzles were the problem in both segments this week, they went fine in Ljubljana. So, this is just a temporary issue. Nothing to worry ourselves about.

After the SP, I pointed out that they were 3.21 points ahead of an Estonian partnership that was leading a tight group of 3 partnerships. Well, that Estonian partnership, Solene Mazingue / Marko Jevgeni Gaidajenko, had a very good FS and climbed up to 9th overall, finishing 4.51 points ahead of our kids. That is why Sofía and Nikita dropped a place. They finished up 4.22 points behind the partnership ahead of them, Denisa Cimlová / Vilém Hlavsa (CZE), and 4.79 points ahead of Yulia Lebedeva-Bitadze / Dmitri Parkhomenko (GEO).

All in all, I am very happy with how Sofía and Nikita got on in their first two Junior Grands Prix together.

Sofía and Nikita are still very young for Ice Dancers, both in terms of age and experience in this category. For each of them, this is only their third season of competing in Ice Dance. They are still learning their trade. And considering how good they are already, they are looking like very hot prospects for the future.

I can't wait until the next time we get to see them in action!

Sofía and Nikita finished 5th out of 10 in the SD, with a score of 50.54.

Although I had left watching LIVE after partnership #5 last night, I did come back briefly to watch Sofía and Nikita before leaving again. Consequently, I didn't get a chance to comment in the competition thread at the time. However, my initial thoughts were that they went out of sync a couple of times, but otherwise it was great!

Then I looked at the protocols this morning.

Maybe it was because of what happened last time out, but I was keeping a close eye on the Twizzles. And I thought they went out of sync on one of the sets. But, there was no sign of this in the protocols. All the judges gave them positive marks. So, that was a relief.

However, I did see them go out of sync towards the end of the programme. And this was reflected in the protocols. Five judges gave them 0, but two judges gave them -1, and another gave them -2. These were their only minuses for the programme.

The worrying thing is that we had the "Violation of choreo restrictions" note again. This time, it was 3 judges that voted for the violation, so not enough for it to be carried. But, it is still a concern that this is appearing at all.

Sofía and Nikita are currently 0.44 points behind the French partnership in 4th position, Lila-Maya Seclet Monchot / Martin Chardain. In fact, they are only 2.32 behind the Italian partnership in 3rd position, Noemi Maria Tali / Stefano Frasca, and 3.05 behind the French partnership in 2nd position, Eva Bernard / Tom Jochum. So, there is a very real chance of a podium.

However, they are 2.69 points ahead of the French partnership in 6th position Louise Bordet / Thomas Gipoulou. And they are heading an extremely close group of three French partnerships that are covered by less than half a point! So, Sofía and Nikita had better be careful come the Free Dance.

:cheer: WELL DONE!! :cheer:

The Free Dance is due to start at 18:45:00 CEST (16:45:00 GMT / 17:45:00 BST / 20:45:00 EEST / 20:45:00 MSK). So 12 hours from now.

Sofía and Nikita will be the 6th partnership to start. So, first to go in Group 2.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 19:25:30 CEST (17:25:30 GMT / 18:25:30 BST / 20:25:30 EEST / 20:25:30 MSK). So 12h 40m from now.

Sofía and Nikita are due to start at 19:31:00 CEST (17:31:00 GMT / 18:31:00 BST / 20:31:00 EEST / 20:31:00 MSK). So 12h 6m from now.

We have now reached Day 3 of the Ice Challenge, which means that it is the day that the action starts for Sofía and Nikita.

The Junior Short Dance is due to start at 10:15:00 CET (09:15:00 GMT / 11:15:00 EET / 12:15:00 MSK). So 3 hours from now.

Sofía and Nikita will be the 6th partnership to start. So, third to go in Group 2 (and penultimate partnership to go before the resurfacing).

However, since there are no Time Schedules for this event, I have no idea what time they are due to start.

Sofía and Nikita finished 4th out of 10 in the SD, with a score of 52.12.

I wasn't able to watch LIVE, as Free Practice 1 for final round of the MotoGP in Valencia was on. But, I did go back and watch Sofía and Nikita's programme during the first set of adverts that came on in the bikes after they had skated.

Suffice to say, the scores are telling the truth. This was right up there with their Junior GP performances. I didn't spot any issues at all when watching it.

And we had no violation notes either, which was a relief.

