Ross Miner (Gershwin Medeley)

3A tilted, hand-down, just saved it from a fall
3F step-out (not sure what happened)
3Lz+2T+2T(arms up)
CCoSp4 nice and fast, easy
SSp4
3Lo hang on (lost all speed on landing)
Great outside spread eagle
3Lz, another one who grazes his free foot on landings
3F+2T, lost a lot of speed again, but nice in air
CiSt lots of character
3S hung on
2A+2T really low
FSSp3
Not nearly as good as the short. It was like his blade just stopped moving as soon as he landed a jump...

Keegan Messing (Gremlins) it's his birthday today

3Lz+2T gorgeous
Looks relaxed and confident
3A wide takeoff and fall
FSSp3 incredibly fast
His arms are a little stiff
3A slight 2-foot +2T
3Lo no speed into it
SSp4 again very fast, great broken leg
3F possible hand-down on landing
CiSt he is crawling across the ice -- very, very slow
HUGE Russian split jump
2A easy
3Lz slight 2-foot
3S+2T nice, but no speed into it
CCoSp4, very cool intermediary position
Spins were fantastic, jumps were ok, footwork definitely left a lot to be desired.

Juran Yang (Spartacus), not really sure what he's supposed to be wearing

3Lz very nice
1F+2T
lots of choreography
3T very nice, he has a lot of speed coming out of his jumps
2.5T, tilted, opened up way to early
CSSp4, very nice unsupported tuck sit
3S+2T his arms were very low in the air on the 2T but he pulled it off
2A fought for landing
2A+2A not even a hop in between, very nice
He doesn't sell his jumps well
SlSt great twizzles and dramatic arm movements, best footwork of the last group
FSSp4 slowed down a lot
CCoSp3 slow and travelled a bit
Overall, nice performance. The music was a little to soft for his skating style, though.

yes Keegan is reusing his LP... different costume, though.

I wonder if it has something to do with the costs that his family has encountered now that he's a junior... I know there was talk last year at nationals that they had a bit of a pricetag shock at how much more expensive it was for him to be a junior.

Well that result throws the cat among the pigeons for who's going to Jr Worlds. Will Ross get to go? They didn't even give him a JGP assignment this year. Does Keegan? He was only an alternate for the JGPF.

It will be quite a puzzle.

Frankly, I'm surprised it took them to Novice to realize how costly skating is. It's a shame though, plenty of good talent is never realized due to the cost of this sport. Being in AK doesn't help either - I can say that from personal experience.

I think it was the added travel expenses... I'm not sure. I just know that once Keegan made a splash as a novice his parents saw more and more price tags (I assume because he's becoming a front runner they're having to look elsewhere and not just here in Anchorage for choreography and the like...) add in the extra travel expenses that the JGP and nationals and possibly worlds and - as you know - the money goes quick...

I would assume they knew this going in, but still knowing and actually facing it are two different things.

USFSA pays the travel expenses for at least skater and coach for all the major internationals assignments (JGP and junior worlds included). I understand why they'd want to see him skate, but really, the only competition they have to pay for are regionals/sectionals/nationals and if he gets international assignments they only have to pay for nationals.

This was just another contest where the Men (boys) are skating better than the Ladies (girls). Changes are a-coming. I remember the Men were all about splats and the one who didn't.
