Alina Zagitova

Is this a new thing or they do they do it every year? What the hell could the Olympic champion ever gain from that especially with the new program she's not ready to display yet? If you want to do the open skate for the test skates for the up-and-comers or the skaters ranked 10 to 20 in their discipline but I see no reason for skaters the caliber of Zagitova and Mevedeva to be there when their programs aren't ready yet for the new season.

The Russian Federation should have done with Zagitova what they did with Sotnikova in 2014 and that would keep her from going to Worlds because she was so worn out after an emotional Olympic Games. The same thing should have happened to Alina this year but in this interview she said she wanted to go to the World Championships partly to keep the three spots for Russia. I found that very unselfish of her.

Thank you so much dante, we are very lucky to have you here! We really appreciate your hard work to translate all these interviews, and it means a lot for us! :thank:

About Alinka, what can I say? I always become emotional when I see her talking, she's a person I am looking forward to, which always remembers me to be humble and kind even when you pass through difficult times (and our poor Alinka surely did :sad21:). The way she was able to contain her happiness as a sign of respect for her friend, Zhenya, all the talk about her friendship with animals, the entire way she sees life is so mature and deep, so beyond her age. I don't know how anyone can say a single bad word about this angel. :sad21:

And the end was epic...being asked what she wishes for the next season, she could have answered anything from gold medals, to fame and recognition. But no, instead she answered "calmness". Just how deep and meaningful is that answer? She knows that having inner peace is the basement for everything that she'll want to achieve during the next competitions. I really hope she will be as tough as we know her and never lose her confidence because then, well..she can conquer the world. :luv17:

Can't thank you enough for this, I'm guessing the interviewer is Tatjana Flade (if it is, I'm super happy because she is a great person).

Alina is as kind as she is beautiful, and she said a lot of things that enlightened us as to her state of mind. She is a fierce competitor but that side of her never erases her kindness and her ability to have empathy with others. I think it was her sensitivity on that second part (picking up on others feelings) that got to her during the second part of test skates. That tense atmosphere shifted her mood and she tensed up, coupled with that insanely hard FS, and this made her perform the way we saw.

Different issue from Worlds but with same results. The weight of expectations is not the combustible that leads to a great performance for Alina. But that's the thing with being so young, she'll eventually learn how to cope with this, through the sheer force of repetition if nothing else, like she learned how to backload all her jumps. Last year in her first senior debut season she was the "suprise" element, as she got results her reputation (and others expectations) started to build. She got to the Olympics with a "she has potential to win this but she might not win it" vibe, I remember Tara saying something like "she is the only one that is as good" (meaning Zhenya), and I don't think the pressure was really on in a way that she could feel it.

But she can certainly feel it now, she has to find a way to deal with this, get herself on the same zone she gets for Ice Shows. She is always so happy in those, Alina is such a great performer, thrives in the spotlight, it is clear that she wants to put on a great show for the people but that, for her, doesn't equal to feeling pressured. She should work towards having that feeling at every performance, competition or otherwise. With time I think she'll get there, you can't be tense about the same thing over and over, her skin will get a bit thicker on this.

One big fact remains: she is a great talent and an awesome performer, she loves it, people love her for it and those two facts alone will make for a great career (in and out of competition). During the jump competition with Kaori on "The Ice" when she threw herself on the ice near the end in a "fall", you could tell she was having a great time. Also when Nobunari Oda was about to announce the winner and she closed her eyes waiting for it, that was a little priceless moment, she cares, and it shows, and that's what makes her such a great talent. The fact that she cares about how others feel, like she did about Kaori right then, is what makes her such a great person.

I remember perfectly
- that Alina was asked soon after the Olympics about her lack of joy after winning the Gold and she answereed that this is her way to be, more restrained.
and
- that Alina was asked about the participation at Worlds at that time (given the circumstances, flu, busy season) and she said that indeed she and her team didn't take into consideration to not participate because it's her first World Champ.
It's good that now, after some months, her answers are different, more public pleasing I would say :)).

Eteri —
I think that we should support Alina, she is 16 years old, she has a gold Olympic medal, she has a difficult time, she grows up and the whole world looks at her and asks— well, young lady, can you do something else?

Just to be precise the part that she talks about Alina is not in that video that has been translated. The main part of what she said about Alina is:

I think that now we should support her. A 16 years old girl, a kid with an Olympic medal with the fact that she understands that the entire world is looking at her and waits. “common girl what will you do (show us) now?” And also the fact that she got/picked something, for someone. She won it.

P.S. The translation is mine and may be inaccurate.

Well, Alina makes an honest and very nice interview, but it still somehow changes some threads into a warzone

I'm seriously so done with the way the media is using this situation... Alina said something really sweet and considerate - that she was thinking of her training mate's feelings, but this segment basically twists it into Alina accusing Zhenya of spoiling her fun, which was obviously not Alina's intention. This whole drama is so frustrating. (well, they also imply that the base value of quads was lowered because Sasha has mastered them, which is also completely absurd... talk about backloading, if you want to mention a rule change that really happened mainly because of Team Eteri's accomplishments)
