Will Yu Na be around for 2010?

With her injuries, I am starting to think she won't be skating competitively in 2010. Poor girl. She has all the talent in the World, but at what cost? I will be amazed if she is still a top contendor in 2010.

It seems entirely possible that Yu-na will not be able to continue that long. Some of her own comments have seemed like she was hinting to her fans to be prepared for whatever might happen.

With regard to the Olympics, both Kim and Asada had bad luck. They were too young for 2006, which might turn out to have been be the competitive peak for both of them.

Maybe Orser and Team should keep her out of most of the early non-essential competitions (like the Grand Prix and 4CCs) from now till the Olympics... and keep it simple in practice/training?

I dunno.... hopefully she can make it... (seems her health poops out after the Grand Prix... they should really look into that)

Yu-na had an injury all season long last year, so I wasn't surprised to hear that she's sick right now. Injuries on hip, waist, spine etc. are not that easily recovered because they are chronic. All you can do is pace yourself, be careful all the time, and take a rest when needed. I'm sure Yu-na will be okay. About Yu-na and Mao passing their prime in 2010, Arakawa was around mid-twenty and those two skaters will still be teenagers!

I really hope she'll be able to skate at the next olys. I definitly want to see her become olympic champ! She has so much potential!

This news is very grim to read. No one seems to know if she is under doctor's care and if so, what has he to say.

I agree about the bad news. I was under the impression that this was a new injury that could be healed in two weeks according to earlier reports. Now Orser has confirmed this is the same injury as last season. She had trouble last year at Worlds because of this injury will we see a repeat.

According to Yuna's management agency, it is possible that she may not even participate in the Worlds this year. After a week's rest, things haven't gotten any better, they said. She can't even jog due to pains at this point. I will be sad to watch the Worlds without her competing.

This situation is A LOT worse than I originally thought.....
This also goes to show the dangers of skating too much at a young age.

I hope that she recovers soon!

Oh, I so hate to hear news like this. I sincerely hope Yu-Na is able to rest and recover to be pain free. I would jump for joy if she could also continue training, but truly hope she can put her short and long term body 'needs' first.

That doesn't sound good... Hopefully she doesn't have to stop competitive skating even before her career really began! There's still so much potential! I keep my fingers crossed!

forget about mao, if this girl stayed injury-free she would be unbeatable. (she already is this season)! I do not know yu-na, so i cannot say exactly how injured she is and how soon she will recover. I think that it would in her best intrests if she took of the rest of this season, skipped the GP series in 2008 and if she is recovered by then, she should do world and maybe her nationals. Hopefully after this rest, and the rest during the summer and fall of 2009 (no GP for her then either) she should be OK for the Olympics. If winning the OG is her goal, then she has to reallly cut down and save herself for that. Also, Brian should prevent her from practicing the loop. She dosen't really need it. She should instead try a secong triple-triple and maybe even the 3 axel.

She cannot rest too much or she will not be in any competitive shape.
Also, if she only competes 2-3 times a year what will she do about her programs?? Still get new ones every year or what???
Maybe next year she should skip the GP but that is it. In the Olympic year, she will need to get her program "out there" and get reviews from the judges....................

I wonder if Yu-Na will have to start taking the "one-day-at-a time" approach that Michelle did when her injury really started to kick in...

I´m very sad for Yu-Na, but hope that she will have the patience to rest and stay off-ice a time long enough for her injuries to heal, if possible. A doctor plus her team can surely create for her a fitting off-ice training programme that will keep her in a kind of competitive shape?

That would be horrible if she becomes too injured to compete anymore. :frown: Her skating with everyone brings the competition to a higher level. Was it Kurt Browning who said, You're only as good as the people you beat. I wish her a speedy recovery and several more years of competition.

I may be an outlier here but I am always put aback by the idea the primary focus of a competitive skater should be to skate in an Olympics.

That is one of the concepts killing the popularity of figure skating. How long would golf and tennis survive if they only had one major or slam every four years? I understand Bob Costas' obsession since NBC pays so much for the Olympics but how they convinced USFSA and ISU to go along with that self-destructive myth is amazing. Anyone remember who won Olympic gold in tennis? Anyone care? Good!

Done ranting.

Back on topic -- Yu-Na should skate as long as she can and wants to without risking permanent injury. Saving herself for 2010 is no way to have a skating career. If she can't compete on a regular basis during the season then I would hope she would give up competitive skating altogether and get on with the rest of her life --- she has great star-power in Korea and could do wonders with their skating programs over there. She'll have no difficulty translating her star power into financial rewards if that is important to her.

Sure an athlete can avoid injuries by not competing or not playing the game. To plan an entire career around avoiding injury is absurd and really, it wouldn't work anyways. Without competing, no matter how clever her practices, no matter how great her talent, it just wont work. . . and for the health of figure skating in general and for the sake of the athletes who go out there and put their bodies and pride on the line 4 or 5 times a season I sincerely hope it doesn't work . . . and I am a long time fan of Yu-na and would like nothing better than for her to have a successful career -- which to me means far far more than 8 minutes in Vancouver.
