2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

Wow! I like her! She looks very promising. I guess USFS had to make their decision for Skate America before Nebelhorn? She's a very strong skater, could tighten her leg position in her jumps, but at least in this video she jumps big and just flies across the ice (I could be so impressed about her speed because I had just watched Tuk's LP from today...)

She's on the alternate list for the JGP, so she can't. The decision for SA is in the first week of August. Challenger series never come into play when deciding. Skaters must perform well the year prior at nationals or summer club comps to get the spot.

Ashley is quite impressive and thejudges do not seem to really like Liza T - I am notsaying I would but if they wanted too her pcs could rise considerably. As for the next Bradie or Mariah I am not sure you want to be a Mariah. She has looked very inconsistent. Once shelooked good and then she fell back to earth literally and figuratively. But for the American ladies not owning it she easily could be a forgotten American skater but because the ladies have not been consistent even Ashley Gracie Mirai karen et al Mariah kind of is still in the mix and after the olympics som many skaters dropped out she got to go toworlds. Bradie is the American hope. THere are a lot of Gracie fans here andwe arehoepful for her but we haven'tt really seen anything as of yet. My concern about Gracie is that she has a very erratic life. Competing, to like a swimmer drowing flinging herself atcompetitions and exhibitions orshowskating, to time off to I am a coach to I am ready to compete. Fickle? Whatever but I am concerned she needs stabiliity and jumping allo ver the place while not impossible that she will thrive couldbe a recipe for disaster.I still senseshe is the drowing swimmer flailing all over the place a bit. Like an injured animal orpersontrying to come backtoo soon maybe. My coach would say make a decision and stick with it; but she seems to nt wait too l ong before it is time to try something different or go back to the same. Like gravity there is usually a reaction ; wewill see. We alllove Gracie and know her potential. The time is perfect with no realdominate lady after Bradie but Idoworry about Gracie. Her life in the last two years including skating has been all over the place and I think some stabiliity some routine might be good. But like that song Never Enough - she wantsi it all = but so does everyone else.

Can I ask how old most of these ladies are? To me, it's a different dynamic for an 18 year old to have a clean triple lutz than an 11 year old, and the latter is much more impressive, in my opinion.

I’m not sure about the others but the winners were all relatively young- Alena Budko was 2nd with a clean triple lutz and she is 11 or 12.

At least Pooja got a new LP, even if she didn’t skate clean. The URs seem to be a problem? But the tech controller seemed to be very strict overall - and honestly I trust Alex O. to make sure there are no chronic UR issues.

I was hoping for better from Bradie at JO. At the very least she didn’t really fake being happy after her skate and score. She’s hungry and has high expectations for herself, and that’s not a bad thing in her position.

Something that I hoped the bonus system would fix. I am so tired of seeing girls with basic programs that get way overscored because the look mature and elegant. All it does is stagnant the skaters they reward who need to take it up a notch and mislead the skaters they penalize into focusing more on presentation when they need to focus on jumps.

This and crummy tech controllers are really holding us back.

With the old IJS system + the bonus system, I think there was a balance.

With the new system, the real risk is now greater than the reward. USFS needs to double the bonuses to compensate for the real risk (-5 GOE).

If we can use 6.0 from Pre-preliminary to Pre-juvenile, we can use the pre-2018 system for Novice and below.

Poo has impressed me. She has some spunk and flair. Some good training and who knows. Everyone's programs not just in the US seem to be in progress. No one's programs have wowed me. I admit tech wise Bradie is especially with the 3lutz 3loop combo. I am curious to see what Karen brings and just how strong Gracie returns.

For me Bradie is the only hope, and I am glad we have her. Has Karen and Gracie skated publicly recently? The lack of videos indicates their conditions.

If you watched the interview that just came out from Gracie, she’s definitely going about this the right way. She’s been very hush hush throughout, but I know however she does, she’s in a good head space to get there.

Karen only got back on the ice from her injury a few days ago. She was in a walking boot until then, give her a chance.

I am not saying Karen or Gracie are not capable of doing well, but based on their lack of showing so far, they are not going to make an impact soon, probably not close to the end of the season.

I really enjoyed listening to Gracie's interview. She seemed to really know herself and has realistic expectations- as in knowing she would regret not trying to comeback and even if she can't be at the level she was before she will be able to say she tried and retire on her own terms. I also appreciate how frank she was about her mental health struggles and how it took her getting to a pretty dark place before she was able to get help, she is clearly a very strong person. It was also interesting to hear her talk about having to go through all this in a very transparent sport- her struggles that season are a lot clearer after hearing this interview. No matter what happens I hope she is able to really enjoy her comeback and skate for herself.

I'm so excited to see her skate again, and it seems that she has found a way to focus on the positive and love skating again. Regardless of the outcome, I just want to see her go out and love skating. Those who have seen said her jumps still have great height, and that was several months ago, so I'm hopeful that we will get to see something special from her this year.

I don't think we can predict exactly how Gracie or Karen will skate this year. Just as I don't think that Nathan's rough skate at the Japan Open is necessarily indicative of his abilities as a skater or how this season will go. Just as Alina's rough skate at Worlds said anything about her abilities or even a roughish skate at the russian test skates meant that she wouldn't skate well this season. I'd say just sit back and watch and let the skaters rise to the occasion.

The majority of novice ladies are going into their sophomore year of high school (15 years old). Most ladies stay in novice 2 years. 2nd year novice ladies tend to be beautiful skaters!

The young skaters may have the jumps but do not have the skating skills relative to the "older" ladies. A couple of errors by any skater trying the more difficults trick will push down that lady's score.

Our current system still rewards a cleam skater with lovely skating skills but less difficult jumps.

I disagree with some of this. Alena (the 2nd place skater at NWP) is a beautiful skater.

are there any videos of Mariah and Bradie from this last weekend? Can't seem to find any...

I was wondering what they are going to do about their GP in Russia? Because I suspect neither will be able to compete, and in that case, who goes?

I think Gracie will compete. If she doesn’t, she can’t get a GP next year so I think she will try it...

I agree that I think Gracie will be there. She's planning on aiming for Beijing, and if she WDs from CoR, that makes it way harder for her to get a GP event in the future.

Even if Gracie isn't back to her best form yet, she seems mentally prepared to make mistakes and cope with that - it's part of the journey.

Karen I am less sure about, since she's dealing with coming back from injury.
