You are so lucky if you are going to this event. Three of the finest entertainers in men's skating are going to be performing here. No, I'm not talking about Chan, Lysacek and Voronov, who will likely be dividing the medals among them. I'm talking about Ryan Bradley, Shawn Sawyer, and Yannick Ponsero! Note I said entertainers, not skaters. Please check out the exhibition skates of these three performers and you'll see what I'm getting at.

Now Chan has lovely, lovely skating, but I'd rather watch Ryan (and I had a chance last summer to see both of them at Liberty).

In any case, it should be exciting and fun. I'm looking foward to it, if only, only, only I can get icenetwork to work in the middle of the day (otherwise, I'll have to wait until the replays are available)

I'm stocking up on the little stuffed animals to throw for Ryan, Shawn and Yannick. If you're going, could you throw them each one for me?

1 Patrick CHAN CAN 1

While Patrick has lovely, lovely edges and smooth basic skating, he was definitely struggling at Liberty this summer. I'm assuming he will have things straightened out by now, but penalties are bigger for trying and missing quads and triple axels. This could work against him, even with the home country fans and audience pulling for him (which is a help for any skater).

2 Shawn SAWYER CAN 1
Shawn just scored a personal best inthe LP at Skate America, which also gave him his best ever total score at an event.

He just needs a bit more height in his jumps! (and a shorter toe on his free leg skate so he can avoid some of those 2 footed landings :( (Great creativity and musicality, and greatflexibility in everything he does. David Wilson is his choreographer, and other than the jumps, Shawn gives him everything a choreographer could want to display his creations. Shawn's the Canadian male version of Alissa Czisny, and I just wish Brian Boitano & Linda Leaver would take him under their wings as they did Alissa. Shawn was the little kid in the 1997 Goodbye Tribute to Toller Cranston. Shawn skates in parts 1 and 3. I only have part 4 :(

3 Jeremy TEN CAN 1

I don't know a great deal about Jeremy Ten. He seems to have gotten this spot due to Buttle's retirement, and to his performance in summer skating competitions. Jeremy won the Sr. Men's SP with a score of 73.01 at the BC Summer Skate over Kevin Reynolds and Vaughn Chipeur. He finished second in the LP to Chipeur. Jeremy does have a triple axel and a 3Lz3t combination. And there is one video on youtube, which is linked under videos. He finished 6th at Nebelhorn, too.

4 Yannick PONSERO FRA 2
Yannick is here fresh from winning the Coupe International de Nice and from finishing 3rd in the Masters de Patinage competition.
I hope he performs in the exhibition, because he has had some really crazy ones. Please check out the one below I've named Sea and Ski. It's a total hoot. I wish that US Figure Skating was as forgiving of its crazier skater as the French federation appears to be! They have both Ponsero and Preaubert producing humorous, memorable programs.

10 Ryan BRADLEY USA 7
Ryan finished last season thinking he wanted to retire. Too many injuries had taken a toll on his skating. However after he thought it over, he decided to keep going. At Liberty, he landed the finest 4t3t I've seen a man land so far this season in his SP. And he landed his 3A in his LP in the midst of a melted rink.

Height 5'11"-that's one of Ryan's problems. It's not easy to do fast, fast footwork with those long legs. And it's harder to keep jumps on axis. It's too bad Ryan can't skate for France, because his entertaining style would likely be far more appreciated by the French Federation than US figure skating. He is one heck of a performer, and even when he's struggling (as in the LP below from Liberty 2008), the audience is style likely to be hugely behind him. Don't miss his videos below, particularly the clown at the birthday party exhibition. I get the feeling Ryan sets his exhibtions first and then civilizes and waters them down to make them competition compliant. Anyway, GOOOO RYAN!

Do notice his style, his lovely camel spin (those long legs), and if you and he are lucky, a great 4t3t.

"A lackluster 2007-08 season hampered by inconsistent performances and nagging knee injuries opened the door to retirement for Bradley, the Broadmoor Skating Club's most decorated active member.

Bradley took fifth at the U.S. Championships following a fifth- place finish at Trophee Eric Bompard and a sixth-place showing at Skate America. And his surgically repaired knees continued to give him trouble.

"It was hard for me at the end of last season," Bradley said. "I was so tired, and I was on the road so much. It was really wearing on me."

The prospect of revamped programs lit a fire in Bradley as his coaches, Tom Zakrajsek and Becky Calvin, attempted to persuade him not to call it quits.

They worked together to develop what Bradley termed "lighter" routines aimed at pleasing the audience. To keep the technical elements at a high standard, they incorporated a quad toe loop, a jump with four rotations.

"You have to be competitive, but we want something the crowd can enjoy," Bradley said. "My favorite part of competing is entertaining the crowd and getting that roar. We're ending the programs to bring out my character a little bit more."

11 Evan LYSACEK USA 7
Evan is appearing here fresh from the shock of placing third at Skate America. I wonder whether he is going to try the quad here again, as it was what did him in the long at Skate America. Tarasova seems to have put him in a supremelyugly set of costumes and his style/choreo does not seem markedly different. I wonder whether he thinks the investment in a Tarasova program was worthe the cost? Perhaps he should have gone to David Wilson?

Doris, you're amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time.

I just want to add a link for the Ponsero "Sea & Ski" EX - this is from the TV broadcast rather than a hand-held camera, and the picture quality is better. I wish I could have gone to SSG, it seems like a lot of fun.

Thanks Doris,

Jeremy Ten was picked by Skate Canada after Nebelhorn skate-off against Joey Russell. Jeremy Ten is a tad bit stronger jumper than Joey Russell, but was plagued by growth spurt and inconsistency in jumps last season.

Jeremy's coach is the controversial Joan McLeod, who also coached Sandhu and Mira. Having said that, Jeremy has the best flow of all Joan's students since Sandhu.

Jeremy's breakout competition was 2007 Nationals where he won the junior title.

Given the field, Evan should and needs to win this (to be secure for Finals).

Patrick can win this but will he blow it?

Shawn just maybe win it.

Sergei has a beautiful quad, at least it was in Gotenborg., looking to see if he has improved his PCSs?

My choice of skater is Yannik Ponsero but unfortunately not consistent.

There, you have my Top 5 in no particular order.

Shawn just maybe win it.

Shawn is by far my favourite skater at SC and I'm madly in love with his "Amadeus" LP , but the most threatening clean jump he has in his arsenal is a measly 3-flip. After all these years, he STILL 2-foots/UR his 3-Axel and 2-foots his 3-lutz. (I find his situation to be sad :frown:, frustrating :banging: and laughable :p).

That being said, I'm VERY impressed that despite these weaknesses he finished 5th at SA with a score that was only a few points behind quad-machine Kevin Reynolds AND he beat Lysacek on the LP TES. I say the best he can possibly do at SC is nab a bronze---and you can imagine that would be a poorly skated men's competition!
