2018 US Men's Oly/World/4CC team announced

No. They Didn't. They had him winning the silver medal at the 2018 Nationals. Stop thinking about the Nationals before the Olympics as an Olympic Trial. It is not billed like that.

There are specific criteria. All of the criteria BESIDES 2018 Nationals are in favor of Adam over Ross.

Everyone:

STOP THINKING OF THE NATIONALS IN AN OLYMPIC YEAR AS AN OLYMPIC TRIAL. THAT IS NOT WHAT IT IS!

but then why wasn't Ross picked for Worlds? Don't they pick the top 3 from the Nationals usually?

Exactly!!!! What I can't get over is the fact that Ross won the Silver by a lot......It's not like he was 3rd and barely beat Vincent. The bigger insult is Jason being named alternate #1...How does the 6th place finisher bump a silver medalist out of anything....There is no logic here. If myself and several other devoted and knowledgeable fans are confused, can you imagine what the casual fans must think. When they see Ross off the team after the way performed in San Jose, I'm sure they're just shocked as we are.

The thing is, Ross really didn’t. He won the silver by less than a point, and was over 4th place by 6 points, which isn’t a huge margin by any standard. I agree he definitely should be on the Olympic team, though, but this is erroneous.

True...The margin over Jason and Max is what I meant....How did they get ahead of him on the alternate list??? I love Max but, he came in 9th place....9th.

I would have been perfectly fine with Ross on the Olympic team and Adam on the world (three spots for next year are at stake so its more important who goes there) but this is a total joke. Not only does Ross not go to Olympics or worlds despite finishing 2nd (when three spots were available) but isn't even 1st alternate in either as well :palmf: Neither Adam or Jason will be coming close to the world or Olympic podium so that makes it even more silly. Nationals officially means nothing anymore they should just go full on women's gymnastics and do it all behind the scenes where they can do as they please because that's exactly what they did :palmf::palmf::palmf:

I think we will see more of this in the years to come, especially in the Olympic year and the reason is that skaters won't only compete in their individual events but, like gymnastics, they will have also a team event that they have to manage in order to maximize the chance of podium. Now, US only have a pair spot and, unless they are mad, they will take a look at Sochi and not tire Nathan at the team event, as he is clearly a medal contender. So they need a second male skater to have the free program (I think Rippon has been chosen for this reason, but they could also go out and risk Vincent). With that in mind, body of work (and possibly specialization in the short or free segment) will be more and more important in the years to come.
If this is the case, I'd rather see the best performances of the night awarded at Nationals and the team chosen indipendently than blatant bad judging in order to have the predetermined team on the podium.
ED to add: on the other hand, I'm really sorry for Ross, especially for the fact that he is not the first alternate.

The whole thing I think proves more then anything that Max Aaron NEVER stood a chance :(

he could have artistically become Nureyev and Nijinsky reincarnated and land his jumps but it would never have made them stray from the Chen-Rippon-Brown team :slink:

I woke up and saw the list, I haven't read this thread yet but to be honest, I was confused mostly on the alternates and assignments for other competitions. I am so sorry for Ross and Grant.

This might be a stupid question, but if a skater with no GPS medal and no good average scores wins the nationals, is he sent to the Olympics or Worlds? Or like in Japan, national champion is going to the Worlds no matter what? I'm asking this for the coming seasons in future.

Here is the videos of the selection of the Olympic Men's Team:
Part 1
Part 2

Thank you for sharing these videos. I liked Adam’s first comment a lot and I think this is the right team for olympics.

I do feel for Ross. Nobody takes away from him that great skate. He will keep that.

Winning Nationals no long guarantee you a ticket to either Olympics nor Worlds. That rule was toss out last year I believed.

then they should just cancel nationals all together if they have to question the spot of even the national champion :slink:

no today- freshness - new skaters skating to their capablity

figures was named by the isu ; so how did the skaters like ross get on the team at worlds. mirai-

it still applies.

sorry but the reshowed tara triple loop/triple loop ur according to today

i am upset about being played to hype certain skaters who got on team when showed again.

i was played .

ppe to make sure

Ross Miner is not even the first alternate, which tells me that USFS highly regards "body of work" of Jason over Ross' 2nd at Nationals.

The final decision is expected, but it really contrasts with the decision on Karen over Ashley.

