2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

Rockerskating's Jackie Wong has his Canadian nationals preview [Men's and Pair's] up :

Personally, disagree with his ranking of the men. Seems to just be looking at the ISU SB list, rather than trajectories this season. Would be surprised to see Nam in silver or Liam in fourth, and I think he's underestimating Kevin. But it looks like he's aware that there is a pack of contenders that could lead to a surprising result.

I disagree with placing Nam second as well. His performance has not improved since being a junior. Liam has exactly what Nam is missing; clean footwork and good skating skills. Just such an inconsistent jumper. I think Kevin would be my pick for the silver medal but I would love a Nadeau spoiler. It is all about who lands their jumps. Liam and Nam are inconsistent and Nadeau was injured so I guess we will have to see.

Corey Circelli, who won the novice men's title today, is also doing double duty. He came 4th with partner Katerina Kasatkin in novice ice dance today.

Today's double-duty skater is Evelyn Walsh. Her third flight draw for the Junior Women's SP will have her on the ice in the early afternoon for that. Later, she and her Junior Pairs partner Trent Michaud will skate last [they are currently in first place], but with only 5 teams they should skate before 4:00 pm. Go Evelyn!:hap10:

And yet we have some folks arguing that skating two major events in successive days due to the Olympic team event is too much?!!:drama:

Justine Brasseur and Hannah Dawson were also going to do double duty in junior pairs and junior women. Along with Walsh, all three ladies were doing a fantastic job this season. Such tough girls...but then again, I think pairs ladies are just something else.

Junior women is on now. Aurora Cotop just put in a beautiful performance.

Congrats on the thousanth post Mango!

And we're only on the third day of nationals......

I wish I could watch at work.

Justine Brasseur won the Novice pairs and Novice ladies title in the same year. She's very talented and was the highest placing pair at World Junior Championships last year.

I love Justine. My only hope for her was to find a partner that matches her height and other qualities.

Here's a new article about Meagan and Eric, which has details about the changes to their programs: https://www.thestar.com/sports/amat...radford-go-with-flow-minus-throw-dimanno.html

I hope that they have a great competition at Canadians! :)

when i saw di manno... i expected something awful... this article isn't deep nor revealing things us fans know for the most part already but for others who follow the sport casually it was okay and not trashy... wow.... i wonder if she really wrote this one LOL

Cross posting here because it's kind of big news

Julianne Séguin and Charlie Bilodeau have WD from the competition due a concussion suffered by Julianne.

What is it with concussions?! First Kirsten, now Julianne. Pairs ladies

So, so sad. .......I really want them back and solid. It's got to be heartbreaking after their struggle to regain their groove following her other injury last winter. Let's look forward to a strong Olympic season for them.

And am glad that Walsh/Michaud played it on the safe side and dropped to the 2Tw for their Junior Pairs FS this afternoon, given she'd already skated her SP in the Junior Women's only a couple of hours earlier. As we discussed on that thread, Evelyn Walsh is such an incredibly determined pairs girl. Pairs ladies are incredible.

I think Mr. Wong is pretty wrong about Liam and Nam. Though I would like Nam third. I think Firius might be dumped. You have Reynolds and Balde developing their performance style and Nam regaining his jumps after dealing with probably one of the largest growth spurts in skating history. Liam technically is too weak and that should effect his pcs too. As for pairs well besides Seguin and Bilodeau are out I would like more comments about Moore - Towers and Marinaro. Is it my imagination but he just isn't physically very strong. Yes, she is compact but despite that - she is very short so she is still relatively light but he struggles - like he needs to work out more.

I think physically it shouldn't be a problem - skaters some times skate back to back for practice two freeskates. They practice daily their programs (both fs/ and sp) all in one day and then again the next. However, the competition atmosphere and pressure is different - it takes a lot out of you.

It's called clickbait and ad revenue :rolleye: Ethics and integrity is out the window these days.

When Gracie was rising to prominence in 2014, I remember interviews with Michelle Kwan saying she could one of the best and end the world medal drought etc.etc. but somehow here in Canada Kaetlyn got an article demeaning her.

I hope next year we will see articles about figure skaters promoting them as medal contenders for the Olympics. Canada is a big country in terms of land but small in terms of people so endorsements are hard to come by if they aren't winning medals/Olympic season. Even Patrick who had RBC and General Mills (probably others too) sponsoring him had trouble affording figure skating fees sometimes.

On the topic of Nationals, I am so sad to see Bruce Waddell so low after such a great outing for him last year. He really caught my attention last year.
Generally speaking, Canada doing well the year before Olympics does not help them ie the men have been on man occasions the defending world champion only to win silver. Yep, Canada has had more Susan Lucci's than Nathan Chen has quads. Orser, Stoijko both have two silvers each at the Olympics, then there is Chan's silver and Buttle's bronze though some have not been as going in as gold medallists form worlds. I believe Brasseur and Eisler may have gone in as faves etc.

Posting here as well. Ted Barton took a quiet moment during the Junior Men's event to promote livestream coverage of the senior practices tomorrow.

It sounds like there will be practices at both the TD Place venue and a local community rink, but all the seniors will have time at TD Place over the upcoming days. It will be the TD Place ones that are live streamed.

Ladies 9:00 am

Dance 11:30 am

Pairs 5:55 pm

Men's TD Place practice will be Friday...

Junior Men's ....Ice resurfacing just getting going before the warm-up for the final flight.

Some mixed feelings about the outcome in Junior men's. Suggest folks check out our discussion on the thread.
