2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I’m really enjoying Evgenia’s new Instagram love for ladybugs. 🐞 Are there similar insects in Russia?.
Yeah, we call them божья коровка, which means "God's little cow". Don't ask me why...
The lady in the name ladybird refers to the Virgin Mary. ladybird/ladybug/lady beetle means the same: it is Our Lady, the God’s Mother. Its name is also linked with Virgin Mary in most Spanish-speaking countries.
In other countries, ladybugs are associated directly with God.
It can also be called ‘God’s chicken’, ‘Good God’s animal’ or ‘little animal of our Good Lord’.

Or Little Joana (joaninha) in Brazilian Portuguese :slink:

We call them ‘Marienkäfer‘ in German. I never thought about that to be honest but I guess it‘s also in relation to Virgin Mary. Figure skating always makes me learn something new. Whether it‘s about bagged milk or ladybugs.

(BTW even if she would won at worlds, she would be still second, probably).

This is correct and Olympic Gold or WC count for the same bracket. If you win Olympic Games you can not improve your season World Standing at WC. Those junior season points are lower than the GP points and on top of that Alina could not have competed in the “select” senior international events like a challenger for points. She’s scored as many points as she could last year and was limited in the prior season.

It’s all kind of ignorable IMO

In Peru, we call them 'Mariquita'

The word малявка is rather neglecting than insulting. I don't think anyone would say "whippersnapper" without an intention to insult someone.

Whippersnapper can be affectionate. My dad still calls my 34 year old brother "Whippersnapper" as a term of endearment.

Funny story, at 2006 US Nationals, I complimented Dick Button's tie and over the course of our brief conversation he called me whippersnapper and I will never, ever forget it.

I doubt they will call anything 180 degrees prerotation or less. This issue isn't as big in men's, but all the top ladies' sheets would be littered with calls. I can't think of many ladies who prerotate their triples less than 180. Last season, Alina, Evgenia, Kaetlyn, Sotskova, and Satoko swept most major medals and all of them PR half a turn before leaving the ice. Same with Trusova and Kostornaia. If they do decide to reduce allowed PR to something like 90 degrees, I think we'd see a complete change in the hierarchy. I can't name many ladies who don't PR a ton - maybe Liza T. and Tsurskaya? Karen Chen? and Kostner. That's about all I can think of. So if most ladies get away with pre-rotating their triples, I think Trusova's half turn pre-rotated quads are fine.

Evgenias´s flip and lutz e looks for me 90-120 degrees prerotation.
Example flip: https://78.media.tumblr.com/426f8d0d80839a51c941628bfd84d7ad/tumblr_inline_p6o8ukP07P1slyotu_540.gif

What worries me is going to be the potentially significant prerotation on quads, which has much greater scoring potential than triples, that may not be properly penalized (but should be assessed in the revised good take-off and landing bullet). For example, some of the men got similar points last season for quads with different amounts of prerotation.

Considering the amount of prerotation allowed on triples I should hardly think one person doing quads of similar prerotation should be much of an issue to worry over. :handw:

As long as it’s not both pre-rotated and under-rotated I really don’t care. Sasha’s quads are great. Not plus five or anything yet on my scorecard but I’m fine with seeing positive GOE. Heck even up to +4 regardless of rather I’d score it that high or not.

I think it should be addressed in triples before quads — so many ladies do triples. Only two currently do quads.

We'll see, if they go after prerotation in GOE, max would be +3. For triples, that would be capping on average of about 1 point less of max value and about 2 points less of max value on quads.

No need for me to fuss much over that stuff. I get to just enjoy the show :)

They won't. Turning forward on lutz and flip is valid technique. Not ideal, but valid. Literally it's taught like that to some people, as far as I'm aware. It's not "weak" take-off. Turning beyond that ought to simply be used to detect URs.

I don't think the quads done with this technique should be worth anything, as it produces tiny quads and makes them look extremely unimpressive, and it looks like they were taught literally to garner points and nothing more, but meh.

I don't know about you but for me and many others (as proven by number of views here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAnojfFenkM - more than 200k already after just couple of days) Trusova's pr quads looks extremely impressive ;P Hell, she contributes to advertisement of FS in a world on the level of all other skaters combined single handedly

IMHO Kostner’s triple lutz is very impressive with excellent technique, lack of pr, high, and beautiful. Her kind of technique should be encouraged.

I really do hope she shatters the glass right at the judges table all like...”this is what I think of your rules and THIS is what girls can do”

This program gets better each and every time I watch it :dance3:

Since this is russian ladies, why not Liza Tuktik, who has imho better lutz than Kostner (and a higher success rate on it).
