Switzerland arrest high ranking FIFA officials over corruption charge

Colombia backed out many years ago just 3 years before the World Cup and they pulled it off in Mexico, We've still got 7 and there are countries with the infrastructure to hold a World Cup, USA is the biggest one, England could probably pull it off too, these 2 countries will not need to build more stadiums if they can plan it out properly, other big soccer nations such as Germany or Spain could probably do it too since their leagues are on break during the summer, France is hosting Euro 2016, they are also a possibility for a large scale soccer event without building a handful of new stadiums

. . . so we have five years before FIFA will think it is a problem is what you are saying?

I think a boycott of the next two world cups is in order.

There's no call to hold such an event in a country that's invading its neighbors or in a cesspit that approves of slavery.

Some things are more important than sports.

No I'm saying it's possible to take the World Cup away from Qatar and put it elsewhere with the time that is left

and of course Septic Bladder would get re-elected, FIFA is corrupted to the very core, there's too much money going around, I always felt like it's been taken too far and it's too deep at this point, everyone has accepted favours for stuff

In the FIFA election the vote from Germany equals that of Burkina Faso. It's called democracy. Apparently Blatter suits small countries better than a prince from Jordan. The West favors the prince and has nothing against Jordan. But some time ago the same was true with Saddam when he fought with Iran. Something changed then at the expense of how many lives? Yes, the invasion was not into the neighboring country. So what? What happens if Jordan falls out of favor - it's easy in the Middle East?

FIFA performs its main duty - the mundial in Germany was gorgeous. Problems? Some bribes here and there? The courts are working. There were bribes from the USA to get SLC - it's known. Weren't there bribes from Beijing and London? No one knows but now no one wants the Olympics any longer in the first place.

I am all for making the sport fair and clear. But I am against substituting fairness with politics. The prince of Jordan backed by the West IMHO is politics. Glad it did not play.

I don't really follow the sport, but I agree with your assessment here.

He suits them better because many of them are getting large sums of cash from him, much of which looks like it is not going where it was meant. See this article The status quo is enriching these people. Do you really want to celebrate that rather than applauding a search for viable alternatives?

I wish we had nice world cups first of all. There was some questionable judging in Germany like in Russia vs. Algeria when our goalkeeper was blinded by laser and the referi did not care. But all in all no one can have a strong argument that wrong teams got to Germany and the wrong team won. So in principle the FIFA system works under Blatter. As for corruption during the selection process, no one cared to such extent when "the right countries" won. It's yet another showup of hypocrisy and double standards. The West tolerates some middle ages regimes like Saudi Arabia where women who get in the taxi with men are stoned to death and does not tolerate others. For me a Jordan prince is not a viable alternative to Blatter - just a sheer politics.

The changes should come in limiting the number of times as the president, the maximum age, and the process. It should start now immediately after the elections - not like a bunch of arrests right before the new elections to push the needed candidate. Once again, were mundials under Blatter nice and fair? Yes. Then what's all this fuzz about boycott really about?

I have no problem with Russia hosting a World Cup. They did a nice job with the Olympics, but when FIFA picked Qatar, that was when the officials sacrificed the safety of the players, the spectators, and a huge number of lives of Qatar slaves to pick up ever bigger bribes, the corruption has gone too far.

The country hadn't actually invaded a peaceful neighbor then... Well actually they had started the invasion but nice people don't mention that in polite company.

You'd like to start a discussion about "a peacefull neighbor" shelling residential districts after which hundreds of women and children die, about "a Russian invasion" in Crimea when not a single shot was fired and not a single person died and so on and so forth? You'd like to discuss what "democracy" brought to Libia, Iraq, and Afganistan? It's possible in a separate thread in "Politics" if the administration allows it in the FS board. But I hope it won't. No one will change her/his opinion - will be just more hate professing. I guess, ongoing attacks and critique of any Russian skater from certain users is already enough.

So Blatter resigns, not immediately but in 6 - 9 months. I think this is the best solution for everyone. During the period he can try to push reforms - he has nothing to lose now.

The president of the French federation voted Blatter Friday. Today, after the resignation, he said that it is not worse and Platini is an ideal candidate. Weathercock
To change the President is a beginnings but we must look in the nationales federations. All the system have problems

Platini also voted for Qatar, he needs to go too, he's not a step up from Blatter, Blatter purposely went through with the election to prove that he still has a lot of support and then is resigning to give himself time to insert someone else who shares his ideals as his replacement
