I watched a lot of Torvill and Dean and was amazed how they looked exactly the same doing Bolero in 84 then 94. I wish they had changed it in 94 with new outfits like in later performances.

At this point I actually enjoyed their Paso Doble the most. Ice dance had become oh how shall we say over the top Russian by 94. I hated 98 and got caught up in all the drama again about the cheating Russian couple Pasha and her boyfriend Sasha Zhulin. I recall meeting Maia Usova with Platov when they became very popular with the crowds who detested Pasha.

It was interesting to see interviews of the wonderful Bourne and Kraatz and hearvDubova say that had the best edges. I watched interviews of Torvill and Dean on Piers Morgan. I vaguely recalled those interviews of a few years ago. I think Torvill and Dean got huge mileage out of their gold medal but they really were special. I think their dancing holds up. Always such perfection in every move.

Then of course I got curious about Isabelle Duchenays who never remarried and wonder where she is. Not much to be found. I did not like the brother sister team but by then Ice dance was becoming unrecognizable.

I guess we can thank Marina Zueva and Igor for recreating this ice dance form under CoP. My how one video leads to another and another and..... I get compulsive.

It is amazing how many ID programs/ teams I did not like. Then. And how many I find more watchable.

Where have you gone lately into skating history?

I'm guessing it was AIDS? It seemed to take many great skaters and dancers. Horrible. Watching. Him as an amateur was like watching Scott. Those80's unitards and the way he skated. I'm sure Scott imitated him.

Yes, Robert died of AIDS. Too many skaters in the 80s and 90s:sad4:

He was admired by other skaters, so yes, he had an influence, although the unitard was an 80s costume for many. And the aerial half flip at the end became known as the "Wagon Wheel", his signature move. I would love to see Wagon Wheels today. Probably not enough points.:(

Every now and then I'll look something up on YouTube and get totally involved. Several hours and bleary eyes later I am reminded at how much I miss some of the past skaters and how much more I enjoyed their programs where quad wasn't king and spins were still beautiful and not in eleventeen positions - some of which are ugly. Most recently I've watch a lot of Michelle's older programs (East of Eden and Fields of Gold among my favorites) Alexei Yagudin, G&G, Sale and Pelletier, Stephane Lambiel, Johnny Weir (say what you will about him, he was very graceful on the ice and his landings were beautiful) just to name a few. I occasionally go back and try to find Stars on Ice when it was in its heydey. Kurt Browning was masterful, creative, and extremely funny when he wanted to be. His Singing in The Rain and Brickhouse are classics - not to mention Rag-a-Din. Oh for the good ol' days.

I've been fairly obsessed with Gordeeva/Grinkov videos lately. They moved so well together and you just get a feeling of comfort and a strong sense that there is nothing else in the entire world these two were meant to do. I found their exhibition from 1994 in HD the other day.

TBH...it's hard not to tear up everytime I watch them skate but it always seems worth it. Katia is such a beautiful soul....there isn't ever going to be a PCS score that can properly reflect the moment that is created in A Celebration of Life.

John Curry (speaking of brilliant artists taken from us too early by Aids). I saw a video of his 1975 SP to Le sacre du printemps which is an incredibly difficult piece of music. Stravinsky is my favourite composer and after seeing so many botched Firebirds this is like balm to the soul. He has the most gorgeous Scheherazade and a beautiful rendition of Grieg’s Nocturne. I really appreciate seeing influences of classical ballet in figure skating and I’m not just talking about dainty arm movements, but the restraint and intensity the performer exudes.

Sometimes I rewatch the performances of Wylie and Eldridge. My favorites of both are too numerous to mention. Boitano--I never tire of his 88 Olympic programs, nor those of Dorothy Hamill in 76. Kitty and Peter's 84 Olympic Program is another, as is Tai and Randy's 79 World Champs Gold. Those are just the AMerican champs...and on a more recent note, I do revisit Meryl and Charlie's SD and Notre Dame from 2013. I think they are both keepers!
