Did you wonder whether all the US Team members qualified to Nationals? I did...and in some cases, I am still wondering.

If you what's going in the case of skaters with question marks after their name(s), highlighted in yellow, Please Say!

And for those who will not be at Nationals, highlighted in blue, please join me in a moment of sadness.

USA Team Envelope skaters may have byes
Those competing internationally during sectionals definitely do.
I have tried to determine which of these skaters have byes, and put the reason for it under their name.

Bye rules

Here is what the USFSA Rule book says. May it help you figure this out.

http://www.usfigureskating.org/content/2017-18 Rulebook.pdf

First, some skaters listed as not going may be called up as alternates:

2480 Alternates – Singles, Pairs and Ice Dance

2481 Skaters placing fifth and sixth in qualifying competitions in each of the senior, junior, novice, intermediate and juvenile events will be designated as first and second alternates for their region/section. All alternates will be provided with an application to file with the next competition, national or sectional. The skaters should continue to train and be prepared should they become eligible to compete.

2482 Alternates may be selected up to 24 hours before the start of the affected skater’s first competitive event.

2500 Qualifying for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships

Top 4 at sectionals qualify. There are also fill-up rules, if there are fewer than 4 competitors in a sectionals event, for pairs and dance.

.

A. Fill-Up Rule: For pair and ice dance events only, if there are four or fewer teams from one or more sections, additional competitors from the same event in other sections will be permitted to enter in order to bring the number of competitors up to a maximum of 12 (or more, if ties make it necessary). These additional competitors will be selected in the order of their placement. Should this result in two or more competitors qualifying for one additional place, all will be included, even if this causes the total number of competitors in the event to exceed 12.

1. If a pair or ice dance event already has 12 or more competitors due to international byes and/or automatic invitations (rules 2514-2519), there will be no fill-ups to the U.S. Figure Skating Championships for that event.

So Senior Pairs has 2 teams from sectionals, and 9 pairs with plausible bye reasons. Do Erika Smith & AJ Reiss get to be the 12th team? How about Nica Digerness & Danny Neudecker?
Does any other team?

Junior Dance has 10 regular qualifiers, and Christina Carreira & Anthony Ponomarenko who qualify because they made the JGPF. That also would qualify them for Seniors, should they desire to test up. Either way, the fifth place team from Easterns and Midwesterns get to go, because of the tie rule.

Junior Pairs and Junior Dance follow standard fillup rules and have, as far as I can see, no byes.

That leaves Alexandria Yao & Jacob Simon and Elli Kopmar & Jonah Barrett out in the cold, which leads me to ask, are they injured or split, since they did not compete at sectionals?

Additionally, skaters with internal events that conflict with sectionals do not have to compete there, but how close is it for a conflict? I would assume that events scheduled the week before, the week after, and the same week would all qualify.

In seniors, operatively, NHK, IdF, Skate America, and CS Warsaw and CS Tallinn Cup.

No junior events conflict.

Which leaves me unsure of the status of Amber Glenn, who competed at Cup of China.

Are those the rules for US as well as Russia?

If so, I'd like to see Pulkinen and Krasnozhon. Maybe Torgashev but I'm not sure if he's ready.

Did not compete at Sectionals????.
...

Thanks for putting together this labor-intensive table, Doris. Great to have it as a reference in days/weeks/months/years to come.

Hugs to those who did not qualify for Nats.

Comments:

Tomoki Hiwatashi qualified as a Senior at Midwesterns.

The following finished in Top Five at Nationals:
Vincent Zhou
Pfund/Santillan
Stellato/Bartholomay
https://www.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2017/24267/results.html

Calalang/Sidhu did not finish in Top Five at Nationals. (Not sure, but I think they withdrew b/c he was injured??)

I know it was USFS who misspelled her name in the envelope listing, but she is Hanna (only one H) Harrell.

Nitpicking: Smith/Reiss competed at Nepela, not Nebelhorn.

... That leaves Alexandria Yao & Jacob Simon and Elli Kopmar & Jonah Barrett out in the cold, which leads me to ask, are they injured or split, since they did not compete at sectionals? ...

I think Yao/Simon still are together?
They performed in a show this past weekend, IIRC.

BTW, Krasnozhon, Pulkinen, and Torgashev all qualified for the JGPF. They could, if they wanted, compete at Senior Nationals.

Should any of them?

I don't have an opinion about "should" ... but Krasnozhon has said that he will compete as a Senior at Nats this year, and Torgashev did so last year.

How about Alexandra Aldridge and Daniel Eaton in Senior Dance? I think they qualified through Midwesterns.

Although Aldridge/Eaton did qualify, the topic of this thread is this season's Team USA skaters.

This season, A/E do not have USFS envelope funding and are not in the ISP.

Those listed in the OP are Team USA skaters.

Any Senior pairs who did not compete at Sectionals will likely compete at Nationals baring injury. Byes do NOT affect the number of teams qualifying through Sectionals. At least some of the missing teams likely elected not to compete due to 4 or fewer registrants in each section. The only thing byes would affect would be the use of the fill-up rule.

As for Juniors, I'm not sure about Yao/Simon but Kopmar/Barrett train in FL and are thus out of Easterns, so unless dealing with injury, likely elected not to compete and will be at Nationals. Yao/Simon are technically out of Pacifics unless they've recently changed coaches (they're in CO with Sappenfeld) but they could have moved up to Senior nationally and then elected not to compete.

Other notes:

Livvy Shilling was 13th in Seniors at Nationals last year, not Top 5 in Juniors.

Sylvia on FSU, who tracks these things every year, has said that there is one Junior pair that elected not to compete (presumably Kopmar/Barrett) and that Yao/Simon are doing Seniors.

True but they also skated or will skate in an event that conflicts with sectionals.

I have made the other changes.

Thx for making the changes, Doris. :thank:

My understanding of your OP was that you wanted to make note of Top Fives at Nats (even for skaters who would have gotten byes for other reasons too).
That was why I thought it was worth mentioning the Nats results for Zhou, P/S, and S/B.
(Similar to your inclusion of two reasons  for Torgashev's bye: qualifying for JGPF + competing at Warsaw Cup.)

Thx again for putting so much information together into one handy-dandy resource.

Off topic for this thread ... but does anyone know whether Deardorff/Settlage will compete at Nats?

Should any of them?

Absolutely. Torgashev competed admirably at seniors last year.

And besides that, why wouldn't they... the way the Senior US Men have competed recently?

It's not out of the realm of possibility that a great performance from a hungry junior could land him on the podium.

Correct re Camden Pulkinen competing as a Junior at Nats this year.

He said so in the new IFS article with Q & As with the three U.S men going to the JGPF: Pulkinen, Torgashev, Krasnozhon.

https://www.ifsmagazine.com/u-s-junior-men-final-showdown/ (very enjoyable article by Brooklee Han)

Answering my own question with an update from my trip to Skate America:

A reliable source there told me that Deardorff/Settlage will compete as Nats (as Seniors).
