TEB is Cancelled

Oh, I totally agree that there is nothing wrong with discussing these things. I do think though that it would be good for some to rein back indignation and the 'sound and fury' and just be a bit more understanding that at the end of the day there are no easy solutions and it is just a sport.

Agree 100%. whatever the decision, it is just a sport.

Some people discuss the solution to a trivial sport dilemma and others take time to watch and shame them.

We all deal with life's events and world's disastrous state in different ways.

More reactions from Russian team:
Mishin suggests to solve scoring problem by either distributing TEB skaters among the remaining two GP events or by cancelling GP series all together. http://rsport.ru/figure_skating/20151114/879334726.html

Yulia Lipnitskaya: Also against the proposed solution to count only SP scores as it would be unfair to some top skaters. Also states that they only learned about cancellation after the morning training session http://rsport.ru/figure_skating/20151114/879335610.html

Tukt: Also worried about the proposal to count only SP and really wants to be at GPF but also understand the predicament. http://rsport.ru/figure_skating/20151114/879333498.html

Thanks for finding these!

I like Mishin's first idea. The one on distributing them to the other 2 remaining GP events. Seems like a good idea (Though I'm sure a lot of people say it's not, and I understand why) because it won't be extra long.
My only concern would be visas - sometimes it is not simple to get those.

I guess the only problem is that some of the skaters at TEB have also one events scheduled as part of the remaining tour. So the only way it work for them is to double count whatever the Free Skate result they will have in that event???

I have no disagreement with this, for the record :)

This comment is a big bull. France is in state of alert. If you think people would give a a damn about a GP FS competition you better wake up. What the hell does it mean "if the city doesn't feel to keep people safe"?!:rolleye: Do you think the city of Paris "didn't feel to keep people safe" last night?!:frown: What on earth are talking about?!

This is my opinion and if you think it's bull that's your opinion and that's that,
And it's not about GP placements (For crying out loud) It's about dealing with terrorism and sending out messages,
If that's the decision of the Mayor of Bordeaux than there's no much more to talk about, But it doesn't mean
that no one's allowed to criticise it in certain aspects, It's not like we're forcing anyone to change it, It's their call

People are talking about this thread

This is a big ugly disservice from phil.

I don't know any of you people personally but i'd bet money right now that all of you are shaken by these events
And would've done anything in your power if you could turn this around somehow,
And yet it doesn't mean people can't discuss the GP today, Or are douchebags for doing so.

Why is it not possible to feel for the victims of Paris and at the same time, care about and support TEB, a French event?:(

I really wouldn't have cancelled it, If the city doesn't feel it can keep people safe that's a big shame,
But if it's out of respect than that's their decision and that's that.

It's not about what the city feels or about respect. It's the rule of law: the country is in the state of emergency. The state of emergency has its consequences. You don't make exempts from the state of emergency even if you're living in the safest place in the country.

Hi Philip Hersh, how did you know we're talking about the cancellation while you were busy with concerns for the victims. And I guess that you were too busy to notice that we're concerned and care about people in Paris too.

I find it quite disgusting that any journalist would use such a horrible tragedy to bash another outlet. :sarcasm:

visa problem aside, how to you divide them. How do you count their results, are they compete with the 2 remaining GP skaters or other GP skaters from TEB. as we all know scores from different GPs could not be compared.
Therefore, a extra long program session for all TEB skaters is the only solution. Ideally in NHK, cos will have the most time for every party to prepare.

I just want them to decide on something so we'll know for sure what is going to happen. Hoping they reach a solution that will make the majority happy (as no solution will please everyone :palmf:).

I guess olyphil missed this on the GS banner:

He also missed the politics thread, which is the outlet for people whose response to the attacks is to engage in political discussion.

Sorry, but wanting to use people's personal best as an add on to the FP? o.O

I mean, if you want crazy ideas, I've got some : Why not use the Base Value of all the LPs to add to the SP scores?

Come on...

Trying to find one "solution" after another to get one particular skater or another on top or not, just because they did well or not in their SP, that's just madness.

I fully agree that using only the SP scores isn't fair to all the TEB participants, but you know what's not fair either? Everything that happened in Paris. One unfair situation isn't going to create fairness all around. It's terrible, but it is what it is.

As many have said, in all the other sports, results would be stopped when the event is being stopped, and that would be the end of it. That's unfair, I completely agree (I was against cancelling TEB in the first place anyway), but it's still the least unfair of all the solutions. And only the least unfair solution is an acceptable solution.

That wasn't their position earlier today and i don't know that it is now,
But if that's the case then it's absolutely acceptable (not that anyone's asking)

But it's just so convenient :sarcasm: and why would anyone want to give a nuanced report and show both sides of the story when you get so much more hits by pointing fingers and saying hey look, the evil, heartless folks are over there. Quit classy indeed. Quality journalism at its best.

I think using only the SP scores is the most fair right now, those scores reflect what the skaters did at the competition and not PB or past scores.

I agree. Because it wouldn't be fair that the skaters who skated at TEB would not qualify because of what happened in Paris. Skaters like Gracie Gold, Shoma Uno, etc who could qualify for the GPF would have to see what will happen. All the skaters here worked so hard for this. For the ones who were in arm's reach of qualifying for the GPF will have to see what's going to happen.

Me? I suggest some time later to have an event only for the FP after NHK. I know it's totally unfeasible due to money, visas, timing, ISU's decisions, etc...but it's an incomplete competition in my mind.

Canceling the GP series is a bit too much in my opinion. As you said earlier: No one's going to be happy, but I hope the decision will benefit most skaters.
