Fun factoid I learned today. Cherry trees are not forever. For reasons no one completely understands, when an arboratum was torn up to make way for a highway in Seattle, the cherry trees there were not carefully transplanted but ripped up, bare roots and all, and planted on the Quad at the University of Washington. And they lived! But Cherry trees are not for ever...they die. So the people of Japan send new ones to the UW, where Japanese students have attended since 1896.
