2019-20 Russian Ladies' Figure Skating

Does anyone else really like Daria?

My unpopular opinion... I prefer her skating to kamila’s, I think she’s a stunning performer. I also prefer her sp to kamila’s, I think it is elegant and has a great flow and I love the song. And nothing against Kamila, but am I the only one who thinks that her sp has too many leg lifts/kicks/extensions? Like I know she’s got great flexibility, however I think it’s over used in that program of which everyone seems to praise. Obviously the choreo is not Kamila’s fault and she is still an exquisite skater, but I find her short to be slightly over-hyped.

totally agree with u. I mean I like Kamilla but her jumps specially 3-3 is way too wierd. But thing
is Daria has to improve her consistency in my opinion, I watched over her since last season
and she makes mistakes too often, thr first half of her season she had problems with
consitency of her jumps and next half season, she improved her jump consistency but then
started to fall when she’s doing her stsq or more minor elements.
Beside that I like her movements jumps spins.
I think Maya(?) she’s the best jumper of all 4 of eteri’s junior skaters.

I get what you are saying. And I do love Daria as well. However, to me it seems that Daria is a bit weaker technically. But she is indead a stunning performer.

I love Daria's movement quality and musical timing, and her SP is quite illustrative of that (today she was a little off-timing at the end because she stumbled on one of her steps, but when she's clean her performance is just wonderful). I originally started writing a very long post about Kamila, Daria and Maya's musicality, and how they match up to the 3A (as a part 2 to my other post about the 3A's musicality), but I never posted it. I originally wrote this about Daria because she seriously impressed me. (Beware...very, very long post ahead.)

Aside from inconsistency, Daria's biggest artistic issue is her face. It is blank. She is a gorgeous skater, but she does not skate with her face at all. It often looks odd because her body shows so much passion and her face is just...mismatched. Blank. To dramatic, swelling, cinematic music.

But in terms of range of movement to the music, Daria really, really impresses me. She is twelve. Please Don't Make Me Love You is NOT an easy piece to skate to for a twelve-year-old, because if you pay attention to the song, the mood changes so often. It's not like (for example) Kamila's SP where the mood goes from soft/slow/graceful in the first half to intense/forceful/powerful in the second. Instead, it is constantly moving from one to another and back. The singer's voice goes from loud to soft to loud again, the crescendo comes in and then goes just as quickly and then suddenly it's back again. It requires a twelve-year-old to understand musical phrasing on a relatively intricate level, and Daria does it beautifully. I honestly think that nearly any other girl her age would look like they are skating through that music, but Daria makes it special. And this is coming from someone who does not follow her closely, would not consider herself a Daria fan, etc - I honestly think she has a musical gift. If only she could get more consistency!

If you watch one of those rare occasions where Daria skates her SP clean, you will see that she knows how to be soft and graceful to the soft and graceful parts of the music, and how to be sharp and harsh and quick with the loud, crescendo parts of the music. Which is very impressive considering her music keeps going from one to the other and back again, over and over. It means that this kid genuinely understands music. It's not a front half/back half type affair, which is not easy either but is certainly easier than the constantly changing vibe of Please Don't Make Me Love You.

And as for Kamila, I love, love, love her extensions. I think she is very fluid in her movement, I love the control and flexibility she has in her body at such a young age. I think she is a prodigy and I would absolutely die for her lines. But I think that in terms of actually understanding her music and how it correlates to body movement, she isn't quite on Daria's level (yet), and this is the most apparent at the beginning of her SP, when the music is extremely slow and soft and minimal, yet she is hitting every single movement very sharply, similarly to how she moves in the second half of her program when her music becomes intense. It's not only a matter of how many movements she has to hit in the choreography, it's also about how sharp and powerful she hits each movement - it doesn't correlate to the beginning music at all. Compare her to (clean) Daria, where she will vary her movements between soft, graceful music and intense, powerful music. But when Kamila is older I am sure she will understand the music better, because she is still so young and she has plenty of time. Both Daria and Kamila are beautiful skaters and have so much potential.

New interview of Alyona Kanysheva:
she changed the attitude to her skating, she says psychologically it's easier for her to skate now
decided not to include 4T in the coming season, the strategy is to go clean with triples
she's a straight A student, her parents told her if her marks will go down, there would be no figure skating

Interview of Kamila:
plans to include 4T, is also learning 4s and 3a
she's fully recovered after her injury last season
Didn't expect Shoma's so short

Only in TV close ups you can actually see the skaters’ facial expression.

I doubt the judges even have a chance to observe a skater’s face in real time even when she is close to their desk.

So I don’t think it should really deduct from the artistry score, carriage and articulation are much more visible and important.

Having an expressive face in connection to the music probably comes with experience, age and maturity unless you’re one of the rare prodigies.
“Learned” facial expressions usually fall through very quickly, always that same 'plastic' smile plastered to your face.

Kanyshek the Perfectionist. Cool kid she is for sure. And I like the way she did her hair for this special occasion, her first showing as a Khrustalniy skater if I am correct?

The move to Khrustalniy has been good for her.

