2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

Here's the event schedule again https://skatecanada.ca/wp-content/up...dule-01-10.pdf

You will see that some of the lower ranked flights are not listed for TV broadcast. You should be able to get those at the same SC livestream page as all of the rest of the "wall to wall" coverage by hitting the livestream tab on this page....https://skatecanada.ca/events/2017-canadian-tire-national-skating-championships/

Portions of the event that will be broadcast on TV will are shown in red blocks on the event schedule.

The highest interest flights will be on CTV and portions of others will be broadcast on CTV's sports affiliate TSN in Canada, but I understand TV will be geoblocked outside Canada [and TSN is a cable network]. If you have these networks, you can use the id and pw from your satellite or cable account to log into livestreaming on the sites for these networks if you prefer that.

If anyone has information on US access [Ice Network??] or other international availability please post. In past years, SC's livestream shut down when the TV broadcast started up, I'm not clear whether that is the contractual arrangement this year with CTV/TSN. In an ideal world, SC livestream would be available everywhere outside the blackout area where there is TV coverage,

sorry, i don't know of any livestream link but I think someone will post it again if it airs on NBC. I had to pay for Ice Network because I wanted to see the younger skaters.

At one point Ted apologized for the oddangle picture in the Kiss and Cry because he said the cameras from TSN had been set up as well and they had priority for the best view. I don't think it is just a question of the feed switching channels.

I was so eaastic for our top three ladies last night! What a competition! Kaetlyn definitely stole the show. People can blather on about nationals inflation all they'd like, till they're blue in the face, but guess what, its nationals! Inflation is a fact of life at every national championship. It is what it is, and I agree with the placements.

Skate Canada has named the skaters they've chosen for 2017 ISU Championships.

Really hoping that our senior singles skaters can place high enough to get 3 spots in Men's and Ladies's at the Olympics .....I want so much to see a Canadian team of 18!

And also hoping for Sarah to do well....it would be great to get back to 2 berths for Canadian women in juniors.

I think the fed has made the right decision.

Julianne has a concussion ...however, they need to compete and get points for their world standings... It would be too early for 4CC for them, so putting them on the world team is wise. MTM2.0 will be able to gain some points as well , going to 4CC. If Juilanne is not healed, MtM2.0 will be ready to replace them.
Wait, what? Julianne and Charlie are going to worlds?

It's a miracle.

Skate Canada has actually assigned its junior and novice level skaters to an international event. Bavarian Open, held February 14-19 in Oberstdorf. A summary of who's going...

Junior Men
Nicolas Nadeau
Roman Sadovsky
Conrad Orzel

Junior Ladies
Aurora Cotop
Sarah Tamura

Junior Pairs
Lori-Ann Matte / Thierry Ferland
Evelyn Walsh / Trent Michaud

Junior Ice Dance
Marjorie Lajoie / Zachary Lagha
Ashlynne Stairs / Lee Royer

Advanced Novice Boys
Corey Circelli
Stephen Gogolev

Advanced Novice Girls
Catherine Carle (name misspelled)

Advanced Novice Ice Dance
Natalie D'Alessandro / Bruce Waddell

Medallists in all but novice pairs were assigned. Even novice ice dance. Looks like someone heard our whining. Getting international experience/having a skate off before Junior Worlds for all those assigned should help get these guys ready to go. A total of 18 athletes are going. I think the last time we had as many Canadians at one event was probably 2016 Autumn Classic. Good job Skate Canada!

Uhm, did anyone else miss that Alaine's got her own cute tissue box stuffie now? (Adore the look on Brian Orser's face....)

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPvUnQkDNeS/

And can anyone definitively say what it is?

It looks like a groundhog (marmot) to me...which would be totally Eastern Ontario, but I could be wrong.....

-------------------------------------------------

editing to add...Figured out that Alaine had tagged the stuffie tissue holder as "corgidogmay" .......and according to the header on the private Instagram account, corgidogmay appears to be a Canadian living in Japan and is a fan of figureskating and other sports...

Skating at Rideau Hall

Skating has been a winter tradition at the Ottawa residence of the Governor General of Canada [GG], the Queen's vice-regal representative, since the 19th Century, dating to the time of Lord Dufferin who was GG from 1872 to 1878.

https://www.gg.ca/document.aspx?id=15123

And it is accessible to the public. If you are travelling to Ottawa in the winter, you can reserve your group ahead and get tickets [one time per season]. There is also open public skating sessions Saturdays and Sundays...

http://www.gg.ca/document.aspx?id=15335

In acknowledgement of that history, as part of the year of celebration of 150 years since Canada was formed in Confederation, a Winter Pavilion has been opened at Rideau Hall [from a renovated former dairy] and the long standing natural ice rink is has been replaced with an outdoor rink with refrigeration that will extend the season, and ensure a skate-able surface through the ups and downs of temperature.

Some of Canada's earliest figure skating events were hosted by the GG, and one of Canada's oldest clubs, the Minto Skating Club, was established by the then GG the Earl of Minto and retains heraldry with his coronet.

https://www.gg.ca/event.aspx?id=108

So, as much as many of you were exasperated to have the GG drop in during nationals last week [mainly because there was no live stream and it added a further delay to CTV's broadcast], I'd argue it's important to acknowledge the important role that GGs have played in fostering the ice skating in Canada.....

Personally, I think it's great that the current GG is a figure skating fan, and enjoy having skating in the limelight given the profound attention we see usually devoted to hockey culture.

Thank you TGee for this history. So wonderful to have our Governor General David Johnston, or Mr. Canada, take such an interest in our National championship.

For our American friends, Mr. Johnston was reported as one of the real life inspirations for the writer of Ryan O'Neil's character in the movie, "Love Story". A former Harvard academic, hockey star and team captain, a university President and all around great guy, Mr. Canada was asked to stay on as our Governor General longer than any other GG in modern history.
