I am feeling guilty at the lack of love I have shown the pairs events this season. They are always the preview I post last. However, the Zhangs SP at Cup of China has changed that! If the Zhangs can put out a gorgeous program under COP, the other teams (and not just Savchenko & Szolkowy) can do it too. In any case, I'm sure S&S want to put out two clean programs here, since there Skate America programs were not their very best. And the Zhangs are looking in prime shape. The year before Olympics is not the time to lose focus.

Because we've seen so many of these pairs before, I've added flight plans and their best executed element from both their short and long programs.

Really the things I do for you all. :)

Anyway, I recommend the following.

Make a cup of coffee. Sweeten it and lighten it to your taste. Add a dash of cinnamon and a squirt of whipped cream, and get ready to watch the pairs perform at TEBC. You have the Worlds Champions here and the pair that beat them in the SP just a few weeks ago. You have the first team ever to land a quad salchow.

If you're not excited, you should be.:clap:

1 Meagan DUHAMEL / Craig BUNTIN CAN 1

This very strong team landed 4 triples total in their programs at Skate America. They do both the triple salchow and the triple toe. Their throw is the triple lutz, and it's a beauty. Megan is a very strong jumper and has competed in singles. Craig, if you will recall, was Canadian pairs champion with Valerie Marcoux, before her retirement. So although they are a relatively new pair, they're making quite a splash.

2 Huibo DONG / Yiming WU CHN 2

This is a young Chinese pair. They were third at Jr. Worlds last year. They struggled at Skate Canada, for example. However, they did a very nice job at the Chinese team competition in the spring. When a pair is young, they have so many adjustments to body changes in both of the partners. I wouldn't be surprised if they got things back together here.

6 Aliona SAVCHENKO / Robin SZOLKOWY GER 4

What is there to say? They are the World Champions, and the automatic favorites in any competition they enter. However, defending titles is sometimes not quite as easy as winning them. Their Skate America performance was not there very best. And I can't say that Lost in Space is a very inspiring idea for a pairs program. Indeed when you're spinning in space, it's very easy to get disoriented, and then it's time for, "Danger, Will Robinson." It can't be that easy training along side Aliona's ex-partner Morosov of Volosozhar & Morosov this year. I hope Ingo asked S&S whether he could take on V&M.

In any case, they're very special skaters. Put your hands together and welcome them warmly:

7 Maria MUKHORTOVA / Maxim TRANKOV RUS 5

They may have tanked a bit in the LP at Skate America, but they surely put on a great show in the SP. They are in a stressful battle for the position of the top ranked Russian pair. It's no secret. The top ranked Russian pair usually wins the Olympics. Being the second ranked Russian pair is not as good a gig, even when the two teams are very close in skills. Kawaguchi & Smirnov won Skate Canada. M&T would surely like to win here, just to keep things even.

Doris, as always I am in awe of your research skills!

So, two Toscas . I have decided to automativally turn against any team or skater so long as they are using it. But at least there's a Goodbye Lenin in there! I've seen plenty of Amelies but for some reason Goodbye Lenin (same composer) just didn't seem to be getting any love.

Certainly in a show skating spectacle but for a competition I wouldn't mind sitting through 8 Toscas for comparison sake. I'm big on how important music is, and it could turn around the judging completely, imo.

Meantime I'm enthusiastic about seeing Mukhortova and Trankov. That kind of Pairs skating hasn't been seen since B&S.

Oh, I agree about the importance of music and how it affects judging. And I think I could sit through 8 programs set to the same music - just not Tosca.

I thought Buntin rather outshined Duhamel at SA, he seemed more polished than she. But I hope they skate well in Paris.

S/S and the Lost in Space program did nothing for me at SA, but as you said, they are the favorites.

It will be interesting to see how Mukhortova and Trankov fare. Is this the Russian team that bickers and fights alot?

French skater Coia has an interesting look on the ice.

There are quite a few Chinese pairs that show great promise, seems they will continue to be a powerhouse.

Would love to see Vise and Trent land that 4 sal.
