State of the U.S. Men's Figure Skating for 2014-15

Yes, I hope this might be Stephen's year to shine again and get on the world team. I wish he would change part of his lp music though.

Congratulations to Dornbush for his bronze at Cup of China. :)

BTW ... don't know if the following comment from @nathanwchen (from a few weeks ago) has been noted elsewhere:

Q: It is so sad that you done only 1 JGP and can't go to the final. Do you plan to go to JGP next year or will try to skate as a senior?

A: I'm sad too:( I'm not quite sure yet, but we'll see!

Went back and watched Stephen's LP again. I really think he could be the dark horse this year at Nats if he can put 2 good programs together. He really is nice to watch and he's got it all.

I loved watching Stephen skating. He has a nice, calm quality to him. Unfortunately, his jumps are a bit wild so it's a little tense watching him. But hopefully he can make a splash at Nats and the 4th (almost 3rd) at SA gives him confidence.

^it was Skate Canada, not Skate America. :)

Anyway, my contribution to the US men after CoC:

Way to go Richard Dorbush (does he have a nick name?) I just watched his Free Skate on recap TV. A bit more stamina and he is among the US guys fighting for medals at nationals. I really liked both his long and short program. Great performances!

Actually I can't think of any US guy I don't enjoy. For now I judge them being on the same level with different strengths and weaknesses. Except for really wanting Jeremy on the world team I welcome any of them. I still don't see a US man on the wold podium this season, but I hope they are challenging each other - and maybe at least one of them will get it all together when it counts the most

I think Richard can go for Nationals title, if he will jsut hold his head together. He started very good at COC LP, but then he messed jumps in 2nd half a bit

The only thing as him I would be worried that there will be very big push this year for Jason to win Nationals

Great skate for Max today! Sucks about Brown and Carriere though. Brown has got to start getting that quad in there... His skating is phenomenal but without the jumps he is barely second tier. Whoever said Brown is good enough without the quad needs to take a look at that SP.

The strategy didn't work today, but I also don't agree with getting the quad so he could mess up on it. He is still within striking distance of the podium.

Let's keep in mind that Jason is less than a point away from Max. He still has the long program. Let's hope all three of our US boys can skate a great long program.

Does anyone else feel like Max got kind of...hosed...today? Or am I being an irrational uber?

I'm just getting rather frustrated that he's now light years ahead of where he was in Salt Lake City, yet the scores are going down. :confused2:

Also, Most Important Thing To Come Out Of The SP: Max is smiling again. When they zoomed in on his face before he started, you can see it starting; then he's grinning before the end. My heart is light again - now he is looking more like the skater I first adored.

But he still has Hair Problems.

I haven't seen Max's skate yet but I wouldn't be surprised if he lost a big chunk of support from the USFSA. Chances are he was dumped for Jason, the new golden boy. You can tell because the NBC coverage pretty much always focuses on him and they pretty much follow the storylines the fed. gives them. USFSA seem incapable of supporting multiple skaters at once, they give all their attention to one and pay the others close to dust :bang:. It's the same with the ladies where its all Gracie Gracie Gracie Gracie :scowl:

Max has improved a lot and I'm enjoying watching him this season. I hope he continues to improve

USFSA support has nothing to do with how people are scored. Okay, maybe nothing is not quite correct, but I don't see why judges at ROSTELECOM CUP would care about who the USFSA is pushing.

Max's TES scores this season has been 40-41 so far this season. That is quite low for someone who has a quad.

HIs BV was 38.95, which is actually 7th lowest in the field.

Max's +GOE was also quite low. Just 1.65 points. He received NO +GOE on a spin and his 3A. Even with a relatively poor performance, Jason still edged Max out on +GOE (1.85 points).

Voronov received level 4s on all his spins (plus level 3 on step, which Max go), which gave him a BV of 42.36, 3.41 points higher than Max. On top of that he had a really good +gOE, 7.72 points to be precise, to give him the 50 TES.

And it's worth noting Misha Ge, had just slightly less BV (38.03) due to getting level 4 on ALL his non-jump elements (including the step sequence) and better +GOE ( 4.52 points), which is why he is ahead of Max despite not doing a quad.

And yes, the PCS is low too. But he's not exactly killing it on the TES either. AT least not so far.

Just watched Max  it's improved tremendously from last time. I think it's the choreo, especially in the middle part that's doing him disservice: it needs to have more in it; whereas Jason's SP (CoR performance I haven't watched yet) there's too much going on (though he'll have mastered it by Nats probably).

:agree: Agree about The Most Important Thing To Come Out Of The SP. I too was very happy to see Max smiling from the very beginning. I can understand why his intensity often is written on his face, but his smile is a terrific asset.

As for the better skate/lower score phenomenon, I don't know what to say except that I hope that his FS tomorrow will turn it around. :yay:

... But he still has Hair Problems.

Seems that Max is in a damned-if-he-does and damned-if-he-doesn't situation.

Something I don't understand about why his curls at SLC this year and at Skate Canada got some thumbs down:
IIRC, Adam Rippon's curls back in the day were not so different from Max's. And I thought that everyone loved Adam's curls, and that many were upset when he left them behind.

To me, Max's curls have an inherent "aura" ;) of energy. Their positive vibe is esp. welcome when he is looking intense and not smiling.
His hair in 2012-13 suited Tron and West Side Story, but it was rather "safe." The changes last season and this season have been fine by me -- and I like that in both cases, they show more personality.

I don't understand why Max continues to do the quad in combination; he invariably turns the triple toe into a double. Is the problem that he can't do preceeding steps into a quad jump, or is he just being stubborn about going for a 4/3? Surely, the 3lz3t would be quite easy for him.

I sometimes wonder if he has ever really looked at the math of it. You are certainly right. The quad double is just not worth it over a 3z3t. Maybe he has issues with the second jump of combos and would rather do a 4/2 than a 3/2. That is about the only reason I can think of for him to keep doing this. It is hurting him point wise.
