2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

well for me Ottawa is close enough but for people from Quebec city... it is far....

Quelle horreur!!!

Sincerely, this makes me suspect that they don't have announcers, posters or promotional materials that meet the expectations of Québecois [or the language police]....

Why else bypass a major market? Unless they feel, as some of the Quebec papers do, that Julianne and Charlie are the only true Québecois members of the national team, such that a good turnout can't be expected in Montreal.

Which seems wildly inconsistent with the interest that ACI and Challenge receive in Pierrefonds...

Really? I don't normally read French-language newspapers, so I had no idea some of them carried that attitude. So that means the French Canadian press don't consider Nic to be "Québecois" enough? :scratch2:

Maybe the Worlds team? Because he's definitely Québecois. French name, lives there, francophone with a Québecois accent.

Does your origin matter if you're happy to represent a region? Tessa & Scott are repping QC, as are Meagan and Eric. Only Kirsten & Michael keep their WO affiliation while in Quebec.

A quick note: Roman Sadovsky is out of Bavarian Open and Joseph Phan is in instead. Not sure why...I am thinking it's got to be some kind of injury. Hopefully he's back for Junior Worlds. Happy to see Joseph get a shot at competing since he was so bummed after Nationals, though I'm feeling for Roman.

Pj Kwong, Carol Lane, and Mike Slipchuk did a live Behind the Boards in PyeongChang:

i am pretty sure quebec people would run to see SOI....

actually, when they announced the touring dates, many quebecois complained on facebook they were not coming to quebec this year. They replied, we hope to come back next year.

With both the pairs and dance teams training in Montreal, with Patrick able to speak french... even meagan's name is french (Duhamel)..... lol... so is Alaine's

I mean if eric and luis fenero make the cover of the montreal gay magazine, I don't think there is an issue about quebec caring or not about other provinces skaters.

Quebec has a long tradition in pairs and brought up the last lady to medal at worlds and olympics... it used to be pretty good for ladies when you consider josée, cynthia, joannie, amélie all having won the national title... so yeah... i don't think that's an issue.

and of course, they could have added nic nadeau and perhaps veronik mallet (with S/B) to attract more locals if neded... and what about elladj...

in other words, i don't think it's a cutural nor language issue but a logistics issue (cash/venue)

I agree with you mate. That's why I asked you about arenas. I know the Habs make playoff runs so Bell Centre might be tough to book but there is Videotron Centre but that may be too big. I'm not familiar with other rinks for spectators apart from the one in Pierrefonds and the Habs practice rink in Brossard.

Meagan's skates got to South Korea. Crisis averted. Phew.

It's the crack of dawn on the West Coast and I'm just doing a quick check and see if the entire team has arrived. It sounds like Meagan has her skates and that is Huge...

I thought that Meagan Duhamel is Quebecois too?

I thought that Meagan Duhamel is Quebecois too?

nope... she is from a small town in ontario... she has never mentioned French Canadian origins but has mentioned Finnish origrins :)

Chartrand, clearly has a French Canadian name as well but nope... she doesn't speak it... nor does her dad if I recall...

One thing to mention : Eric and Meagan are not going back to Ontario... they have been in quebec for many years... I would be very surprised if Eric left the gayest and most musical town after his career... maybe to study... but he can only get a better deal in hollywood if he wants to write film scores....

Meagan is already married to someone who will stay in quebec :)

many of my friends come from other provinces... as soon as they eat a bagel or a poutine here, they never go back... they scramble and learn french... they get jobs... and live our socialist ways LOL ... too bad Stars on Ice doesn't visit us ;)

Regarding Meagan's skates... thank goodness... I really want them to redeem themselves here.

One of the worst things about leaving Ottawa for school was leaving the bagels. Montreal style are so superior.

The attitude that not everyone that represents Québec is Québecois is held by some of the French language papers at least... See this representative article about Julianne and Charlie that I translated and posted to their thread here. The headline was: The space left in the firmament since the retirement of Joanie Rochette is now filled. Charlie Bilodeau and Julianne Séguin are on the way providing a completely Quebecois touch that had disappeared in the high spheres of world figure skating.

Meagan and Eric are noted in this article as "Ontarians that now train in St. Léonard."

Nic would be Québecois by this perspective, but as yet he has been competing internationally as a junior. So, he wouldn't be on the SOI tour. And I do see local stories on other skaters such as Véronik Mallet and Camille Ruest.

Not seeing this attitude in the French language daily papers from Montreal. And I'm not assuming that this is really the way many folks east of Montreal would see things.

Just wondering if the attitudes that I'm seeing in some of the sports sections of the Journal de Québec and other regional papers is impacting what the marketing folks think. If so, I think it's a shame.

Skate Canada seems to be doing very well in terms of being a fully and truly bilingual organization with very active and deep grass-roots in Québec. So, it would seem that there should be high interest in seeing top international skaters live, regardless of where they are from.

For me after leaving my year spent in Old Quebec and studying at Laval, it was the croissants and the café. But dang that wind off the St Lawrence was brutal at times.

coming from a guy who has lived from one ocean to the other...

local newspaper and Journal de Québec is a tiny local piece of "garbage" :) tend to write such headlines just to stress the fact that young kids from quebec, trained in quebec, are making it big internationally... we see this all the time in other regions as well.... like "young Coquitlam guy with fuzzy hair wins 4CC, filling a very long gap since Sandhu won GPF thanks to miss Zayak" of course my headline is fake... but i have seen them all over the country...

I don't think it's an issue of culture and language if SOI isn't showing up in Montreal... BTW it's been a few years now but the % of French speakers in the city is below 50%.

The newspaper probably mentioned Meagan and Eric there simply to stress the fact that sure, S/B are shooting high but let's not forget that we have World Champions right there... but they aren't quebecois ;) it's just small scale writing... yet it's not Rosie Di Manno bad ;)

Just an FYI, Canadian junior world team and the novice and junior champions are competing this week at Bavarian Open before junior worlds.

Stephen Gogolev
won the Advanced Novice boys [no surprise, but would like to be able to see what went amiss with his SP], Corey Circelli placed 4th...scores lower than usual for both due to limitations of the program content at this level...
