That's some weird stuff happening with Tarusina. She regained her jumps, is very fast and fit, but lost her... artistry?
She had always been aggresive and feisty performer, but there was always some nice flow and well-placed choreo accents alongside - now it looks like series of disconnected gestures and figures. Is the program simply not laboured enough or the long break somehow hurt her performance skills?

Yep, it was news to me too that he is skating with Vlada Solovieva now.

I wonder why he can't find a better partner. I checked out Vlada Solovieva's results, and they have been pretty bad. Her best is 132 last season, and the season before that 119. Vlasenko was having pretty decent results while in juniors, scoring in 140s and 150s and with a good partner he could turn into a decent senior within a few years, but with a partner like that, I am not sure ...

Sochi qualification competition has completed. The following skaters qualified to novice nationals:
younger boys:
1. Maksim Belyavsliy
2. Ruslan Nazarov
3. Alexander Golyanovskiy
4. Ivan Makiev
5. Alexander Melnikov
6. Kirill Malushkin
elder boys:
1. Timofey Sergienko
2. Arseniy Dimitriev
3. Nikolay Loginov
4. Emil Gasanov
5. Nikita Kokomov
6. Ilya Pylnev
younger girls:
1. Daria Loboda
2. Alina Gorbacheva
3. Kristina Shakirova
4. Alina Bogosian
elder girls:
1. Alisa Skrynnikova
2. Anastasia Golubeva
3. Varvara Kisel
4. Anastasia Karpova

Daria Loboda is, probably, the strongest skater here and the only one who has chances to medal at novice nationals. She had a very strong free skate with 7 triples and only one under-rotation call. Her elements were: 3Lz+3T, 2A+3T, 3Lz, 3Lo<, 3F, 3S, level 2 step sequence, level 4 spins.

St. Petersburg qualification is still going on.

Moscow qualification starts on February 6. Preliminary schedule can be found here: http://ffkm.ru/images/files/017-18/2018-02-06_PMMV/Pre_Timetable_PMMV_2018.pdf

For the St. Petersburgh qualifiers, 10-year-old Maria Dmitrieva had 7 more or less clean backloaded triples. Probably the biggest talent from there in a good while.

For the Moscow entries, it's insane how much stronger younger girls look than the elder girls. For elder girls, there's Kanysheva who's not even that big a talent and then maybe someone like Kamila Valieva.

For younger girls on the other hand, there's the 2007-born trio of Sofia Akatieva, Elizaveta Berestovskaya and Sofia Samodelkina who all are massive talents. And some interesting 2009-borns like Ksenia Melkumova.

It's really the weirdest thing, this 2005-06 hole in talent. I wonder, if it can be explained historically.

It's really the weirdest thing, this 2005-06 hole in talent. I wonder, if it can be explained historically.
Firstly, don’t forget that Russian novice and junior nationals are based on calendar year, not on ISU year. That means that even though there may be a calendar year that is weaker, it wouldn’t reflect the same way during skating year because within each season there are newly eligible skaters born in two different years July-December of one year and Janury-June the following year.
Secondly, if you think of junior eligibility, if skaters start competing as soon as they are junior eligible, they have to be in juniors at least two years before they become junior eligible, which means that they are competing skaters of at least three different calendar years. And that’s if the skaters were moving to seniors as soon as they become senior eligible, which they are not. That means that any one year gap of weaker skaters can’t affect the results of any country.

In the past there was a weak year. It was the season when Kolomiec was becoming junior eligible. She was the strongest skater of her year, and at the end she didn’t even compete that season because she was injured. (And when she returned after about a year she became quite a weak skater). But it was the year after Medvedeva, Proklova, Sotskova and Sakhanovich became junior eligible and they still had to stay in juniors, so it worked alright.

Every time when there is a gap in talent (weaker year), the Russian federation filled it with B skaters like Stavitskaya, Titushkina and Gerasimova. No harm done. And later when there were available spots, it was filled with more B skaters - Yushenko, Kayumova, Pervushkina. And later Mitrofanova and Mikhailova.
