Axel Paulsen (18 July 1855 – 9 February 1938) of Norway, who was both a speed skater and figure skater, invented and first publicly landed the Axel jump in 1882 at the World Championships in Vienna (while wearing speed skates). He was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1976.
