Besides cultural, historical and grandfather legislative reasons, can someone explain to me why there should be such thing as "freedom of religion" from a pure logical point of view. Why are religious groups so special that they are often given special treatment (e.g., tax exemption for church business and property)? Why should I as a tax payer indirectly pay for something I have no faith in? Why don't philosophical beliefs (e.g., Taoism, Confucianism, evolutionism) that are based on logic or even all beliefs receive the same protection?the original federal hate crimes laws, as part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, have always covered religion as a protected class.
