State of US Ladies in skating III: 2014-15 Season

Seems to me they'll probably leave it up to her and Brian. Surely they'd like to be represented in the Korea Olympics in ladies? In which case she might as well go to seniors ASAP.

She doesn't have to move up to the GP in the fall to prepare for that. She'd be better off honing her skating skills in juniors, at least in the JGP. She can still do Senior Bs too, and she is eligible to do both JW and Senior Worlds 2016, which is what Denis Ten has done, and then move up to the GP in the fall of 2016.

If she is intending to compete at the Sr. worlds next year, it would be no surprise if she wanted to do Sr. grand prix, rather than jr.

Elizabet would be guaranteed only 1 GP event since she is low on the WR list, and she would likely finish off the podium in the GP as she'd be competing against much older skaters. OTOH, she'd be a shoo-in for the JGPF and would probably win a medal at the final. That would set her up much better for the 2016-2017 GP season and she'd have a better chance of holding her own against older skaters.

It's up to her and her coach. We'll have to wait and see.

If she does move up, it would be to the benefit of the US, since KAZ would have more JGP slots they'd be unable to fill.

I just happened to see Karen Chen's Junior Worlds SP, thinking she'd probably have gotten into a podium at the very least. How wrong was I.

Anyways, can someone please explain to me why she got Level 2 on layback for SP? She seems to have better Layback combination than Evgenia, yet the latter got level 4 while the former got level 2?

I get what you guys mean now. I just saw Evgenia's SP, and I'm left confused how that lutz got through like it did in judges' sights. Which in the end made me question the score of high 60s that she got.

Quite ambiguous judging I must say. :slink:

Yeah, the judges were really shady when it came to the edge calls at junior worlds this year, especially for the Russian girls. Both of them deserved edge calls on their lutzes but did not get them. Eteri really needs to work with both Medvedeva and Sakhanovich on their lutzes. Both have really bad technique on that jump that will not make it past the senior callers next year.

okay back to the state of us skating. It seems like we are waiting for one lady to dominate consistently like Kwan and that hasn't happened = yet. I think there could be even two ladies win world medals but at the same time it is possible the americans could have no lady in the top five- unlikely perhaps but all are capable of medalling and all are capable of being outside of the top ten. There is not the confidence you have like in Yuna Kim who no matter what always would be top ten. Can't say that with the Americans. One could imagine Ashley with a bad skate could be outside top ten.

I could imagine Ashley with a bad skate, even though she's been arguably skating better than ever. But Wagner's been getting PCS near the best, and that will keep her in the top 5 or 6 even with a bad skate.

Agreed, and if by chance the stars align, I could see her pulling down a major score and possibly winning in an upset. Technically, she's competitive with the Russians (assuming those 3-3s are around and her lutz isn't an issue) and she can outscore both in PCS, especially if she delivers that FS as effectively as she did at nationals. Ashley has the potential to win it all but, as always when it comes to potential, she'll have to deliver.

I do think given the way she's been skating all season that unless she implodes a la Gracie at 4CC, Ashley is a solid top 4 bet.

Interesting when you mention that they are both Eteri Tut proteges. As far as I remember, even Yulia Lip had rather unsteady edges, sometimes the 3Lz, sometimes it was the 3F. And it also appears that they all have scary axel jumps. I do think that Eteri is a good mentor to them and she does a really good job of putting together a nice programme package but the technical aspects such leaves a lot to be desired. Sakhanovich's technique IMO looks like it won't survive past puberty. Like Yulia Lip, all the technical weaknesses are starting to show up. They seriously need to develop the solid techniques and basics of Liza Tuks and Wakaba Higuchi.

And you didn't watch the LPs by any chance? Both Medvedeva and Sakhanovich got e on their lutzes (and also at least !'s in the SP, which are also calls, btw). In contrast, Higuchi got away without any call on a 3F in the LP that was definitely a !. Yes, we all know the russian girls are favored sometimes (and they're hardly the only ones, actually), but there's no need to reverte back to the old 'the evil russians'-shtick when actually they weren't favored over others.

I agree Ashley can win gold, but that is because we are not in a golden era of skating for ladies. When Russia can send two ladies who weren't even on the radar for their National team last year who are contenders that says a lot. I do hope the judging is more open than saying a bad skate by Ashley will get her fourth when you compare it to last year's 4th place finisher who had two good skates. Ashley is getting the pcs but she is no Kwan, she is no Kim and she is no Asada or even Kostner. Still the judges might just accept her as the pc queen right now although Korpi is back in the picture.

Dare I say, Gold is in the picture too, if she overcomes her demons.

Thing about Wagner is that her SP is still her weakest link. Yet another 62 point effort from her just isn't going to be enough, even with a solid FS. Got to put yourself in position first.

I think 4th is most likely, followed by 3rd, 5th or lower, and finally, top 2.

ETA: it's totally dependent on what the Russians do (or don't do, for that matter). If they open the door, anything is possible but that door has been shut all season long...

I was about to say this.

Kwanatic, I know from past posts (and your blog :)) that you're quite fair and have complimented many of the Russian girls. But in this case, I completely disagree about the edge calls being fishy at Junior Worlds. In fact, if anything was fishy, it was how harsh the LP caller was for Evgenia/Serafima compared to Wakaba. (We can debate the PCS, and I have a few questions on the GOE myself, but the tech caller was not favouring the Russians).

You don't need to say this again. No one in the past several posts said she's not.
