The Four Minute Mile

The first man to ever break the four minute mile was Sir Roger Bannister of England - in May of 1954. His fiercest competitor was John Landry of Australia. In fact, Bannister defeated Landry right here in Vancouver BC at the British Empire Games in August of 1954 (5 months before I was born!). There is a famous statue of Bannister and Landry in front of Empire Stadium (where the race was held). Landry looked back over his shoulder briefly and Bannister passed him a few paces from the finish line!
