Damaged toepick from bad sharpening?

Just had my blades sharpened by my local skate tech. Never had any major issues, although he predominantly specialises in ice hockey, he supposedly caters to figure too. I know a lot of coaches and skaters at my rink go to him. I’ve been to him twice before, always been fine.

Had them sharpened this morning and the toe-picks on my both of my blades looks chipped, like he’s sharpened the bottom toe-pick.

Will this cause me any major issues? I have a lesson with my coach today and I’m worried about it.

I’m getting new boots and blades in a couple weeks, but stuck with these for a while.

Ask your coach. But at the end of the day, you will only know by skating on them.
Just skated on them and can confirm he’s butchered them. Chatted to a coach at the rink and he told me that they were definitely sharpened wrong and they messed them up. The toepicks are chipped. Found out he also sharpens, mounts, and fits skates/blades and he’s very reliable at my rink. He told me I can go to him from now on, so I will be doing so.

Luckily, I’m getting new blades in two weeks, and then I won’t be going to the skate tech anymore, so will be going to this other guy whenever I need them sharpening.

I know! Thank goodness. Just a shame about my blades right now, they’re really messed up. :(
Yep, one bad sharpening can destroy a pair of blades. In the future, you might want to take photos of your blades each time prior to bringing them to the tech. For each blade, an overall blade shot, closeup of picks, closeup of spin rocker.

I will do, that’s a great idea! Thank you!

If a tech does end up destroying a blade because of bad sharpening, what recourse is there?

If the tech is an otherwise decent tech and has an off day, I would expect them to replace the blades if the blades are new or nearly new or to provide a discount if the blades have been used but still would have had reasonable service life left.

A couple of years ago, I had a pair of blades that had only been sharpened twice, by the guy who had sold them to me originally. On the third sharpening, he had a lot of problems. Later it turned out the sharpening jig wasn't functioning properly. Anyway, he ended up flattening both spin rockers. He replaced the blades.

Another skater on this forum bought new blades. The heels looked rounded, and she sent me photos for advice. I told her they shouldn't be that rounded, and she should bring it to the attention of the shop. It wasn't clear whether the heels were messed up at the factory or by the tech who sharpened them at the shop where she had bought them. Regardless, the shop did the right thing, and replaced the blades.

But if the tech is otherwise a screwup, they won't do anything; and you will eat the loss, unfortunately.

Pretty certain that OP skates in Sheffield if I recall and had them done by Ice locker which means in my experience they will absolutely not admit they are at fault and will try half assed to fix it.

The description sounds like one of the guys from ice locker, always did hockey but talks about how he has years experience working with figure skates predominantly.

The OP has since purchased new boots and blades from a different shop, and is using the services of a different sharpener.
