TEB is Cancelled

Yes if they're doing it out of protocol, There was no indication to this, Just a safety claim,

Any other country does not do this and hasn't in the past

All major sporting events were cancelled in the U.S. for about a week after 9/11. Major League Baseball was suspended causing the end of the season to be shifted. College athletics did not resume until the weekend and some consideration was given by the NCAA of canceling that first weekend's games.

So, yes, other countries have responded this way in the wake of major terrorist attacks.

for those who think that it's unfair to skaters like my boy Chan or Liza to count the SP only into assigning points for GPF :
I say, it's much more unfair to deny those who did well in the SP... who knows, maybe the ones who could have pulled themselves up may not have made such a great move to the top.... nobody knows how the LP would have gone... but we all know how the SP did go... in sport, that's how it goes... often the second race of a ski event is canceled due to weather, and they just award the medals based on the first part of the race....

What really matters here are the people who lost their lives and their family... what matters is that Paris keeps getting targeted and people are no longer feeling safe... what matters is that skaters about to compete in a very well diffused event aren't being put at risk... who knows if there are other attacks planned? I certainly hope not... but I wouldn't want to have our dearest athletes being put at risk... for what sake? the possibility of a GPF? who cares really? I found out about the tragedy by getting a facebook notification that some of my Parisian friends had reported being safe... you have no idea what went through my mind... what happened? what about my other friends? the last thing on my mind was sport....

I'm pretty sure that was Protocol or for reason of respect for the fallen,
And the statement i was replying to was "Every country would've done this" which is not true, Though some did, Yes.

I'm quite dissapointed with ISU behavior during all this situation.
I was sure they'll announce cancellation of Exhibition immediately and will focus on LP (with spectators or not). But instead they wanted to carry on Exhibition as well, to avoid money loss, not realizing that it's quite immoral after what happened in Paris!!!
This certainly seemed inappropriate to French autorities therefore they refused even to discuss some kind of trade-off agreement and cancelled everything (and did it right in fact).

ISU must have been more flexible, and in fact they're partly responsible that situation went like this.

I love figure skating, that is why I am here, but with everything that had transpired last 16 hours, figure skating is far from my mind. I can only imagine how those young sensitive skaters are going through.

London Gatwick had a bomb scare this morning, I expect other Major Cities around Europe and beyond are on high alert too. Having drove through the city this morning everytime I hear some police/fire siren, my mind wonders, nerves are on edge. As you walk on the street, you can feel sort of muted silence for a Saturday. You can even sense alot of undercover vehicles in groups too en route somewhere. Deeply troubling with the state of the world.

Syria crisis - practically a time bomb readying to go off. Had everyone dealt with it sooner before it got so crazy, it may have been different. People need to be educated on the issues more. Extremism can happen everywhere. If people are in trouble, go and help, do not neglect. Had the world motivated less by practical issues such as money, power (what is in it for me) and resources, be more by humanity and empathy, outcome may have been different. Think of the vulnerable, the children, women, elders who are no different than your or my family, just ordinary people who became part of these atrocities committed by power hungry religious/political fanatics. Extremists exploit everywhere where there's neglect and vulnerable to further achieve their agenda.

I think it is the right decision to cancel given everything that has transpired, and seems it wasn't down to ISU anyway. Where there's shock, there need time to recuperate and regroup. Actually if they continue with the Gala, it is simply wrong. I doubt the skaters are in the mood for it either, these are young people who probably not experienced terrorism, think about it. They are not some circus animal that ISU can whip. Say: jump. They ask how high. Smile. They ask how much. If such event is to happen, they better ask their permission and may be on a voluntary basis instead of some commands.

But then we know skaters could have a meltdown too...
Gracie could have a terrible SP - did that never happen before?
Pairs is even worse, as most teams are virtually tied-up - a few points difference in SP that could be totally changed. Picking just 2 teams out of those to medal is like tossing a coin. It is not even about the importance of doing well all time, they all did equally well.
Those skaters have just 1 chance to do well, in the program that is worth the least. Everybody else in other events had 2 chances.
The skaters couldnt know that only SP would be worth it in advance either.
This is unfair to everybody else too, as some of the GPF people will be selected in a different criteria.

It is unfair also in case of ties? Suppose there is a tie and they have to use the highest score criteria >.>
just saying.

Apparently Trankov suggested that if they only go by SP scores they should cancel the GP final altogether

Any proof to this allegation? The only his comment on that that I found in Russian media is attached. Feel free to use Google.

I agree with Trankov on this.

Or just change the format of GPF and invite all skaters that participated in GPs.

I understand people getting angry of some of their favourites getting out because of that, and I would be too, but that's how it is sometimes.
Agreed. I am really sorry that the skaters have to go through this. It goes without saying that I'm even sorrier that this happened at all! And as much as I understand the disappointment of some..... it kind of makes me feel weird that we psych out about fairness of GP results in the face of a major terrorist attack. Yes, I get it, it's not fair at all to those skaters. They all worked hard and would have deserved a chance to participate in the GP series just like all the other skaters. On the other hand: terrorist attack!!

at FSU someone wrote Didier Gailhaguet in french tv confirmed that

No he didn't. It was a proposal. Nothing is certain until the ISU council which is scheduled for Tuesday (or possibly sooner).

Saw this in another Forum, But that's all

About using the SP results, lots of people are claiming it's unfair, when its not, its just unfortunate. there's a difference.

Fact #1. ISU wanted to keep going but the french government ordered to cancel the event. Nothing they or we can do about it.
Fact #2. All what we have left are the SP standings. What else can we use?

If this was a soccer/basketball/ match cancelled in the middle, the win will be counted for the team leading. That's the way it is in sports. Of course it totally sucks for the skaters that fell behind in the SP but also no one forced them to do so badly.

Doing the long in another location/date is almost an impossible logistic/financial nightmare not to mention also unfair for skaters who did well yesterday like Rodeghiero/J&C/Hubbell&Donohue, so I don't see what other objective/ quantifiable numbers you could use for qualificacion rather than let the SP count.

Can you translate, please, google traslated is awful

this would have been amazing but this competition probably will have to go for hours (not that I will be complaining!)

Is there any way the free skates could be held another time? Like, as soon as they can get out of France, the skaters and judges fly to some nearby country with a rink and have a closed skate there? Probably not realistic, but it would give the skaters a chance to skate a full competition.

It's terrible, but these attacks have sadly become a fact of life...the Russian plane from Egypt that crashed was also an act of terrorism, and life just went on as always for most of us, despite the greater loss of life. :ohwell:

Society cannot become paralyzed by these terrible events. Anyway, this article has some suggested solutions...hope the ISU considers all options carefully.

A match being held in London, not in France.

The poster declared that no other country has ever canceled events due to a terrorist attack. I pointed out that, in fact, the U.S. canceled scores of major sporting events due to the 2001 attacks. And people are arguing about that??? What??? I am confused.

As to the "Yes, but that was protocol/respect for the lost" response. How is this cancellation not protocol or respect for the lost? I suspect it is very much both and fans should respect that regardless of how GPF standings are affected. Sports is a pretty small thing in the big picture of the world. It is entertainment and diversion and if you can't accept that in times like this, you may have crossed the line from fan to fanatic.
