2021-2022 U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Keegan Messing is such a class act. He said this in the comments section of the IG Account "Deeper Edges" about his and Jason's standing after the SP in Finlandia:

I personally feel that with the new system that tie breakers should be done away with. We tied to the hundredth of a point we should both have a number 1 by our names. Why tie break such a rare occurrence.

❤️
He is amazing. Gold medal for class. 🏅

I’ve never been able to, and probably never will, understand this type of attitude. The man is what, 20? and hasn’t even won a senior US championship title. I think Nathan’s said he will at least take time off if not outright retire after the Olympics and Vincent would then be poised to not just win medals but gold medals. I mean if not I’m sure someone else will be glad to..but Vincent is doing something only a tiny tiny handful of people in the world will ever be able to do. Believe me my dude, the workforce isn’t that exciting.

Vincent isn’t a super favorite of mine and I support his decision to do whatever he wants. I just don’t get it. It’s like …say H/D and C/B retiring and H/B retiring just when they could finally get out of their perennial 3rd place spot. I just don’t grok it.
I think this is very harsh. Zhou's made no secret of his own academic ambitions, and it's not up to us to criticise when he chooses to pursue them. He's also going to what I understand is a very prestigious school. I think good on him for knowing that skating is not forever. He has a laundry list of injuries and I would hate to see him miss out on establishing the academic career he wants to continue to skate because a few people think he should.

It does leave the US men in a very difficult position if both Nathan and Vincent choose to pursue their academics after Beijing. Jason might be getting more beautiful with every season but he's also not getting any younger. I would still say that the US haven't replaced that warm-up group of World-quality men they lost between 2014-2018, but particularly that depth.

How is it harsh? Seriously just because I don’t understand it doesn’t mean I think it’s the wrong thing for a person to do. I literally do not understand it and am trying to figure it out. Not even just for Vincent in particular.

To me a “typical college experience” is eating too much unhealthy food and putting on the freshman 15, drinking too much, maybe dabbling in a few substances that might not fly on a WADA test. When I went to college back when dinosaurs roamed the earth some women were still attending college to get their Mrs. Hopefully that no longer happens. I just can’t imagine any of this would apply to an elite athlete, so I am trying to figure out what exactly it is they are searching for.

It’s his body and his time and if he wants to quit tomorrow he should do that. It’s no skin off my nose. I never said I thought he should keep skating. He should do what he wants to do.

As for the loss of the men, who knows. Maybe some juniors will step up to fill those shoes. We certainly have some promising ones. I’m also aware some skaters successfully navigate the transition from Junior to Senior and some don’t. It will be interesting to see.

He still has to get minimums at a Senior competition yet.
I’m sure US will send Ilia somewhere and that he’ll easily get the required tech. He might not get an olympic spot, but US needs good substitutes. Anything can happen to the three frontrunners.

In Linz Ilia got 45+ for technical elements. Probably the highest for a junior this season? Without a quad which juniors aren’t allowed to do in the short. The performance looked very good in other aspects as well. Smooth and polished.

Way to go Ilia and good luck today (y)

Yeah i agree while the top men is as good as it's ever been for US men skaters like Camden, Andrew haven't gone to to the next level and in some ways have regressed and someone like Tomoki is wildly inconsistent and Alex has retired. The nest generation hasn't progressed the way they needed to so someone like Ilia could make a move up the rankings of US men fast.

I was just last night wondering about Tomoki and realizing I hadn’t heard anything about him this year. Has he competed? And *cough* Jimmy Ma *cough*

What?? I guess Keegan and Mikhail must have had a rough day. I'm happy for Jason but, I'm surprised that a Quadless Jason would win this event. There's something to be said about skating clean and having amazing presentation skills.

Jason had a fall on a triple axel, and not the hardest jumping content. I think it will grow and get better as the season goes on.
This was a strange event. Jason didn't win either segment here. I guess the chips just fell in all the right places. Congratulations Jason. However, I am worried about Camden. I really thought he was going to be the next big thing, He seems to be struggling lately. I hope he can turn things around.

The fact he did it with less than full tech content - a 2A and only one 3Z - is kind of amazing. I’m really happy he was able to do as well as he did but I do wonder what’s going on.
It's early October is what's going on. :rolleye:

Jason's just given you irrefutable proof that Lease was talking out his backside and you still want to somehow defend what Lease said as the absolute truth?

Karne this has nothing to do with Dave Lease, and if you notice, all I said was I wonder what’s going on. I watched Jason struggle landing his 3As yesterday, today in warmup, and today in the the FS. I can’t recall the last time he didn’t do two 3Zs in a program. Nor can I recall the last time he did a 2A. The only time he ever does a 3F-2T is when he either pops the 3T or has another -3T combo planned. If you think that’s his normal October content you’re entitled to your opinion but I disagree.

Jason got almost the exact same score and did almost the exact same content as at the last WC, except with a 2A at the end instead of a 4S at the beginning. He did two 2T and one 3Lz then too. Not sure if the layout change means he probably is or isnt planning to add the quad later on. Jason is fine either way - as long as he isn't in any kind of cast, he'll be on the Olympic team and not on the Olympic podium.

Not a cast, but his fingers were taped up. Hope they are ok. He could podium again with the team (assuming they get a team medal) but I expect Nathan will skate two legs.
