Yeah. I'm not sure if Singaporeans know who Michelle is. I haven't seen any promotions on this here also.

Yes, I live in Singapore, coached at the rink here and got a comment from one of the ladies who works there "Who is Michelle Kwan?" (no, this lady is not a skater...)

Could the December date be an error, and the rink opening set for January, when Michelle will be there for other things? Or, doesn't Michelle still have a few relatives in China that she might visit during the month between Singapore appearances?

Round trip air fare, Detroit to Singapore, $945.

Hotel, two nights in the Orchid Suite, $1065 (includes tickets to either the Lion King or Riverdance). Or you can slum it for $765 for the Club Room, instead.

Michelle Kwan: FREE! All you have to do is sign up for your free Advantage Card. With this card you can earn free points by gambling away a certain amount of money in the casino.
you should have written Meeting Michelle Kwan : Priceless! and send the ad to MasterCard.:)

Well, I'm excited, going to drop by to see if I can get a look at the performance. I called up the marina bay sands and they said that there are free viewing areas that you can stand and look from without entering the rink area. Is anyone flying over for this?

I just came back from the Marina Bay Sands rink.

There is no viewing areas really, and the food-court is on the basement with tables right next to the rink. I think they are putting VIP seating on the higher floors overlooking the rink (the shops on that side are not in operation yet, so they can close the section off). However, I wonder if they will take the black curtains down on the day itself ~ if they do, tidesong go camp out there!

The rink opening is this weekend, definitely December. The January events are not related to this. And I'm not sure what she's doing between Dec and Jan, I'd be certain to ask her if I do get to meet her!

Did you get a chance to try out the ice?
No, I didn't have my skates with me, and even if I did, I'm not sure if I'd chance killing my blades... Some of our skaters were complaining that after one session, their blades feel blunt.

When I first heard this news I thought it must have something to do with Michelle's Public Envoy duties, which has basically been on hold during the current administration.
The whole scenario seems strange to me. Michelle flying half way across the world to open an ice rink. Also I have not read any other press on this trip at all. Just saying....

Yeah, I had the same reaction. Then I thought perhaps she had a financial investment in the rink but that doesn't seem to be the case. Kinda odd...she doesn't need the money and while we all know her to be a great ambassador for the sport, it seems like she's pared down these kinds of events since she began grad school...but then this comes up. Odd. Either way, I hope she enjoys herself. Maybe it's a mini-vacation for her?

Well, I had an awesome time today. My friends told me that we could still sign up for membership on the spot so I did and got a ticket that let me in the first floor viewing area. It was so exciting to watch michelle from so close. She skated to winter song. It was a pity the rink was fake ice she didn't do any jumps.

Great to have a direct report. You just answered a question I had: how could anyone possibly do jumps on plastic ice. Answer: no way! I still envy you for getting to see Michelle right there in front of you.

As for why she took on this gig, maybe she wanted to help popularize skating in a new place. After all, Singapore has a vibrant economy. If they have enough fuel and water available, there's no reason they can't have indoor ice rinks--who needs a real winter? They're a potential audience for skating, and it would be a feather in Michelle's cap if she were instrumental in opening the gates there. Just a thought.

Some of our own skaters also performed. They did jumps up to single axel. I suppose after that the feel is too different for the time spent practising on it. Singapore does already have (and have had for years) real indoor ice skating rink(s).
If you are interested to see there are already two videos on youtube uploaded by two different pple (diff angles too) from this afternoon's skating. Just search for michelle kwan and sort by date.

Thanks for the report. I just watched one of the videos on youtube of Michelle. Great to see the Kween skating, albeit a very modified version of Winter Song. I tried to link the video
but was unsuccessful.

Vibrant indeed! Singapore has one of the highest per capita incomes of any country in the world (way ahead of the United States, for instance) and its government-assisted capitalism seems to be immune from economic downturns that afflict other economies.

Tourism is a major industry. The entrepreneurs behind this venture represent some serious money. I bet they made Michelle a financial offer that she couldn't refuse. A world-famous (if not so famous in Singapore iitself) ethnic Chinese skating star with appeal to American travelers -- I would be very surprised if the deal did not include the right to Michelle's name and image for more general promotional use.

Well, if her guy wants his privacy, I say let him have it. I like that she didn't give his name away like that, I don't think he would have appreciated that.