I only wish Tarakanova would’ve never left Khrustalniy. If she’d have an uninterrupted development in technique and artistry, she’d be at a whole different level now given her athletic prowess.
Has Anastasiya ever showed any regrets about leaving? My guess is she is too proud to admit it

I really like this! I think it sums up basically what I think too, I am very impressed by Daria’s musicality and I feel that she shines in this aspect. Technically she is not as strong as her competitors as a few posters mentioned, i’m Really hoping this is a year for improvement for her. She needs the consistency of her teammates and a lutz in the short would be preferred, if she can get these things, then I’m hoping she will be a very strong competitor. I’m excited for her JGP debut and wish her the best of luck there!

Lol. What does Alysa have to do with anything of this? Remember the talk a couple of days ago in here, everyone agreed that the Russian ladies (talk was about Tarakanova and Sinitsyna because it will be the “clash“ of them with Alysa soon, not Kamila) are way above Alysa in many aspects. Alysa is a lovely and charming performer and might beat some of the less expressive Russian ladies there and she has the technical elements. But other than that, she underrotates frequently, is slow and doesn‘t have a whole lot of experience yet. Kamila‘s speed, extensions, lines, even GOE on jumps because she doesn‘t UR and they look more effortless should beat Alysa easily. People were just confused because she performed differently today than she did last year and not in a good way - a bit hectic. This doesn’t take anything away from her being probably the biggest star in the making in the junior ladies field, though.

It's better for her to leave if the alternative was to stay in the place which made her unhappy or created unhealthy environment for her.
But I'm afraid she might become wasted talent. That girl has great skating skills, proper jumping technique and good flexibility. Nastia always reminded me of young Sotnikova and I'd cry if she just disappeared like Adelina

I think you’re reading into this wrong. I didn’t write this to put any objections on Kamila, it was more about liking Daria. To me it seems that the majority of posters here are most looking forward to kamila’s junior debut and she is their favorite junior this season. I was just saying that Daria’s skating and short appeal to me more than Kamila’s, not putting Kamila down or anything... I still adore her skating, Daria’s is just more my taste!

I think she was just nervous today.
In her interview she said she's nervous before competitions and actively tries to work on being less nervous.
After all, it is an important competition for new juniors, girls field is stacked, they have juniors who did pretty well before, so I guess she just got a little bit shaken up.

We probably have to wait till the JGP final to see how that would pan out. Hopefully the more chauvinist Russian media will appreciate Liu for the worthy competitor she is. If TAT starts denigrating a 13 year old child from another federation for having the guts to oppose the entitled favourites ...

Anastasia Tarakanova: House Of The Rising Sun By Heavy Young Heathens (The Magnificent Seven Trailer Music)

Thanks! I didn't know the second piece of music, I just copied Man with Harmonica from the info that popped up before she skated. (Clearly I am ready to be this season's "She is skating to Believer, by Imagine Dragons.")

That‘s understandable of course. I sometimes forget these girls are only 13, 14. They all seem like such tough and seasoned competitors...

Till now she is taken as the most serious opponent to the russian girls, deservedly or not, and Kamila is taken (or was) as the best of the upcoming russian juniors. Therefore there were talks about their competition in JGPF, that's the "clash", not Lake Placid. Those objections appeared quite suddenly, through the last season Kamila was the one pre-junior with hundreds of thousands of views of her skating (who in her age can talk about it) and hardly anyone had an objection about it (apart from "losing her lutz", which was disproved easily). Now it is about "being hectic", "not my taste" and all, while there was only a handful people talking about Daria at all (mostly about her inconsistency) and suddely she one. I'm still not used to those changes of moods of the crowd.

Yes, Aliona, Nastya and Ksusha have their experience already, they have one or even two junior seasons behind, Kamila and others haven't through this yet. If people remember last year's test skates, 3A were seasoned wonders of nature already.

Still, everybody look how far we got, four or five years ago only the officials and skaters cared about russian test skates (at least on junior level), now it becomes one of the main events on the beginning of the season.

I wrote in this thread (or the 18-19 season thread) a few months ago that I really preferred all of Daria's elements to Kamila's, besides perhaps Kamila's flexibility (but Daria has great flexibility too!) To my eye, she just has more flow and ease across the eyes, has elegant and tasteful positions, and her jumps have much greater ease than Kamila's who looks to have some weird quirks in a few of her entries and air positions. I agree with you about that short program, too. Not only her SP, but her FS to a lesser extent just feels like *step, step, kick, step, step, kick* and I feel like Daria had more dynamic choreography and interesting positions. Though, with Kamila's outstanding flexibility and ability to pull off such programs that show off her great extension and interesting positions, I completely understand why her programs appealed to people. Not to mention that she essentially gained the hype on her own merits because she was able to consistently put out good programs and do exceptionally well as a pre-junior skater, while Daria didn't have the same consistency and didn't get her name out there in the same way. I suspect that if Daria is able to do well this season, more people will begin notice her and she'll get the hype she deserves as well. She's definitely the Russian junior I'm most looking forward to and I hope she can gain consistency, and I hope I like her programs this season too.

"Harmonica piece" is like 5 second in the beginning and the rest is HoTRS.
