Why can't I spin anymore?

I used to have consistent scratch spins, sit spins, and camel spins, but a month ago, I completely lost all ability to spin and haven’t been able to spin since. I initially thought this was due to my broken down boots, but I have since gotten new skates, and my spinning problems persist. Everything is so uncentered that I can barely do a scratch spin, and I can no longer “whip” my leg around in a sit spin. I’m not even attempting camel spins at this point. The only spin I can do now is a backspin. Has anyone else gone through this or have advice on what I can do to get my spins back?

What boots and blades were you using before, and did you buy the same when you replaced them? Only time I've had temporary spin problems (not as extreme as yours sound) was when I changed to a different brand of boots but bought my same preferred blades. I went back to the fitter and we had to move the blades slightly on the new, different boots.

Before I was using Jackson Premieres and Legacy 7s. I switched to Edea Concertos and Coronation Aces. Not sure if its an equipment issue

I hope one of the coaches on here can suggest other possibilities (although almost everyone is watching and discussing the Olympics right now :cheer2:). I'm not a coach, just a longtime skater, and blade adjustment was the only factor I've ever had for a spin problem. Good luck!

You've had a massive change in equipment, so there will naturally be some adjustment time and practice needed. Try taking everything back to basics and work on your basic edges to really get your balance right. Move on to turns, etc. Work on two-foot spins and build up your spinning from there. If you still can't spin after some good basic sessions, then go back to your fitter and see if you need the blades moving slightly.

How long have you been in the new skates? The last time I got new skates and blades it took me about 10-15 hours on ice before my spins felt "normal" again. Like you I switched brands and blade styles and from fully broken down boots to properly supportive ones. I actually find it way easier to do a sit spin on dead boots because they are extremely flexible lol. Not to mention, if you switched to Edea from Jackson your blade is probably 1/4 to 1/2 an inch shorter. The sensation of spinning on Matrix vs. traditional blades is also quite different so there is a lot you are getting used to!

It sounds like you’re having issues finding your center. I’d step back a few steps here and try to sit atop your blade in that sweet spot and learn your new skates and where that center is. Practise positions of going into a back spin and rotate at least 3-4 revolutions before snapping into the spin . If you have a coach they can help you with that. You have had new skates and they can be quite different to adjust to.
