Well, things did go wrong with Irina Slutskaya. She was (a) robbed of her 2002 OGM, (b) often underachieving against Kwan at Worlds, and (c) seriously ill with vasculitis in 2004.
My sincere apologies for going off-topic, but Slutskaya was never robbed of anything. In a fairer world, her scores for artistic impression should never crack 5.3, perhaps with the exception of one or two of her most well-choreographed programs. Apart from that, her skating skills and overall refinement were so far behind Kwan's that it's a wonder she ever beat Kwan at all, even when Kwan made errors. So no, she absolutely was not robbed in 2002. I personally would have had her behind Kwan in the FS (5.7/5.4 versus 5.5/5.8).
Re: Mao - This may be selfish of me, but I was sad to hear that she won't be competing this season. We could use more Mao programs to get us through this new era, and I would have liked to see as many seasons as possible of her newfound technical brilliance before age takes its toll. She may not have made it all the way to 2018, but I could see another 2 very solid years for her and some beautiful programs; beyond that, I simply can't see her body holding up.