The Top 2 are out of reach of the rest of the field. Sofía and Nikita are only 1.54 points behind the partnership currently occupying third position, Darya GRIMM / Michail SAVITSKIY (DEU). And they are 0.21 points ahead of the partnership currently occupying fifth position, Anna SIMOVA / Kirill AKSENOV (SVK). The problem is that, apart from the Top 2, the entire field is in a very close group. Just 6.57 points covers 3rd place to last place. So, anything can happen in the Free Dance.

Sofía and Nikita put in a great performance in the Short, and they will need to do so again in the Free.

:cheer: WELL DONE!! :cheer:

The Free Dance is due to start at 10:00:00 CET (09:00:00 GMT / 11:00:00 EET / 12:00:00 MSK). So 3 hours from now.

Sofía and Nikita finished 4th out of 12 in the SD, with a score of 51.12.

Before I paste in what I wrote in the competition thread after they did their programme, I have to paste in what I wrote during the Warm-Up, as I refer to it in my subsequent post:

Mmmm. When the stream came on air, the Zamboni was still on the ice. And while it was still going, they started playing the music that my kids are skating to (they are going first), presumably to test that everything is working.

Let's hope they remember to re-wind the music, so that we don't have any delays!

And just before the announcer started talking, they showed a shot of the gate, and Sofía was hanging out of the gap, looking like she couldn't wait to get out there!

That's my girl!

CaroLiza_fan

And now, here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

First and foremost, they did remember to re-wind the music after the test.

A great start to the competition. I didn't see anything wrong with it.

They are looking very serious waiting for their results. So, maybe there were issues that I didn't spot.

51.12 points. That's only 1 point less than they got last time out in Graz, and only 1.50 points lower than their absolute PB.

So, nothing to be disappointed about!

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

The good news is that the protocols by and large agree with my assessment. The only issue was the second Blues Section, where they only hit the fourth keypoint and got minus GOE and -1's from all the judges. But, it didn't spoil the programme.

Sofía and Nikita are currently at the top of a tight group of 3 partnerships. They are 0.73 points ahead of Olivia OLIVER / Joshua ANDARI (POL) in 5th position, and exactly 1 point ahead of Louise BORDET / Thomas GIPOLOU (FRA) in 6th position. They are also exactly 3 points behind 3rd position, Tatjana BUNINA / Ivan KUZNETSOV (EST). However, the three partnerships that are currently in the podium positions are very close together, to the extent that the leaders, Mariia PINCHUK / Mykyta POGORIELOV (UKR), are only 4.32 points ahead of Sofía and Nikita.

So, although there is a possibility of dropping places, there is also the possibility of winning any colour of medal.

:cheer: WELL DONE!! :cheer:

The Free Dance is due to start at 13:00:00 CET (12:00:00 GMT / 14:00:00 EET / 15:00:00 MSK). So 6 hours from now.

Sofía and Nikita will be the 9th partnership to start. So, first to go in Group 3.

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 14:14:00 CET (13:14:00 GMT / 15:14:00 EET / 16:14:00 MSK). So 7h 14m from now.

Sofía and Nikita are due to start at 14:19:30 CEST (13:19:30 GMT / 15:19:30 EET / 16:19:30 MSK). So 7h 19m from now.

Sofía and Nikita finished 6th out of 12 in the FD, with a score of 74.47. This meant that they dropped to 5th place overall, with a score of 125.59.

Due to it being on when I awas having my Sunday Dinner, I didn't get watching the Free Dance LIVE. Fortunately, the livestream did not get zapped, so I was able to watch it the following morning.

The only issue I saw was a stumble from Nikita in the second set of Twizzles. When you go to the Protocols, this was the only element that got minus GOE and produced minuses from the judges.

The element after the Twizzles, the Rotational Lift, got a -1 from Judge 6, and zeros from the others. But, I am having trouble working out why. The only thing I can think of was that they maybe didn't like the way Nikita set Sofía down at the end. But, I didn't have any problem with it.

Sofía and Nikita finished the Free Dance 1.79 points behind 5th position, Noemi Maria TALI / Stefano FRASCA (ITA), and
2.25 points ahead of 7th position, Eva BERNARD / Tom JOCHUM (FRA). Overall, they finished 1.48 points behind 4th position, Olivia OLIVER / Joshua ANDARI (POL), and 0.89 points ahead of Tali / Frasca.

I don't know for sure, but I guess that the next time Sofía and Nikita will be in action is at the Spanish Championships in 3 weeks time.
