2018-2019 GP Assignments

I think this means Evgenia will likely be at skate Canada International this gp season

Darn! Happy to hear of her plans for some new endeavors, but I'll miss her skating. I am hoping to attend Sk Can and was looking forward to (most likely) seeing her there. Boo hoo, but good luck!

I would bet on Carolina and Gabby being the two seeded skaters now.

Realistically I think Gabby has a better shot against her than Satoko or Wakaba.

Also... this will likely be Gabby first GP medal if she doesn’t blow it!

Osmond's withdrawal means the seeds now are:

1. Higuchi
2. Miyahara
3. Kostner

4. Zagitova
5. Tennell
6. Daleman

Who skates at Skate Canada depends on:
1. Host picks
2. Choices of the top seeds

Now that Osmond is not skating at SC, Higuchi or Miyahara could decide to skate there. Daleman being a host pick would not prevent that. Skate Canada could also invite Medvedeva, but if Higuchi or Miyahara is there already, I rather doubt they'd want another stiff competitor.

I was under the impression that only the reigning champ in a particular discipline had a say in where they went.

The top 3 seeds get to choose where they want to go. With Osmond out, then they go down the list (Higuchi now has first picks, then Miyahara then Kostner)

That’s incorrect, no one gets to choose, but it’s customary to accommodate the champion.

With Keatlyn out the hosts will decide which seeded skaters go where.

It’s not like Wakaba will get NHK over Satoko.

Host picks go before everything else.

Then the top two seeds' choices are accommodated taking into consideration the limitations imposed by the host picks.
This fact remains even if the World Champion has vacated the top seed spot.

Say NHK has chosen Miyahara as host pick.

Then Wakaba can choose from USA SC CoC CoR TDF She chooses SC and TDF
Satoko has NHK and can choose from USA CoC CoR She chooses CoC
Carolina gets USA and CoR

USA has host-picked Bradie Tennell, SC has host-picked Gabby Daleman, CoR has host-picked Alina Zagitova

TDF, NHK and CoC draw lots to choose their 4-6 seed from Tennell, Daleman or Zagitova

I think even the top skaters only get 2 GP's and the GPF, if they make it. There are senior B's like Lomdardia, Golden Spin, and a couple of others. Bradie's only GP last year was Skate America, right?

Bradie did the Lombardia Challenge, where she finished 4th behind Zagitova, Higuchi and Kostner, scoring 196.70 (132.36 in the FS)---pretty impressive in itself. She next won bronze at SA, scoring 204.10, and 137.09 in the FS.

A little off-course here, but several posters have referenced SC and SA as being an ok option for a back-to-back assignment as they have the least distance/travel time between them. This didn’t sound quite right to me, so I did a little research!

Distances as the crow flies between all Grand Prix stops are as follows, starting with the closest:

1084 kms - Shanghai to Hiroshima
2520 kms - Grenoble to Moscow
3649 kms - Everett to Laval
5945 kms - Laval to Grenoble
6833 kms - Moscow to Shanghai
7071 kms - Laval to Moscow
7208 kms - Moscow to Hiroshima
8263 kms - Hiroshima to Everett
8354 kms - Everett to Moscow
8507 kms - Grenoble to Everett
9188 kms - Everett to Shanghai
9353 kms - Shanghai to Grenoble
9693 kms - Grenoble to Hiroshima
10761 kms - Hiroshima to Laval
11356 kms - Laval to Shanghai

So as you can see, although Everett to Laval is one of the shortest overall, it’s actually the farthest of the three “regional pairings.” CoC-NHK and Rostelecom-IDF would actually be an easier trip to make. And the time zones only differ by an hour in those two pairings, when it’s three between Everett and Laval.

I recognize that this is direct distance and not flying time, but I checked and all but one of the trips is accessible in 2 flights or less (assuming flying out of the nearest major international airport) The one exception is Grenoble to Hiroshima, which requires at least 3 legs to get between the two.

Also, please note that I used Shanghai for the Cup of China, because that’s where the most persistent rumours have it at this season, but it’s not a confirmed thing.

Consider me a career lurker on this site, but for some reason this was the thing that pulled me out of my shell. 🤪. Geography nerd, I guess.

Thanks! This makes sense. So each event can have 1 host pick? Is this different than the TBD spot that each fed can fill?

Each event has 3 host spots - the TBD are host spots that the host decided to keep open before they finally determined whom to give them to.

And a host may country may have more than one of their three host spots labeled as TBD, "To Be Determined," if they want. Usually, only one host spot will be listed this way, but now and then you see two. Also, if a country does not have enough athletes in a particular discipline to fill all three host spots, you sometimes only see a couple listed because the host country chooses to throw the extra spots back into the pool for the selection of athletes from other countries.

Zagitova about the GP assignments

Alina herself at the moment does not know where she will go, but said that she would like to visit the Russian and Japanese stages, although she probably will not be in Russia.

And then they only need to ensure one more extra invite for Evgenia whereas Alina is guaranteed hers