I feel so bad for Ross!! Is this Adams first time going to Olympics? If so, I'm ok with him being the third man, and that is a really tough choice they had to make, imo, with Adam, Miner, and Jason (who's my least favorite). Jason, I feel could wait another four years, he's only 23, but Miner is 26, only 2 years younger than Adam, 28, and this may be his only chance to go to olympics, but another four years and Ross will be 30, that's why my heart aches for him, I love watching this guy skate.

I feel so bad for Ross. Personally, I prefer Adam’s skating, but throwing over the silver medalist for him? I understand the decision, but I don’t need to like it.

Here is what I don’t understand, and frankly, appears inconsistent at best and hypocritical at worst: how can it be OK to replace Ross with Adam, but yet be some major outrage to name Jason as first alternate? If the body of work of Adam means that it is somehow acceptable that he should go to the Olys instead of Ross, that same body of work places Jason ahead of Ross. Either it is applied to all skaters, or it is not applied at all.

Since First Alternate means as much as Miss Congeniality, not sure it really matters.....

Unless they put up a rubric where you get x number of points for making the Grand Prix final and x number of points for getting a medal at nationals, etc. and show that skaters with the top points have been placed on the team, it looks unfair.

It looks like they like just like one skater better than another, then find reasons to back up their opinions. Maybe they shouldn't like Ross. Maybe he's disappointed them over the years. Or maybe they're afraid of the coaches/lawyers/parents of certain skaters and don't want to get them mad. IIRC, the story was that Polina was ready to hire a lawyer if she wasn't put on the team. Don't know if it's true or not, but I read it someplace (possibly here). Same with the story about Max's mother.

Had Nathan had a bad day, it would be one thing. He is in medal contention. Ashley was in medal contention in 2014. It was a bit of a longshot, but she did medal at the GPF. Todd Eldredge was a possibility for a medal in 1992, he had medaled the year before. This is the first time, I think, such controversy has arisen over two men who will be at best around 8th or 9th. I doubt they'll use quadless Adam in the team event, but I could be wrong.

While the US generally has always stuck with the medalists to be the people to go to the Olympics/Worlds the actual guidelines for the selection process allows for the selection committee to look at the body of work and pick someone like Rippon this year or Wagner in 2014 who crumbled under pressure at Nationals but had a better overall season than someone who rose to the moment of Nationals. The problem is that this isn't historically what's been done in the US so now that they are going with this 'body of work' guideline they are getting a lot of negative attention for it. With the alternate and 4CCs selection that the committee chose, honestly I don't see any point behind it except to reinforce the 'Nationals aren't everything' point for the team selection.

In my opinion as far as the team selection I'm someone who likes the old way the US did things in doing it playoff style where Nationals decides who goes if you don't perform well here you've not earned a spot on an Olympics/Worlds team. In regards to this current situation my big issue is that regardless of whether Miner or Rippon went to the Olympics with a lights-out performance from either 1, neither would podium (unless a lot of craziness goes down), the only difference between the 2 is that Rippon is likely to put out a more consistent 5th-10th place finish. The Olympics doesn't affect how many spots the US gets at Worlds next year so Miner should have gone to the Olympics and then Rippon goes to World - very little drama.

This whole situation reminds me of the movie Stick it, which is about gymnastics, but at a competition a girl does a phenomenal vault and then gets a deduction for an obscure rule and the commentator says - this is why the sport loses fans, fans just saw an amazing performance and don't understand why a gymnast was not rewarded.

The bone they did throw all around—to Caroline last year, too, IIRC—is that an alternate slot gets higher funding for next year. I suppose that’s one reason to go 3 deep on the alternates.
The slots for Grand Prix events are based on points from the previous several seasons. Caroline had been injured, and therefore wasn’t high enough in ranking to earn a spot. The only spot that was given was the 3rd spot at Skate America which was assigned to Bradie after she started skating really well over the summer to earn it. They actively are watching those without assignments at summer comps to assign them to whoever is showing promise. It wasn’t a snub, Bradie did very well and worked hard to get the attention and earn that invitation.

Can you imagine Yuzuru or Medvedeva ever saying such funny things? :sarcasm:

And these are World champions several times over.
Adam is calling himself ancient. He’s making fun of himself not anyone else. He’s not always pc with his pc, but he was being self-deprecating.

USFS was clear this year. Like many other countries, they announced early that they will take into consideration the athletes previous record, as they should. You can’t come to Nationals, have a good day and claim a spot on the Olympic team, when other skaters are busting their assess to get USA on the skating map for years at the time. Let’s be honest.
PREACH!!! How is this so hard to understand? People saying Ross was robbed who wouldn’t even have placed him in the top 6 at Nats, come on
