When Elvis Stojko gutted out a silver medal at the 1998 Olympics despite a serious groin injury and the flu, he received praise like this:

It all comes down to the result. Compete with an injury and win first place, you're a hero. Compete with an injury and get second. you're gutsy. Compete with an injury and finish last, you're fair game for all the second guessers.
In fairness, an injured Stojko was far better than anyone else Canada could have replaced him with. In addition, Stojko was delivering the content in practice. Rachel OTOH cannot even do a layback. There aren't a lot of GP spots to go around, and especially for SA which gets network broadcasting, so I think you'd at least like to showcase your best athletes at their very best.
