2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Of, course there is a difference between using the same music, but the program being significantly different. Has any lady won an olympic medal using a repeat program? While they may not suppose to, I suspect judges unconsciously give slightly lower scores for a repeat program.

Adelina's LP was a repeat, Carolina Kostner's Bolero, Mao reworked her LP to Masquerade Waltz into a SP for 2010, Shizuka Arakawa brought back Turandot, Sasha Cohen was doing Dark Eyes for the second season in a row, it's not unheard of and I guess it's not an issue these days as long as you rotate and get the level 4s.

There's a pecking order in the rinks with every coach and especially the top ones like Raf. His priorities are Chen, Wagner and Rippon right now. Raf also coaches Brezina, Ponsart and then of course Mariah. So the latter two are less of a priority right now than the first 3-4 skaters. All coaches do this, you'll work with an assistant coach more if you aren't one of the priority skaters at the time. For instance, this happened to Lysacek when he went to Carroll in 2003. He worked more with Congemi with Carroll's orders due to Frank having more prioritized skaters at the time such as Goebel.

So in Mariah's case her choice is not to work with Rohene in CO when she doesn't get priority time from Raf in CA right now etc. That is definitely not how these things work.

How old is Mariah Bell?? Maybe she figures that she will become the top dog in Raf's rink after the Olympic season ends. I'm fairly sure that Adam and Ashley will be moving on following the OG's and maybe that's what she's waiting for. Raf has such a good reputation and maybe she feels it's worth. Frankly, I would have stayed with Kori because after Jason, wasn't she the top skater in Kori's rink?

She's 21 and she will definitely be one of the top ladies going into/sticking around for 2022. And just because she was one of the top skaters at Kori's rink doesn't mean she should stick around if it wasn't working there for her anymore.

I remember an interview Raf did with Russian media where he said that Mariah had initially wanted Raf as a second coach, or have some sort of co-coaching arrangement but he said he wouldn't do that unless Kori gave the OK -- and she didn't.

I always thought that was odd at the time -- Jason's worked with other coaches over the course of his career -- but in hindsight it makes sense now. I think Kori probably sensed that the coaching relationship wasn't working for whatever reason and she wanted Mariah to decide whether she wanted to start afresh or tweak what she was doing in Colorado. Or that that a co-coaching arrangement would not be effective, either for Mariah or either coach.

I think a lot of her success last season wasn't just cause she switched coaches -- though that contributed to it (namely being training mates with Ashley, IMO/and meshing better with Raf's coaching style) -- but I think because she asserted herself and believe she was a top U.S. Ladies contender and I think it started by deciding to move on from Kori and get coached by Raf.

She's made a big deal about learning Raf's jumping technique this summer, so I imagine that has contributed to a lot of the choreography issues...relearning jump technique is always challenging -- doing it while you're trying to prepare for the long Olympic season makes it 100X complicated.

I agree. Did Mariah move, is that why she switched to Raf? She kept Rohene, right? Isn't he still with Kori? Look, it's not my place to question a skaters motives and lord knows I had a weird career. If Mariah's happy, I'm happy.

Mariah switched coaches to Raf in Aug 2016, which meant that yes she moved, she kept Rohene's choreo last season (since the choreo would have been set long before the move). Yes Ward still works out of CO from Kori's camp.

I thought I had read on this forum that Mariah is/was in a relationship with a French skater in Raf's camp & wanted to spend more time with him.
So that was why she wanted a "co" arrangement with Raf/Kori, so she could go back and forth.

Ohhhhhh. That's very interesting.

Romain Ponsart *sigh* and Mariah left Monument at the same time to move to Raf.

She is in a relationships with Romain Ponsart of France and has been openly for some time. He actually followed Vincent Restencourt to 7K and skated there for awhile and that is where their relationship started. Vincent left for Tammy Gambill. Romain and Mariah stayed behind for awhile at 7K and then moved to Raf together.

she explains the return to Moulin Rouge in her Instagram post here

aka i don't wanna spend time to learn a new program because i need to work on the jumps.

While she can totally do that, this is something she already did in the past and most importantly this would be her third season with Moulin Rouge, and her short program is also a recycle!

What if a skater keeps a program for 5 years? i hope ISU will set a "Zayak-rule" for programs.

Back in 2015 i said that as a judge i wouldn't give huge PBs on the components to a skater who reuses too much a program: now someone can tell me that skaters can approach the programs with more maturity and other improvements, but she was already mature back in 2015-2016.

It's evident that she's doing it because she doesn't want to risk with new programs, but i'm not too fond of this strategy.

I fear they will def hold marks back with two repeat programs. I was ok with the Sp but I think Olympic program should be new. I think a lot of people skating to lalaland changed her mind. I'd rather see black swan or Samson and Delilah than moulin again. It is a mistake Ashley!!!!! Someone pls tell her.

Yeah at least the SP should be new. (although even a program reused for the third time sounds weird)

But she is going to skate canada next month so i don't think she has the time to prepare a new program at this point.

May I also add Victor Petrenko used the same long for nearly 3 years. Katarina kept her winning Sarajevo program for 2 years. Nancy Kerrigan used her 4th of July program two years in a row. Back in time, Janet Lynn, Scott Hamilton, Brian Orser and Roz Sumners regularly recycled parts of previous programs.

I wouldn't like to see her black swan up against Alina Z - old vs young.

Maria Butyrskaya did the same thing in 1998/1999 and won during second rendition of her program. This however, would be Ashley's 3rd version of Moulin wouldn't it?

For me, reusing programs to such an extent implies Ashely may have more troubles with her jumps than previous seasons. With age, there is probably a time when jumps start to decline.

Shizuka Arakawa won Worlds in 2004 recycling Turandot and then the Olympics in 2006 when she switched back to Turandot and used it for a third time. However, all three versions of that program were different from one another though had similar music cuts.
