2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Just a guess, but it could very well have been a planned withdrawal from the FS??

I think that is exactly what happened. It has happened in the past. Alissa Czisny used to do her LP and skip the SP or Vice Versa . I didn't know you could do that at an event but, maybe club comps are different. Is this a sanctioned event?

USFS sanctions all the summer club competitions. Some anouncements seem to go out last minute - the reason is typically a delay in getting the sanctioning. I believe USFS also sanctions most (if not all) of the skating shows.

For summer competitions, you typically register seperately for the short and long. Early in the season, it is not uncommon to skate in just one or the other. Typically you know when you register that only one will be ready so that is what you register for.

:otopic:

I've been getting pop up ads that I have never seen before in this section of the forum. Is anyone else seeing these ads? They are causing posts to jump around when I try to click on them...

Well you can go ad free if you pay a small fee to the board ;)

Mirai Nagasu and Angela Wang (and others) are scheduled to perform this afternoon in the Help Lucy Fight Leukemia fundraiser for Lucy and Jeremy Barrett.

I put streaming information in the U.S. Men thread:

Polina Edmunds is scheduled to perform at a NYC fundraiser on Jul 18 for Right To Play USA:

Psssst ;) ... a code for 50% off the ticket price is here:

[I think this event is the rescheduled version of the March 2017 fundraiser at which Mirai was scheduled to appear.
The March 2017 event was cancelled because of a bad storm, and Mirai is scheduled to compete at Skate Detroit next week. She had taken part in the 2016 edition of the Right To Play fundraiser.]

Looking ahead ... in September, Polina is scheduled for An Evening With Champions again this year.
Emily Hughes once again will host; Yasmin Siraj (and Selena Zhao) once again will appear. (Only a few cast members have been announced at this point.)

Results from the LA open were interesting. Starr, Kaitlyn and Vivian competed as seniors. Karen Chen competed in the short only. Starr came surprisingly close to Karen in the short; she won the competition, but Kaitlyn edged her in the free. ...

I overlooked earlier that Audrey Shin won Junior Ladies overall  ... which also would support her assignment to the Asian Open (although maybe USFS already had made the decision beforehand).
Her SP score of 58.87 would have won the Senior Ladies SP. (She placed second in the Junior Ladies FS.)

And if anyone has not clicked on humbaba's link, Kaitlyn Nguyen "was awarded the Van Valkenburg Trophy for the most outstanding overall performance of the competition."

Audrey had already won the Aerial competition and was the highest scoring age eligible junior. Hanna came third. On This link you can see they are both the high scoring age eligible juniors in the country right now. So they earned these spots before the competition.

I think this is a great idea for the two of them. They haven't face off against really tough competitors like the Japanese or Korean, so this is a great chance for them to get their feet wet. They may get a JGP slot, but the competition is stiff. I think Starr and Kaitlyn have their slots secured, with a possibility of a second depending on how the summer pans out. Then it's a fight for the remaining ones. Ashley Lin and Ashley Kim are on thr ISP and have scored pretty well. It will all come down to whose TES is the highest and most consistent. The PCS scores are subjective...

Yep, I had mentioned their Aerial and Broadmoor results in my first post re Asian Open. :agree:

Sorry, didn't see.

Also by sending Alyssa it's clear they want her to get experience now. She won't be eligible for another two seasons. But her back loading and jumps are seriously impressive. She has JW champ written all over her.

Any updates at all on Gracie? Anyone seem videos? I'm very curious about her music choices and whether she'll be a threat on the GP. Is she doing any senior Bs?

I'm anxious to see how Gracie will do this season too, BUT perhaps it's best to just leave her alone and be patient. (I know some people on here are in a position to see her skate without "bothering" her, but still...)

Starr just posted her senior long program. It looks like she's attempting a 3A this season. Glad to see her landing those flips.

Hi frida80, thanks for posting this! I just watched it. What a beautiful performance....I had been looking forward to her lp :) A little rough on her jumps, but hopefully she gets them polished in the big competitions.

By the way, someone mentioned she should put her bun on top her head, I disagree...I don't like buns on top of girls head like they are going to their junior or senior proms, lol, I never liked it on Gracie Gold, and I'm glad Starr has hers down, it looks nice that way :)

I can't believe that ladies still put their hair buns. A French Twist is much more attractive and just as easy to execute. I don't know what you'd call this version of a French twist but I really like it. It's Ashley Wagner's hair from the 2016. :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gouttBMz-UM

I like french twists too but I think that Starr has way too much hair to make it work, especially when you take all the spinning and jumping into consideration. French twist works best with finer hair imo. Regardless of the hairstyle, I hope Starr will have a good start of the season, she looks like she's in great shape!

Patiently waiting for any news on Gracie, especially on the music but as many have already pointed out, no news might be the best news!

Not sure if this has already been posted elsewhere, but it appears that Mariah Bell is training a triple axel. Looks good!!

That clip is from February of 2015, when Mariah was still training in Colorado. She talked about trying it for fun in a interview with the Skating Lesson around that same time. But she mentioned in a post nationals interview that she was interested in training it this summer.

Looks like Karen Chen is signed up to skate her long at Philly. Haley Beavers is listed to do the Senior short only.

Is this a sanctioned event? I'd love to see her new program. Is she keeping "On Golden Pond?" I loved that program.
