Ladies - Short Program

Wow, this looks like a crazy one. So much for the domination of Asada. That's one heck of a deficit to make up if she is to make a run for gold. I think 10 points is too much. Very disappointed for Rochette. I was really hoping she'd at least be midway in the top 10 after the short. But hopefully this means she can come out in the long with no pressure and just skate like I haven't seen her all season except in the exhibitions. It will be tough marks-wise for her to even hit the top 10, but I'm hoping. Meissner is still one to watch, lurking there in fourth place....she's made some impressive comebacks this season already. Ando with her shoulder problems is still a question mark to me for the LP. Great to see Kostner finally perhaps living up to her potential somewhat.

Yu Na Kim best in the long has been 119.32
Mao Asada best in the long has been 130.02

Mao is definitely still in the run for gold.

Yeah, but Yu-na's PCS took a huge jump in this short program, and she skates before Mao...

Thank you Rosaleen for these reports. I'm sorry to hear about your disaster. I can empathize with the frustration of having to re-do articles...

I'm so happy for Yu-na Kim, but must admit a bit of shock at Mao's short program placement. I'm ecstatic about Kostner's performance and am really looking forward to her long program. These reports are great. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but they're currently the only access I have to what's going on in this tournament. That said, I can't wait to watch the performances.

Look out for Mao. If she made one mistake, she is likely to make another one and then another one.

Yeah, Yu-Na. I've set my eyes on her since I watched her Junior world competetion 2 or 3 years ago. Even she losted to the Mao. But she is IT.

I would still not count Mao out for gold. Who knows, that lackluster (what it appears to be) short could fire her up for the freeskate. I still think she is a force to be reckoned with. Any of the top five can make a run for it. If nothing she's at least gonna be on that podium somewhere...

and Yu-na, wow. Not sure what to expect from her in the long but she has the advantage.

I told people to look out for Kostner, she was hardly mentioned before...and now look where she is. told ya so ;) but there's still 66% of the comp left to go.

Meissner- sounds like she did ok but still has catching up to do. I did not expect her to get 60+ though, wow..and Hughes getting 60??? what's up with that

yu na kim was simply amazing. i couldnt take my eyes off her!! - i even got goosebumps! her expressions were incredible, i could rly see that she was feeling the music. i have to agree with one of the posts from above - it is true that she doesnt have any triple axel/ quads...... but so what? she still has a variety of lovely jumps, and fantastic expressions which can cover those parts. i loved her tonight....... and yes! I am yu na's fan!

speaking of the japanese skaters. i feel sorry for mao asada. i know that she can do better, but maybe there was too much pressure on her. i hope she learns how to overcome those fears. and miki ando was also amazing tonight - very powerful!

What a nailbiter. I haven't seen anything yet but I hope little Mao can set aside her fears and do what she's capable of in the FP. Kimmie and Emily should be feeling their oats! Go, Miki, Mao, Yukari and Elene! Congrats, Yu Na and Carolina! It looks to be a great LP with a superb podium!

Mao will get it together, never fear... this year or next year - she has time.

Ouch Mao. OMG poor thing. I hope this gets her motivated to do better tomorrow and at least medal. But I can't say I'm not happy for Yu-Na because I am thrilled!!! Well done!!!! I haven't seen it yet and I can't wait. I have no idea if Eurosport is going to show it again today. I expect to download it somewhere.

But the thrill of the day is CAROLINA!!!! I can't believe she made it to the medal position. And I really really hope she stays there and wins bronze at least. Silver is not that fair away.

(It just occurred to me that Joesitz must be feeling quite self-satisfied right now. He favored Yu Na. I think he's in Tokyo. Hi, Joe!)

SS, I hope Joe is behaving himself!!

He usually gives us names to watch. He told us about Davydov, Rohene Ward and Yu Na. Somebody else but I can't think of who right now.

He was the first at GS (that I know of) to rave about Zhang and Flatt!

Well, good for you guys that you had faith in Yu Na. I've been put off by her sad face and horrible back problems but apparently she's skating happily and pain-free. It will be a sight to see! I'm tuning in tonight.

Yu na smiled quite a bit throughout her performance. Her coach said that losing the braces helped her out in that regard.

oh, it's tonight? good lord I don't even know when this would be televised.

It's not over yet though. She still has to get through the free.

What happened to Joannie and Mira? Why so low down in the standings? I'm shocked for both of them!

Rochette got a terrible draw for the LP if she wants to move up. We all know that in spite of the new system the judges have short memories.
